The Overachiever: Completing I've Toured the Fjord

Welcome to the inaugural edition of The Overachiever. We're here to help you to finish off the Achievements on your list. And, apparently talk about ourselves in the third person. We're crazy like that.
Today's column covers the Howling Fjord quest achievement "I've Toured the Fjord" and will help you find those last missing quests to rack up the 130 (Alliance) or 105 (Horde) needed. This is one of the prerequisites for the Loremaster of Northrend Achievement (A/H) which itself is a prereq for uber-Achievement The Loremaster (A/H) which grants a title (you guessed it, "Loremaster") and a spiffy tabard with a quest exclamation on it.
You should know that there is no way to tell what quests you have completed in a zone and which one's you haven't. You can only open your Achievements window (Y key) and see how many you've done. Most likely you have hit all the quest hubs for your faction and are just a few shy of earning the Achievement. Or maybe you've completed all you can find, but are clearly missing some major cluster of quests. Here's what to do.
Step 1: Check out the excellent list of Howling Fjord quests split up by faction and quest hub on WoWWiki. Note the Neutral faction quests at the bottom of the list. If you are stuck at around 80 quests, head to the Ancient Lift on the west coast. A tuskarr there starts a chain of about 20 or so.
Alternately, go to WoWHead's Howling Fjord page, where you can set their map to show you quest giver locations for your faction (see image at the top of this post for an example.) Mouse over the pins to see which quests those quest givers hand out or click on them to go to the WoWHead page for that NPC.
Step 2: Generally you will come across these drops while running all the other quests, but in case you missed any, here are the items dropped from mobs that start quests.
- Gjalerbron Attack Plans (A/H) - Drops from mobs in Gjalerbron in the northwest snowy mountains of the zone. Starts a 2 chain quest with the second one requiring one more player to complete.
- It's a Scourge Device (A/H) - A scourge device drops from the mobs around the pulsing purple crystals dotting the Chillmere Coast in the far northwest. Starts a 2 chain quest that can be soloed easily.
- Stop the Ascension! (A/H) - While you are merrily slaying the crazed Vrykul of Skorn in the north of the zone, one of them will probably drop a Vrykul Scroll of Ascension. Click on it and head up to the top of the village next to the big bonfire to summon the crazed ghost boss Vrykul scary dude.
- Old Icefin sits on a small island off the Chillmere Coast. He gives out the very sad Trident of the Son quest.
- If you are Horde, head a little southeast of Nifflevar to pick up two quests:
Finally, if you are having a tough time completing quests, consider AddOns that provide in-game help with finding quest objectives like QuestHelper or Carbonite Quest. As long as we are on the subject, don't forget to check out our Achievement AddOns Guide.

Sounds like this will be an interesting new column. Cool! :)

:-O A column about achievements? I think I'm in heaven!
The best way to get the Loremaster achievements is to do every single quest you have in a zone. You never know how many more they're going to lead to, or what drops you're going to get that start quests along the way. Also, explore. Sometimes you can find a little quest hub you never would have known about if you didn't take the time to look around.
I want that tabard...

And, turn on the low-level quest tracker if you're 80. Some of the quests in the starter zones don't show up on the minimap unless you do.
Osi Jan 8th 2009 10:19AM
Thats not the best way to get the lore achievement, case and point, Eversong Woods, Ghostlands. Do all the quests, you will not discover everything.

I've seen a lot of references to a low-level quest tracker but I don't know how to turn it on. Is it in the main interface options? I have Carbonite also... maybe I'm just overlooking it, but I can't find it.
Laynne Jan 8th 2009 10:45AM
Osi,
You won't always find more quests when you explore, but sometimes you do. This is how I found the quests in the Crystal Vice in Dragonblight. It doesn't hurt to explore, and you can work towards the World Explorer achievement as well.

Alan, go to the tracking menu on your minimap (by default, it's a magnifying glass icon; it's where you select Find Herbs, Find Fish, etc.). When you click it (or right-click; I can't remember and I don't have WOW up to check), a menu will come up with a list of the things you can track. Low-Level Quests should be at the bottom of that menu.

Probably a little late for most people reading this, but there's an addon called QuestGuru that aside from making your quest log more organized and prettier it keeps a history of all the quests you've done by zone.

The quest achievements really aren't that hard. In fact I've been using the achievements to determine when I am done with a zone. There are actually always more quests than required for the achievement, but if you don't do any of the "go talk to the innkeeper at X" quests you will find your self looking for that last ! . Also check WoWhead, people are really good at mentioning which quests are random drops or escort quests for a guy no where near anywhere you're questing. So far all I need is Borean Tundra. And, as a bonus, this a great way to get gold. If you get bored just work on your Northrend Loremaster Achievement!

Using "we" does not mean you are referring to yourself in the third person. It probably means you're just schizophrenic.
Sinthar Jan 8th 2009 10:43AM
LOL yeah - or hes secretly the queen - she is meant to refer to herself in the 'royal plural' - or we
Talita Jan 8th 2009 10:35AM
Or perhaps we simply have a high opinion of ourselves, and speak in a manner apropriate to our stature?

Brady Jan 8th 2009 11:17AM
I love how Wikipedia is our only source of information! But it's true, "we" is a plural form of 1st person, not 3rd person.
Will Jan 8th 2009 11:28AM
Actually, I kind of hate the "universal resource" mindset of most casual Wikipedia readers, because I used to edit the site pretty heavily, and there's a whole sub-culture and community there that is quite aware of the amount of garbage articles out there. It's still great for a quick link to prove a point, or for the really simple questions: http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/

A chain in SMV sent me to Nagrand ... which sent me to Netherstorm then back to Nagrand did it for me. I had 4 or 5 left. I don't recall killing a patrol. Where is this patrol?
In Blade's Edge, fly around the Arena stadium. There's an ogre with quests that once you do them unlocks Ogri'la quests.
Also, a Netherstorm ethereal chain sent me to the northern portion of Blade's Edge for some more group questing.
I can't find the last 3 in HP and yes, I've gotten the Shattered Halls key which starts in SMV.

I can make aaaaaall this go away.
By "we" he is referring to "wowinsider" corporately - as in "we, the bloggers as represented in this instance by myself".
So no, he doesn't know the differents between third person and first person plural, but he doesn't think he's royalty.
Also Will - deploring the use of wikipedia when you got your definition from wiktionary... no comment.
grelk Jan 8th 2009 3:32PM
Oh yeh and your meaning 2 under pronoun http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/we#Pronoun gives the definition - "editorial we" I've described above.
JPN Jan 8th 2009 9:10AM
Can we please do this like...3 times a week? Or every weekday? Achievements are my FAVORITE thing about the game right now. I'm in a great guild now, but if I weren't, I would love to start an achievement-focused guild.
I'd like to see this kind of article for the BC loremaster ones - I'm stuck on a few zones and I've gotten all the LK loremasters so far with zero effort, just following the quests as I go. Blade's Edge, for example - I can't remember what I've done and haven't done but I can't find any more quests.
sara Jan 8th 2009 10:09AM
I'm having that same problem in Nagrand - where are those two last quests? Can't find them. :o(
M Jan 8th 2009 11:15AM
For me, it was the Ring of Blood quests ... the ones that I thought for sure I had done, until I didn't get the achievement following the similar chain in Zul'Drak . Going back and doing the Ring of Blood gave me Nagrand and Outland achievements.
