Breakfast Topic: Unpopular classes
Once upon a time, way back in vanilla WoW, it was common knowledge that rogues and hunters were the most common classes. Raids would regularly refuse to take more of them, and it was almost assumed that all hunters were noobs. Well, at least on my realm, half of that is true: hunters are still extremely popular. However, there's hardly a rogue to be found; it seems that druids (of all classes) have taken their place. My guild, for instance, has zero level 80 rogues.
Druids were once one of the least played classes, but I see them all over the place now. I also see quite a few death knights, of course, and more shamans than I would expect (given that I play Alliance). I've also never been able to swing a stick on my realm without hitting a paladin. Warlocks are probably the next rarest class I see, after rogues. I'm aware that this varies realm-to-realm, though - what's the least popular class on your realm, according to your experience?
| Death Knight | |

| Hunter | |
| Mage | |
| Paladin | |
| Priest | |

Now it makes sense why there are no tanks on Dragonblight, they're all healers/bad DpS! I found more priests then Dk's! More then Warriors! More then Paladins! (If someone else on Dragonblight disagrees, please do so cause I'm only saying this off of this morning's population)

I don't think there's a lack of tanks on DB, however just like in BC no good tank wants to spend repair bills on heroics. Seriously, there are some terribad healers on DB.
Chris Anthony Jan 9th 2009 8:33AM
Is the implication that priests are bad DPS?
I'm just trying to make sure I understand correctly.
Calaana Jan 9th 2009 8:46AM
I believe he means the player is bad dps, not the class.
Think a hunter using auto shot and nothing else, or a mage wanding.

I am on Dragonblight as well, In our guild we are full up on healers and tanks, however we are lacking DPS.
Khanmora Jan 9th 2009 9:57AM
It never fails for me, when I'm playing my healer the group needs a tank and when I'm playing my dps we don't have a healer, etc. I am seeing a lot more lf1m healer on DB though.
Harmun Jan 9th 2009 11:02AM
What are these "healers" you speak of? I just assumed we needed to bandage ourselves between fights...
Clbull Jan 9th 2009 12:21PM
To be honest, there isn't really a tank shortage in general anymore because Death Knights (being a popular hero class) have mostly solved this shortage.
However, I have noticed a massive healer shortage on some realms.

Definitely Shamans on Stormrage EU IMO.
Eridian Jan 9th 2009 8:10AM
I think it's inevitable that as people's understanding of class mechanics becomes more sophisticated that they'll move towards rolling multi-role classes like druids/shamans/palladins, which could allow them to experience different aspects of group-play (tanking/healing/caster dps/physical dps) without creating a whole new character.
I've certainly noticed a trend away from the pure DPS classes on my server at least.
Fogel Jan 9th 2009 8:32AM
i agree with that...
because as a mage , thats what im doing... im rerolling a paladin right now
also who want to be a clothie that cast ... when there is melee that critting your face for 7-10k just by hitting an instant button... people arent naive....
but thats the game that want it !!!
Sayas Jan 9th 2009 9:49AM
I hadn't thought about it before but you're right! If you are going to level just one character, why make that a single purpose character?

"If you are going to level just one character, why make that a single purpose character?"
My first character (and my main) is a Druid which I love to play. But my alt is mage which I chose precisely because it was single class.
(1) As a single class, you will never have anybody ask you to respec for the good of the group. DPS and CC is what you do as a mage, period. You can't do anything else. There is freedom in that.
(2) Single classes are easier to play, because you don't have to keep the rotation of the various specs in your head. Is that sometimes boring? Yes. But sometimes when I playing I don't want to think.
(3) Identity. I think this is one of the most overlooked aspects of the game. As a mage I just am a mage. I'm not a cat, or a bear, or moonkin, or a tree, or a walrus. I'm a mage. My mage does enchanting and inscription because that seemed the most logical professions for a mage. That's my identity, it's who I am.
In short, there are many excellent reasons to play a single class.

To Fogel,
Thats funny, cause I'm both a mage and a warrior and I'd rather my mage. If you are letting melee get that close to you in the first place, then its the not the class, its you. A mage has a number of ways to get away from melee in all of its tree's.
Frost Nova
Slow
Frostbolt / Firefrost bolt
Blink
Iceblock with instant frost nova effect.
Invis
Blastwave knock back
Mirror image
Water Elemental
Those combined with your dps should have it dead, unless this is an 80+ elite mob.

Also @ Fogal..
Why would you reroll a mage now when they're one of the most OP classes in the game with no nerfs on the horizon (unlike pallys).
You just cast slow then arcane barrage everything to death (while laughing manically I assume), when u get low on health just insta-invis to a safe spot and evocate + glyph of evocate (to regen health as well). Not to mention Mirrior Image which is one of the best lvl 80 abilities out of all the classes imo. What's not to love?
Honestly, I'd love to be a Mage right now, If you getting pwned it's cause u need to L2P not because the class is underpowered.

Now recruiting Shammies!! The shammy shortage on our realm has been so bad that we have had a couple guys roll a new shammy just so we can find one.
We will, however, gladly trade off a few of our DK's or Holy Pallies to get a new Shammy or Druid heals.
elprogramer Jan 9th 2009 8:12AM
Can we talk about the most popular class? Death Knights are still kinda new, but I'll be damned if Paladin popularity didn't jump 600%.
I kinda miss not fighting for drops.
smcn Jan 9th 2009 8:13AM
I was once in an AV with over half the group (my group, thankfully) made up of DK's and Paladins. Seriously, there was at least 10 of each.
vocenoctum Jan 9th 2009 9:08AM
I was wandering around finishing up some stuff on my prot-warrior and noticed that the same guys in LFG were still seeking a tank after a half hour of trying. I figured "what the hec, may as well" and join them...
2 DK's and a paladin (plus a hunter)! Now sure, they needed the pali for healing, but geez, how long do you wait for a tank when you've got such a group?
(The one DK kept yanking from me with deathgrip anyway, so why look for a tank...)
a Jan 9th 2009 9:19AM
*ret* paladin popularity jumped 600%.
Theres too many rets around nowadays. Worse than DK's. Its just like BC where everyone wanted to be a PvP superstar so we saw thousands of rogues. Now all the kiddies heard someone say ret is the new cool thing to do and before you know it we are flooded with rets.
