I've wondered about that myself. They state that the game happens something like five years after the end of Warcraft III. But that's presumably WoW classic, 1.0 (or whatever the number of the first, pre-content patch game was, I don't know), and a lot has happened since then. Even if you assume Maraudon, Dire Maul, Zul'Gurub and Zul'Aman were there all along before they were playable, there's been a massive war effort against the Silithid in Ahn'Qiraj; the scourge invasion spearheaded by Naxxramas; the reopening of the Dark Portal, crash of the Exodar and alliance between the Blood Elves and the Horde; Kael'Thas' abduction of Muru... all of that would have taken at least as long in real time as the in-game events lasted, and probably longer. So as of the attack on Northrend, how much time has passed?
