My personal rule is: if you play a spy, be prepared for the consequences. You can tell if someone is just trying to 'escape the rules' by taking up an undercover rule if they weasel out of the more unpleasant sides of it (being discovered, betraying friends, having to keep up the lie at all times etc.) at every opportunity. Of course, some characters just never get into such situations because of the way others play with them, then it may be a bit harder to tell how 'earnest' they are about their role.
