The police was exactly the right response. The point is not to humiliate the kid, or to harm him, and it isn't a violent response. The point is to have someone who is trained to handle the situation get into a position to stop the suicide before it happens. A person intent on committing suicide can be very violent and dangerous. Suicidal thoughts are generally a symptom of depression, which can be treated. However, if someone actually commits suicide they can no longer be helped. That is the point of a police response.
