Shifting Perspectives: Gearing your Restoration Druid at 80
Every Tuesday, Shifting Perspectives explores issues affecting Druids and those who group with them. This week we take a look at how to gear a PvE Restoration Druid at level 80, in the hopes of preventing other trees from suffering our fate during our first 10-man Naxx run, which -- no, no, it's too painful even to think about. Pass the schnapps.EDIT: This guide has been updated for patch 3.3 and Icecrown content. Please click here for a guide on gearing a new restoration druid as of May 2010.
Greetings readers, and welcome to Wrath Gear-A-Palooza 2009. We'll be running one of these for each Druid spec.
I'm not going to "rank" gear numerically, because I think that's a fairly unhelpful means of organizing items when your access to all of them as a fresh 80 may be very limited. Generally you're going to have access to quest rewards and faction gear before you get access to badge pieces or oft-uncooperative heroic drops, so I've organized the list by where you can get particular drops. It's generally safe to assume that a heroic drop is better than a blue you're using from an Icecrown quest, but not always. If you're starting to move into higher levels of gear, I found the following links to be incredibly helpful, and I hope you do too:
- HoTsTree's gear list
- Resto4Life's post on Wowhead filters and pre-raid gear in the main slots
- Elitist Jerks post on Restoration Itemization and PvE Healing as a Druid
To the extent that I've ranked anything, for inclusion in this list I'm prioritizing +spellpower and +spirit (and secondarily +intellect) over everything else.
I am a very big fan of spirit, both on gear and in talents, and this gear list assumes that you are taking relevant Spirit-related talents in the Restoration tree (which are generally a part of standard Restoration builds at 80 anyway). If you're not, you'll want to prioritize mp5 gear more than I have here. Mana regeneration isn't as big a deal if you do mostly 5-mans and heroics, but if you're planning to raid at either the 10-man or 25-man level, you have some fairly lengthy fights ahead of you. This gets much worse if your guild is going for any of the raid achievements, as many of them (particularly Sartharion with drakes up) will tax your mana supply.Gear is divided into the following categories --
Best overall: If there's one piece that's just better than anything else you can get, I'll have it listed here. Most of these will cost you Emblems of Heroism or a truckload of gold, however.
Best drop/s: Self-explanatory, the best (typically heroic) 5-man drops you can get.
Best quest piece: Also self-explanatory, but fair warning -- if you're looking to get most of your pieces outside of 5-mans, many of the quests rewarding the best pieces are linked to dungeons (usually normal) or group quests.
Best faction piece: If a quartermaster offers a useful piece, it'll be here. You'll get convenience at the cost of having to deal with pieces that are usually a dog's breakfast of caster stats, though.
Runner-up: This is kind of a catch-all term for good, usable, or even excellent pieces you can get by other means. If there's a blue or epic BoE piece floating around the AH, or a workhorse 5-man drop you can also use, it'll be here. Some of the pieces in the runner-up slot may seem odd for inclusion there (e.g. epics like raid BoE's or Moonshroud), but as far as I'm concerned, if it's going to cost you a metric ton of gold to get them, they are firmly optional. You do not need to be equipped in full epics to raid as long as you're not lazy about enchants and gems.
Enchant: Just in case you have any gold left after gearing up. Ha ha! I kid because I love.

Best overall: Helm of Anomalus from heroic Nexus.
Best drops: Crown of Unbridled Magic from the Cache of Eregos in heroic Oculus, or Forgotten Shadow Hood from Salramm the Fleshcrafter in heroic Culling of Stratholme. These are actually pretty similar overall to the Anomalus helm, so if you get one of the three, don't bother trying to get another one if you've spent the money on gems and the enchant.
Best quest piece: Shroud of Temptation, from the quest Cleansing Drak'tharon in Grizzly Hills/Drak'tharon Keep.
Best faction piece: Helm of the Majestic Stag, available at honored with the Kirin Tor.
Runner-up: Elder Headpiece, from Elder Nadox in heroic Old Kingdom. No meta socket, but it'll tide you over until you can get a helm that has one.
Enchant: Arcanum of Blissful Mending, available at revered with the Wyrmrest Accord.
Meta: While you're gearing up, an Insightful Earthsiege Diamond is going to be helpful. With better gear, an Ember Skyflare might ultimately be better than the static proc from the Insightful. This is the subject of some discussion over at EJ.

NECK
Best drop: Amulet of Dazzling Light, from Anomalus in heroic Nexus.
Best quest piece: Amulet of the Crusade, from the quest The Admiral Revealed in Icecrown.
Best faction piece: n/a.
Runner-up: Dragon-Prow Amulet, a BoE from heroic Utgarde Keep trash.
SHOULDERS
Best drops: Silent Spectator Shoulderpads, from Svala Sorrowgrave in heroic Utgarde Pinnacle, or Mantle of Deceit, from the Dark Runed chest in heroic Culling of Stratholme.
Best quest piece: Lightning Infused Mantle, from the quest Diametrically Opposed in Storm Peaks.
Best faction piece: n/a.
Runner-up: Runecaster's Mantle, a BoE from heroic Utgarde Keep trash.
Enchant: Greater Inscription of the Crag, available at exalted with the Sons of Hodir. However, if you have 400 Inscription, you'll have access to Master's Inscription of the Crag, which you'll want to use instead.

don't play a resto druid but what a great piece!
Wish you did one for DK tanks. ; )

Read the elitest jerks thread on resto trinkets IMO, a lot of good advice even if upper end Nax/BoE drops are out of your range.
http://elitistjerks.com/f73/t37441-restoration_trinkets/
First of all though, we don't benefit too much from haste (unless you regrowth spam), so unless you're bleeding badges from raids (in which case you don't need this article), you might as well just savem and get the chestpiece or something rather than the Egg.
Things like the Majestic Dragon Figurine (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40430) are a lot easier to get than people think, what with OS being a joke and all. Even if you just hit 80 look for a competent pug and attempt to get another pally/shaman healer, then unless the caster dps wants to roll (which they shouldn't), you have a good shot at it.
Also note that the Soul Preserver mentioned in the article is bugged for druids atm, nourish and WG don't get rid of the proc leaving you able to spam them with 0 mana cost for 15 seconds. Besides that I would say it's one of the best and easiest trinkets to get for resto's at 80. Both that and the figurine help with mana and the Soul Preserver is a solid 75 sp as well.
Great article though, verrryyyy helpful for pre-nax gearing.

Something like this for every class would be godly. Actually just pallys. Then i'll be happy :D
But a great article. My little 64 druid is sitting on Outland since i've been playing my other characters more.

shows how much attention I pay....thank you!

Out of all the gear lists on this site, this has got to be the best organized. Kudos!

Great detail, organization and screencaps. Thanks for another fun article.
Thiosion Jan 6th 2009 8:22PM
Wow.
Why doesn't everyone else get a post like this?
Shivoa Jan 6th 2009 8:51PM
The Robes of Crackling Flame is a tempting chest piece but how can you currently get it without ending up weighted down with EoH that could buy a Heroes' Dreamwalker Robe weeks earlier? As far as I can work out the Kirin Tor have to be pushed from mid-Friendly up with daily cooking (150 rep a day, so easily 6+ months of daily quests if you tried to do that on its own) and then Heroics (tabard and daily dungeon quests). Am I right in thinking that until Blizzard add some dailies equivalent to most of the other factions with decent rep rewards that Kirin Tor high end rewards aren't really something you should aim for but rather just run Heroics for the EoH items?
Shivoa Jan 6th 2009 8:55PM
Oh, and as said above great article. I've been trying to do the same with wowhead searches recently, preparing to leave my solo play Boomkin behind (within touching point of Northrend Loremaster so not much need for solo spec anymore) and pick up the way of the tree.

Another neck drop you can mention is the Necromancer's Amulet, which drops off Salramm in Heroic CoS. It's very similar to the Dragon Prow Amulet, trading Stam for more Spirit. I loves me the Spirit.

As a feral druid planning to alt resto when we get dual specs, this is getting bookmarked for future reference. Many thanks.
Zelius Jan 6th 2009 10:56PM
Can anyone tell me the minimum amount of spellpower and mana regen needed in order to start healing raids?
Greenman Jan 7th 2009 1:13PM
My rule of thumb has been 1500 Spell Power and 250 MP5 while casting, to start Naxx-10. Less for heroics, more to finish Naxx-10. I've also read 1000 Spirit unbuffed is a good target. YMMV VWP
Moodan Jan 7th 2009 8:23AM
Along with what Zelius asked, what is the recommended spell power to heal heroics? My druid alt never got there in BC...
Abedabun Jan 7th 2009 9:43AM
I respeced to Resto at 80 after being a tank at 70 - thanks so much for this article, it has saved me from being a poor lost tree!
quorn Jan 7th 2009 10:59AM
This article could not have come at a better time for me. I'm currently in the process of switching from my mage to my druid alt (77 and counting!) because my raid is desperately in need of tree healers. I've been combing many sites looking for lists of the best pre-raiding gear and where to find it, and this and the EJ list are the best ones I've seen. Kudos to you for putting it together!
As someone relatively new to the druid world, I consistently enjoy your columns and their perspective on the class. Keep up the good work! :)
Greenman Jan 7th 2009 1:17PM
I like the single-score ranking idea more than the author of this piece. If nothing else, it gives you a good place to start comparing gear to build a list like this for yourself, especially once you start into Naxx and such and move beyond heroics.
That said, here's my current lootrank.com template for my resto druid: http://www.lootrank.com/wow/wr.asp?Cla=1024&Art=4&Max=40&Gem=2&n2=1&mh=8.1&mp5=33.75&Sta=2.7&mcr=8.1&spd=20.87&Int=10&Spi=20&Ver=6&usr=&ser=&grp=www&i1=0&i3=0&i4=0&i7=0&i9=0&j1=0&j2=0&k2=0&k3=0&k4=0&k5=0&k6=0
And the scores per stat used to generate this template are:
STA = 2.7
INT = 10
SPI = 20
Haste = 8.1
Crit = 8.1
MP5 = 33.75
SpPow = 20.87
Hope this helps.

I'm actually not opposed to ranked lists at all -- I use them all the time -- but that's really not what this article was meant to do. I really wanted to give pre-raid Druids of all specs an idea of where to get the best and/or most serviceable pieces by any means available to them, which I thought would be particularly helpful if you had rotten luck with a heroic drop or BoE availability/expense.
Idz44 Jan 7th 2009 6:17PM
This is a great article, I have been doing a few heroics lately and was wondering if I was ready for 10 man content.
Two items that I didn't see on the list that I currently have and at least one is easy to get.
1. Prison Manifest - This is a great trinket and is BOE so you can find it in the AH. On my realm it goes for between 70 and 90g. I saw one drop in Heroic Violet Hold last night as well.
2. Putresent Bands - These come out of Naxx but are BOE and are really nice. They are usually expensive but I have seen them multiple times on the AH from 4500g to 9000g. I got lucky and found them for 1500g which is still alot but there are not many bracers better in the game right now for a resto druid even after you start raiding.
Thanks again for the list!
