BigRedKitty: Hunter-loot awards for 2008 Part II
5. Rift Stalker Two-Piece Bonus. Doesn't matter which pieces of hunter Tier Five you had -- like the chest we're linking -- you never gave up two of them, or at least gritted your teeth when you put on your four-piece set bonus from Tier 6. The "15% of all damage-done is healing to your pet" bonus was so amazing, so glorious, so jaw-droppingly spectacular, that you swore you'd never give it up. We still carry the leggings and shoulder with us at all times. The fact that the bonus scales with the hunter means these pieces are still usable in WotLK. Throw on two pieces of Tier Five, grab a gorilla-pet, and AoE-tank and Volley stuff down till Arthas comes. The giggle-factor -- you just laugh when you see your pet getting healed from your inflicted damage -- and scalability of this set puts it on our list at number five.
4. Vengeful Gladiator's Waraxe. When this item was introduced, it became obvious that if one lost ten arena matches a week for a few weeks, one could replace just about every hunter-melee weapon in the game. One didn't set out to lose; that wouldn't have been proper. But even if you did, and you learned you loathed arenas, you got a massive reward for the time you invested. Not only did it had tremendous stats, but one didn't need to have an arena-rating to buy it! Even gear from Black Temple didn't have significantly better stats than this chunk of steel. It was wonderful for both PvE and PvP and it wouldn't get shoved off your toon, probably until Sunwell. The awesome power and silly ease-of-acquisition of the S3 axe puts it at number four.
3. Thori'dal, the Stars' Fury. A legendary ranged weapon, our dreams were answered. Even the Rhok'delar wasn't "Legendary". One had to put in one's raiding-time, running 25-mans all over Outland, and then finally defeat Kil'jaeden, but the promise of an orange bow was there. Of course, very few hunters ever achieved the goal of acquiring one, but for the sheer audacity of putting a legendary bow in the game, something so amazing that we'd threaten /gquit if it were given to a rogue, this weapon makes it into our top three.
2. Crossbow of Relentless Strikes. Run enough heroics and for 150 Badges of Justice, this... ugly piece of phooting-hell was yours. Every hunter who could run a heroic was capable of getting one, and we'd guess that the huge majority of hunters eventually did. But holy Elune was it grotesque. Just fugly in every sense of the non-existing word. Hideous. Yucky. But it packed a whallop. Does it compare in stats to Thori'dal? Of course not. But for it's popularity and power, which made every ranged weapon outside of Black Temple basically obsolete, and despite the vulgarity of the design, The Crossbow of Relentless Strikes surpasses the legendary bow and makes our number two spot.
1. Legacy. One word, that's all it took. It was huge, it had a history, and it was eye-candy. A hunter with Legacy was a raiding hunter, and all of Shattrath knew it. You might have Tier Four gloves and helm, but this is what everybody saw. This is the first melee-weapon most hunters desired above all else. This was why you went to Kara in the first place, right? And this is why you hated running with another hunter in your raid. For the mystique, the popularity, the power, the desire, and the fun that was involved with getting one...
Legacy is our Number-One Piece of Hunter Loot for 2008!

Legacy at #1? Seriously?
Race Bannon Dec 31st 2008 10:42AM
RNG is random. My guild's main tank , tanked everything in the game up through Brutallus with Gruul's shield. We farmed Illidan for months and month, no MH and no Bulwark. But in our first 3 KJ kills we got 2 Thori'dals

I sometimes ponder what the hell BRK was smoking when he writes posts such as this.
An axe worse than Sonic Spear at no. 1 while the best weapon in TBC (and apparently was in wotlk for a short while) is no. 3?
The 2nd best set bonus in existence at no. 5 while a BAD crossbow at no. 2?
Let's not forget the welfare axe of Huntards which is inferior to Halberd of Desolation and anyone (YES, ANYONE) with IQ > room. temp. could oneshot naj'entus ever since the great attunement removal of casual whine of 2008 and get that.
... Seriously, BRK, what the hell DID you smoke? I want some of that shit.
The Elitist Jerk Dec 31st 2008 9:48AM
I almost forgot.
Rhok'delar was the separator between huntards and hunters. Any idiot could farm Chromaggus until Asjre'thul dropped. It actually took skill and preparation to kill the 4 demons (in blues, when I did it) rather than /cast Auto Shot /afk /loot.
Now, here's a PROPER list of best hunter loot for 2008.
10. Sonic Spear.
9. Hourglass of the Unraveller
8. Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle
7. DST
6. Halberd of Desolation
5. Black Bow of the Betrayer
4. Dagger of Bad Mojo
3. 2pc t5 bonus
2. 4pc t6 bonus
1. Thori'dal
I'm listing mostly raid items because raiding is hard, there was fire, you had to move out of the fire.

L2Reading Comprehend.
BRK state this at the beginning
"What defines Significance? For our purpose, we're going to define it as: How much the gear affected our -- i.e, all hunters' -- lives. For example, very few hunters obtained the legendary bow from Sunwell, but that thing affected us all, didn't it."
he never stated this is a list of the best hunter gear of 2008. Just the gear that has affected a hunters life, and to some extent that affected him personally.
you whined that the axe was number one compared to a spear with better stats which was lower ranked. if you read what BRK said The drop rate for the spear was high to the point is was getting DE'd all the time, and it also dropped in a regular 5 man. So an axe that with a bad drop rate, from a 10 man raid would rate higher to me that a spear that drops from a regular 5man with a high drop rate.
that's just my opinion. BRK rules!
Khalima Dec 31st 2008 10:02AM
EDIT:
"The loot doesn't need to be epic or powerful to make the list, but it does have to have some Significance. "
The Elitist Jerk Dec 31st 2008 10:11AM
Significance is what makes you DPS better, not "OH WOW SHINY" or "OH MY GOD I RAN A CRAP HEROIC 9001 TIMES TO GET IT OH WAIT IT SUCKS". Period, EoD.
This is what separates the mouthbreather idiot who can't MD from the pre-TBC chaintrapper who tops meters every benchmark boss.
"So an axe that with a bad drop rate, from a 10 man raid would rate higher to me that a spear that drops from a regular 5man with a high drop rate."
Seriously? This axe is worse unless you're hitcapped and hitcap never happened on Karazhan level simply because getting 142 hit required +30 hit scope on ranged weapon and all engineers rerolled something useful in TBC. If I REALLY have to explain why hit is the most important stat, I'll have to revoke your hunter license.
"The drop rate for the spear was high to the point is was getting DE'd all the time, and it also dropped in a regular 5 man."

Agreed with this mostly but give BRK his due. It's just opinion after all. It's okay to disagree with him. I'd put the 2-piece T5 as #1 and the S3 axe as #2, followed by the 150 badge xbow at #3. I'm all about accessability.
dpoyesac Dec 31st 2008 3:48PM
There is a very good chance that Elitist Jerk is a better hunter than I ever was. Good chance, even, that he is a better, more skillful and more knowledgeable hunter than the beloved BRK.
But it doesn't really sound like he ENJOYS the game much, does it? That's why BRK's essential message will always be so important to remember: you have to ENJOY the game first, before you worry about piddly stuff like the hit cap.
Carrin Dec 31st 2008 4:34PM
I don't know what you mean "This axe is worse unless you're hitcapped and hitcap never happened on Karazhan level "
I was hitcapped going into Kara, just required using some gems is all, and some spicey Talbuk. It wasn't difficult, didn't even have to sacrifice good socket bonuses either.
And "Significance is what makes you DPS better, not "OH WOW SHINY" or "OH MY GOD I RAN A CRAP HEROIC 9001 TIMES TO GET IT OH WAIT IT SUCKS". Period, EoD."
And that's where you lost it, you may define it that way, but the person who wrote this post defines it differently. He's defining it as, what a poster says later on, "Memories" This is a nostalgic post. Not a "if you didn't have these you sucked" post.
You also forgot one thing. This is BRK we're reading. Outside of bring MQoSRDPS and his kitty Hobbes, what he likes to do the most is throw out a grenade like this, and watch the chaos that ensues :P
Note: And yes EJ, I saw what you did there.
Rilgon Dec 31st 2008 5:41PM
I was hitcapped going into Kara, just required using some gems is all, and some spicey Talbuk.
And I was hitcapped without gemming or food. All it took was some gear analysis and some cherry-picking of the right pieces.
The Elitist Jerk Jan 1st 2009 7:29PM
Spicy Hot Talbuk. Comes from the cooking daily. Now let's check the NPC, courtesy of WoWDB and the wiki:
The Rokk - Discovered in 2.3.
So when you were doing Karazhan, I was doing Black Temple and I wasn't even in a good guild.
I'm glad you saw what I did there, that was the point.
Zach Dec 31st 2008 9:46AM
BRK is great. We should allow him to smoke some good shit then make a 'WTF' post like this. The crossbow is not bad, its in the right place. The t5 set bonus should be at no.1 though imho. The legendary is crap, they give hunters a legendary then introduce an expansion soon after.

When is the next podcast coming up?
The Elitist Jerk Dec 31st 2008 9:55AM
KJ was killed world first on may 25th, if memory serves.
WOTLK was released on november 13th.
You can't possibly say 6 months isn't enough time to kill KJ and pray to the RNG gods that the freakin' bow drops.
Zach Dec 31st 2008 9:58AM
Yes I can, and I have.
Lyraat Dec 31st 2008 9:59AM
Bah. Legacy. I think because I was so lucky with Sonic Spear (four SL runs) and the Demon Stalker Gauntlets (first Curator kill, got them before the GM, who had missed out on four previous attempts but wasn't there for my attempt), I never got to see Legacy drop. Still haven't. Kept getting R+J. Tis the reason I hate Opera: cool event, but the loot table should be the same. The way it is, Legacy's drop rate goes from 10% (or whatever it is) to 3% cause you have to get Crone out of three possible scenarios.
And yeah, CRS = ugly but powerful.
Sauska Dec 31st 2008 10:21AM
Personally, i'd never include any legendary in the list, because so few hunters ever had the pleasure of owning one. I would rather include humble blue trinkets like "Abacus of violent odds".
Also, i can't believe BRK didn't mention "Dagger of Bad Mojo", only THE best dual wielding weapon for hunters!
kunukia Dec 31st 2008 10:36AM
I still have my 'Abacus of Violent Odds'! I can't give it up, it served me so well! It sits in my bank, dusty and lonely. I wish I could put it into the stables, with my boar, and they could comfort each other.
HunterFromTheStart Jan 2nd 2009 7:32AM
I never even came close to owning the Bow from KJ, however, you can't say that it didn't affect every single one of us, most especially when it was given to a FRogue over 2 hunters. No, I can't find the link, but it was a HUGE thing way back when. Anyone who loved the Hunter class, not just played it because it was supposedly EZMode, felt the chest pains of a near cardiac arrest the moment they read that post. Even my brother had some choice words, and he plays a rogue!!!
Ugkul Dec 31st 2008 10:48AM
Not a bad list. Significance does not equal DPS. elitist jerk stop whining and calling people names. At least BRK can write well. I fell asleep after your first sentence. You must be a total bore in real life.
