The Queue: Pandamonium

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft.
Welcome! You probably noticed I skipped yesterday. Why? Because I felt like it. Yeah, how do you like them apples? I sure showed you! You got owned, y'all.
Uh, anyway. Alexran asked...

Why exactly did Blizzard skip out on the Pandaren as a playable race? I remember hearing something about racism or that the Chinese government would invade Blizzard's HQ. Whats the deal?
It's a completely baseless rumor, one that Blizzard themselves shot down at BlizzCon 08. China doesn't care if there are Pandaren in the game. Now, there are some things that have been censored due to regional laws or restrictions, but it's typically done specifically in that region.
Germany doesn't want red blood, so they don't have it. The9 altered many Undead models to pass a Chinese censorship review. Forsaken have elbows in China. When you die you leave behind a tombstone instead of a skeleton. Abominations aren't spilling their guts all over. It's not a crazy mystical thing. It's just tighter censorship on specific things.

The Pandaren started as an April Fool's joke, and Blizzard has included little nods to them here and there for fan service purposes. Just like all of their pop culture nods. I don't think we're ever going to see playable Pandaren or visit Pandaria for that reason, not because of a rumor/myth about China.
Smurk asked...
Awhile ago, I thought I read a post that mentioned land mounts would be able to swim after an upcoming patch. Was that just a rumor, or was it confirmed? And if the latter, do we know if/when it's still happening?
This is true, it's something I forgot about a couple of days ago when I answered the question about upcoming patch 3.1 features. Water won't dismount you anymore, according to the developers at BlizzCon. There's always a chance this could get delayed for some reason, but it's one of the few things that has a solid ETA.
Laroque asked...
Okay what's the deal with Riding Crop? I just actually read it again, when did they make it only affect characters 70 or below? As in needing to be level 69 to use it, and isn't it the most USELESS trinket in game?
Yes, as we've been saying since the Wrath beta, they're making the Riding Crop obsolete on purpose. It was a clunky mechanic and they weren't fond of the implementation, so they threw it out completely.
Originally they had made the item a single-use enchantment for your mounts, which was working alright (though more expensive). Then they changed mounts over to our current system, where you learn them as spells. The enchantment thing wouldn't work there, and the new system was just as much of a pain. Every time you get a new mount, you'd need to enchant it. Nobody wants that.
They threw them out. Whatevs!
Klo asked...
Are there any quests that lead into the 10-man raids? I've got a couple of group quests in Icecrown left in my quest log and am wondering if they will eventually point me toward The Obsidian Sanctum or Naxxramas. My guild is about to start running Naxx and I want to know if I need to get these group quests done so I can complete Naxx quests while we're running it.
There really aren't any quests for the 10-man raids at all. There are quests that tell you the story behind some of them, like Naxxramas and Eye of Eternity, but there isn't a Kill Kel'thuzad quest or a Kill Sartharion quest, for example. There is a Kill Malygos quest, but you get it by killing Sapphiron in Naxx. He drops an item that starts the quest. Only one person can loot it, so be aware of that in case your raid thinks anybody can get it and it gets accidentally ninja'd or something.

The reason they didn't put a PANDA race... because it is purely stupid.
Imagine your MT as a panda decked in T7... wow
Marc Sadowski Jan 2nd 2009 4:41PM
That would be pretty awesome, actually.
Dunster Jan 2nd 2009 4:45PM
Imagine your MT as a panda decked in T7... AWESOME
Fixed
Cactusham Jan 2nd 2009 4:54PM
That's one of the best things I can imagine. it would be AWESOME.
Here's hoping the next xpac brings us PANDAS
Ugkul Jan 2nd 2009 4:56PM
Yeah I'm sure pink-haired gnome death knights are way more epic.

The reason they didn't implement a Panda class is because EVERYONE would reroll.

"Imagine your MT as a COW decked in T7... wow"
Re-fixed.

Actually, one of our main tanks is usually a wolver.
I've got some baby spice ... next time he's going to be a wolver pup!
Alanid Jan 2nd 2009 8:45PM
Sorry to burst the bubble guys - but from what I've been noticing its more than likely that a new alliance race will be high elves over panderan.
But yeah - a panda kitted out in full gear would would pretty cool!

*would look

Ok, I see the riding crop thing as a crock of crap... The whole "It won't function with the current way of summoning mounts" makes no sense. It works just fine if you're level 70. Chalk it up as one more thing Blizz has done to annoy the masses.
Alex Ziebart Jan 2nd 2009 4:11PM
I do not think you read what I wrote, at least not how it is written.
Greth Jan 2nd 2009 4:14PM
I think you're misunderstanding -- it definitely still works below level 70. What they were saying was that Blizz was trying to come up with a way to make it work without it taking up a trinket slot somewhat arbitrarily, something they couldn't get working with the current mount implementation.
Frankly, I thought it was a pain -- hell, at least 70% of the reason I got Outfitter was so taht I wouldn't have to think about the stupid Riding Crop. It'd be great if they could come up with a way to make it "stick" to you, or whatever, but frankly I don't miss that +10% speed at all. 280% is pretty damn fast.
Ikarus Jan 2nd 2009 5:51PM
I think a cool idea would be to make a 7th glyph spot just for mount glyphs. one could increase movement speed. They could have on that reduces the chance to be knocked off while attacked. Maybe one that increase mount swim speed since you'll be able to use them in water come the next patch. I'm sure there's other possible glyphs too
Ikarus Jan 2nd 2009 6:02PM
doh...JDM kinda beat me to it
Riley Jan 2nd 2009 6:07PM
i think it should just be a one use item that gives you a passive skill
JDM Jan 2nd 2009 4:13PM
It would make sense to me if they made the Riding Crop replacement a simple minor glyph.
Mark Jan 2nd 2009 5:27PM
How about it's an item you keep in your inventory much like the haunted memento: If it's in your inventory, you get a mount speed buff.
Damn, I'm smart.
JDM Jan 3rd 2009 2:01AM
@Mark
That would be fine by me, but to my knowledge so far Blizzard hasn't ever made anything which sits in your bag do anything non-cosmetic.
It would certainly be nice if it happened, though.
Trellso Jan 3rd 2009 6:40AM
@JDM
There HAVE been in-bag items that did non-cosmetic things. At least one. Having the Vitreous Focuser in your inventory allows you to pick up reagentss for the repeatable hand-in taking out the cauldrons in WPL . http://www.wowwiki.com/Vitreous_Focuser
