Death Knight gets Thunderfury
Here's a world first I never thought I'd see via Deathknight.info: The first Death Knight with a Thunderfury! Night Elf Death Knight Dragoth of Frostmane-EU grabbed the legendary sword a couple weeks back, and has the achievement to prove it (It's under the Feats of Strength category). Certainly, this was no small task in and of itself. Sure, you can probably do most of the questline with four or five people now, but you'll still find yourself in Molten Core begging for the bindings to drop for at least a few weeks, and that doesn't even count the elementium.
But of course, there's a pretty big question that's simple enough: Death Knights can get Thunderfury? Yes, the bindings are now usable by all classes. German CM Rynundu confirmed this, and added that a future patch will get rid of the class restrictions on the tooltip. I have to admit, I may be a 2-hander diehard, but I'd have to reconsider dual wielding if one of those weapons was the Thunderfury. The DPS is nothing to write home about anymore, but damn if it doesn't have style.
Now here comes the next question: Will we see a Warlock walking around with Thunderfury just for the heck of it soon? And will we see the class restrictions come off of Illidan's Warglaives? This certainly would seem to open the door to just that. I have to admit, a pair of those might look cool too. But I'll still laugh at you if you try to roleplay a Death Knight Demon Hunter.

There's a difference between "idiotic" and "incorrect", you self-important prick

I'm fine with any classes with legendaries.
But, if Frostmourne IS obtainable, I swear to the Holy Light, Blizz, make it Deathknight/Paladin unique or I will hunt you down.
I will DIE if I see it in the hands of a hunter.
Can-O-War Jan 3rd 2009 3:27PM
warriors...? why would a paladin get dibs for an unholy weapon? don't say Arthas, cause as soon as he had it he was a death knight, something blizzard isn't going to do to every paladin who picks one up.
The Elitist Jerk Jan 3rd 2009 3:50PM
Get ready to die because I'm farming MC every week to get bindings.
Amaxe Jan 3rd 2009 3:52PM
Well, this is an old concept of it:
http://www.wowwiki.com/Frostmourne#BlizzCon_revelation
Blizz shot that down real fast though

For one, since we've got the Warglaives, it's somewhat guaranteed that Frostmourne will be an item.
But IMO, Frostmourne is not the kind of thing that belongs to players even if, for once, anyone who knew the story behind the blade would want it, and everyone who didn't would say "it looks cool" so it would be kind of hard to limit it to one/two classes.
That being so, i'm much more fond of frosty being an gimmick in the LK fight (for example, gives an buff to the one who picks it but starts to consume him, thus making the player see no difference between ally or foe) than an actual item you'd have to see in hands of "everyone" (since we all know that Citadel is probably not going to be as hard as Sunwell), after all, Frostmourne belongs to the Lich King, and no one else :)
As for paladins, why not Ashbringer? I'm positive that Blizz can "bend the lore" to make it possible if they wished so.
DragonFireKai Jan 3rd 2009 5:16PM
Someone didn't play WCIII. The last mission of the human campaign had Arthas calling upon the holy light to smite the scourge and Mal'Ganis, with Frostmourne in his hand.
JamieG Jan 3rd 2009 5:21PM
Frostmourne turned Arthas into the Lich King, and so would turn any one into a similar being. A savage orc warrior, for example, would be easier to corrupt than a noble paladin heir to the throne.
We won't be seeing any new expansion packs about the first person to claim Frostmourne as their weapon ingame and then turn into the Lich King.
Unless they create some weird lore that the curse is broken when Arthas is slain by some massive power, i.e. Tirion with the Ashbringer. But really, something this lore heavy and overly powerful would only be available in game if Blizzard sold out everything it valued.
autumnbear Jan 3rd 2009 5:06PM
Blizz won't 'bend the lore' to make anything like the Ashbringer attainable.
They also said that Shamans were Horde specific, that Paladins were Alliance only. They said that Druids could only be found in Azeroth (no Broken Draenie or Blood Elf dungeon boss Druids), and that Alliance and Horde could never share a neutral town (though now-a-days we can, and although the language barrier still exists, you can 'Inspect' the enemy players' gear).
Humans and Trolls were 'maxed out' at 6 character slots, Deathknights could never be considered a 'hero class', and mounted combat would never happen (hello vehicles!).
So, nope. Ashbringer will definately 'never' come around. I'm still waiting for my Human Druid. n_n
Amaxe Jan 3rd 2009 6:40PM
Well let's look at some of your statements:
1) "They also said that Shamans were Horde specific, that Paladins were Alliance only."
So they did, but Blizz had to change that because they could not keep them separate and equal in power
2) "They said that Druids could only be found in Azeroth"
Yes, and that is where the NE and Tauren come from. That doesn't mean they can't move elsewhere, and what they do with NPCs don't affect PCs
3) "Alliance and Horde could never share a neutral town "
That was a technical issue at the time, and one they fixed obviously.
4) "Humans and Trolls were 'maxed out' at 6 character slots,"
That seems to be a balance concern. Personally I think logically the DK only works for Human and Forsaken from a lore perspective as they would have been on Lordaeron, not the other races (the DK start quests make no sense from a Horde POV except from the Forsaken)
5) Deathknights could never be considered a 'hero class', "
I never heard the "DK could never be a hero class" as once they started constructing them, that was what they were billed as.
6) "and mounted combat would never happen (hello vehicles!)."
Again, technical problems now fixed
So, these issues have nothing to do whether we will see Ashbringer. They could bring it in of course, but one would hope it was a very rare thing indeed so you didn't see 200 people in Dalaran running around with it

this is actually a reply to the last 2 posts.. basically one long post about 2 swords...
first off Frostmourn didn't turn Arthas into the Lich King... for the lights sake its been said to death that Arthas and the Lich King are actually still 2 beings, and if you've at all seen The Lich King talk in any of his appearances around Northrend you'll see that its LK talking and not Arthas, ones just living inside the other..
Frostmourn was a link for the Lich King to take control over whoever touched it. So lets say Mauradin wasn't as smart as he was and he touched it, Arthas would be either dead or have no memory now and we'd have a Dwarf shaped Lich King. Frostmourn gave Arthas power, it also let ol' LK into his head so he could start corrupting him, it wasn't till Arthas reached the frozen throne, broke the ice and wore THE ARMOR (because he wanted the power back that he grew to like and he was losing) did LK bind to him.. Even still LK is just using Arthas as a host, if someone else were to somehow get THE ARMOR we'd just have a different person to shake the fist at.. seriously the WC3 cinamatics have to be on youtube, they're short WATCH THEM, they aren't that confusing...
honestly we're fighting a ghost but shaking our fist at Arthas, unless the ideal is that Arthas brought the majority of the destruction BEFORE he binded with the LK, something he could have just as well not done, which means we're hunting him for that. but all of this is REALLY unclear because just about every NPC is saying "Arthas Arthas Arthas" and that just makes me think they're unclear about how the LK works also, which is fine with me because that makes it more realistic, if they knew how he works they'd also have him killed already.
also blizzard has said that they don't want Frostmourn to be a player item, the sword is just to dangerous even though it doesn't make who holds it into the Lich King.. The only reason players could hope to take the warglaives from Illiadan was because he stole them off the corpse of Azzinoth just like we've taken them from him. fair is fair and finder keepers and all that
as for the next post I'm sure that's sarcasm I'm detecting but still blizzard will bend lore when they think it can make sense. so here's how your thought was ludicrous.
Shamans and Paladins were faction specific because they wanted unique qualities for each faction TILL they realized that those unique qualities actually hindered those classes/factions in some of the fights they were planning for BC..they couldn't come up with fights that would use those one class but would be doable by the opposing class on the opposing side.. for example: if you raided MC back in the day and did Garr but were told you can't have warlocks to banish because only the other faction could have them how unfair would that be? that's how blizzard saw it for pallies/shammies, they couldn't code fights that both of them could do given their different spell sets and class roles, so that created 2 classes that couldn't be exploited to their fullest.. so they came up with a hair brained story about space shaman and light aliens here we are, both sides have every thing now..
The thing that I'll say about the druid comment is that druidism is a lot like shamanism, even look at both class trees in the game: Caster/melee/healing. granted one can tank as well but still, the idea that druidism couldn't have seeds in shamanism or vise versa is single minded..
also that there shouldn't be any BE druids is just about as single minded.. Wowwiki's article on druids races states that the highborn/high elves/whatever have practiced druidism as druid magi and also that their rangers practiced it considering their time spent with nature. given that the bloodelves are relatives/descendant of these people its safe to say it came from there and that its rare within that aspect.. also if you look in the list of named druid npcs you'll see at least 2 humans.. the idea that a form of magic couldn't be taught to any one is again closed minded, its the fact that the majority don't practice it that doesn't make it a player class.
moving on: Horde and Alliance could never share a neutral town?.. any one remember Booty Bay? Ratchet? Everlook? Gadgetzan?.. yeah they weren't towns that we spent all our time in, or were even main hubs, but they have the some of the same things that Shatt and Dalaran share but in smaller scale, ex: banks. so I'm hoping you were making a point at the tech capabilities of hundreds of players being in 1 place at a time (though I'm sure at some point booty bay had this issue) and not some unthoughtful remark on neutral towns..
trolls and humans maxed out the at 6 character slots because of balancing the over all scheme of things.. i don't remember completely but before BC there was a similar amount of the existing classes on both sides except for paladins on the alliance and priests on the horde ( there were only 2 pally races on alliance and 2 priest races on horde).. now with the 2 newer races its a little more balanced and expanded.
as for any statement about DK's and why every one can be one its because ANY one could die, but only few can be considered powerful enough to be a DK.. the Scourge proved before the expansion that they can reach even to shatt with their plague so even any comments of draeni not being of our world is uncalled for, specially since the in game time frame that WotLK came out at its been 2 years since draeni discovered to have landed, 2 years of them being all over the world including plagued places like the plaguelands, where it could be said that they were processed as Death knights. so yes they can be DK's also.
Hero class is going to be a name that's going to phase out once it stops being new, honestly i think for the most part it has already.. the word "hero" is only in there because you can only become one for having a level 55 on your account, if you could start it when you first start a account it'd just be a class like any other.
mounted combat still isn't in game, i can throw a quest bomb from a mount but i cant cast a spell from one, i cant use my weapons from one.. Siege Vehicles aren't mounts, they're siege vehicles.. i know that's gotta sound like splitting hairs but its blizzards terms, not mine.
those issues really don't have any bearing on Ashbringer, but the lore HAS been changed for the sword just the same.. the Ashbringer has been passed to Tirion Fordring and has been cleansed. No player will hold it because, again i'm sure blizzard will say it sooner/ later or may have said it already, the sword is just to powerful.
people would be one shotting all the bosses in Naxx with it. The Lich King is even afraid of it, and seeing as the forsaken's new plague weakened him a little I can see it defenitly killing him. so yeah players having it is of course the best course of action for the game to be any more difficult then it is now...
The only way i can see it being used by a player is in the same way we were able to use the legendary weapons to fight Kael. it will be a one time use, fade away when the battle is over, weapon that we'll get thrown at us when we fight the Lich King.. then i can see a cinematic put in place showing it being destroyed along with the Lich king, as a whole balance of powers thing, like Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker but in a sword form.
Amaxe Jan 3rd 2009 9:49PM
I could be wrong, but from my reading of the Lore, Arthas and his ruthlessness was what made it possible for him to be entrapped, with his seeking his revenge at all costs, claimed the Frostmourne as his own, and was possessed.
Part of the Ebon Blade story line deals with what amount of Arthas' humanity still exists, but I won't deal with it here to avoid spoilers. I do want to see what Blizz does though with this when the LK is defeated

The fact that Wrath has been out for less than two months now shows that this actually was a fairly small task thanks to the DK's phenomenal luck. I cleared MC weekly for about half a year back pre-BC and I never saw a single binding drop.

Frostmourne just turned Arthas into an exceptionally powerful Death Knight, effectively the "living" weapon of the Lich King.
Arthas' body was not possessed/fused with Ner'zhul's mind until Arthas (still a death knight) was compelled to put on the Helm of Domination and the Plate of the Damned.
So technically, Frostmourne would make perfect lore sense as a Death Knight-only weapon (this is because if you gave it to anyone else, I.E., a paladin, it would turn them into a death knight, and Blizz has explicitly stated no class/race changes, ever.).
The other way that It could work is that it is accessible to Death Knights, wherein it is simply very, very powerful and changes nothing (or maybe lets you enslave non-elite undead). For Pallies, it could simply change all spells cast to shadow damage/healing and also be very powerful. For Warriors, heck, I don't know, I'd say it makes a percentage of your melee damage shadow/frost damage, but that would be OP.
Just have a different version of it for each class, just like Atiesh.
It would be exceedingly cool if there was a colossal quest where you had to retrieve Frostmourne, the Plate of the Damned, and the Helm of Domination, and then escort the person who looted them to Tirion Fordring, through hordes of Scourge.
At the end, the helm and plate (and the spirit of the Lich King) are destroyed, and the sword becomes usable.
I think it would be cool if any melee-focused sword-using class could get a different, specific, and legendarily powerful version of Frostmourne via a quest involving killing the Lich King etc.
But that's just my take.
erogroth Jan 3rd 2009 11:38PM
Not fair. It took me 6 months to get my bindings and the better part of a year to farm up 100 Arcane Crystals which at the time had a lower drop rate. Then the elementium. I think from the time the first binding dropped to when I got the sword was almost 11 months.

A bit of a warning, when I tried to click on the link for the picture to see it larger (older person, bad eyes), I was immediately sent to one of those "scan your computer and install software" sites. I don't know if this is from the deathknight site, or if it someone has hacked into that site, but it sure presents a security risk. I'm changing my Blizz password immediately.
