The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Patch 3.0.8 makes death less sudden

- Warriors
- Bloodthirst: Charges have been decreased to 3, but the effect has been raised to 1% per charge.
- Fury: Bloodsurge: Now has a chance to trigger from any hit with Heroic Strike, Bloodthirst, or Whirlwind.
- Fury:Titan's Grip: The hit chance penalty has been removed.
- Taunt: Range increased to 30 yards.
- Bloodthirst: Charges have been decreased to 3, but the effect has been raised to 1% per charge.
Interestingly, I specced arms last night for Malygos before I heard about these changes and played around with the spec, and even though I prefer fury for DPS I already feel bad for arms losing those big SD executes. I've read and understood the argument that it's too bursty and I hope that Blizzard is sincere in their desire to buff arms somewhere else to make up for it, but to my eyes the real losers here are PvP warriors who are already having trouble killing anything in PvP since aside from big random crits there's not really any way for a warrior to match the insane burst of the current PvP game.
It's possible to see the SD change as a PvE buff, depending on your gear. Based on my last night experience, I didn't really have any trouble getting rage as arms (indeed, my main difficulty was in understanding what I was supposed to do with all of the rage I had when I didn't have an execute handy to dump it, since I'm so used to fury) but if you were having trouble with rage then not losing all of it could actually be a DPS increase. I can't say there's any upside to the change for PvP

Since I finally did some Wintergrasp the other day (you wore me down, what can I say) I actually feel like my raiding PvE spec is more viable for the frenetic mass of combat in that place than, say a dedicated Arms PvP spec, and that just seems wrong and bad to me. I guess I had fun, but not enough to really want to go back, I just did it mostly to help get the Alliance the zone so I could raid Archavon.
The Deep Wounds change is aimed at scaling: as warrior gear gets better, the damage that ability deals will just keep going up and up and up. I understand it, even if it's not really making me happy (a lot of my damage is Deep Wounds) but I'm hoping the changes to Bloodsurge will help make up the difference. It really depends on how often it goes off once the change goes live. Right now, since BT is on a 5 second cooldown you end up waiting to see if you're going to get a Slam every five seconds, either you do or you don't (as crit rates approach 50% in raids) so hopefully it will be much less of a plodding "did I crit BT, no, ah well" experience and more a steady chance to fit an instant slam into the ability. I've always loved Bloodsurge and would very much like it to live up to its potential as the Sword and Board of Fury.
The new Glyphs coming in are pretty solid for the most part. I'm of course looking forward to the Whirlwind and Cleave changes. I use cleave a lot on trash (it's useless on a boss, of course, you're better off HSing for your rage dump when there's only one mob to hit) so the chance for cleave to chain to three makes the points I spend in Imp Cleave feel more useful to me. This is an older list from MMO Champion (things come in and go out, like the 2h DK tanking weapons, so if this doesn't actually turn up in live I apologize) but it's interesting.
- Glyph of Bloodrage - Reduces the health cost of your Bloodrage ability by 100%. (Up from 50%)
- Glyph of Cleaving - Increases the number of targets your Cleave hits by 1. (Old - Reduces the rage cost of Cleave by 5.)
- Glyph of Mortal Strike - Increases the damage of your Mortal Strike ability by 10%. (No longer reduces the healing penalty)
- Glyph of Bloodthirst - Increases the healing you receive from your Bloodthirst ability by 100%. (Up from 20%)
- Glyph of Whirlwind - Reduces the cooldown of your Whirlwind by 2 sec. (Old - Increases the number of targets your Whirlwind ability hits by 1.)
- Glyph of Victory Rush - Your Victory Rush ability has a 30% increased critical strike chance against targets above 70% health. (Old - 90% health)
- Glyph of Rending - Increases the duration of your Rend ability by 6 sec. (Up from 3 sec)
For arms, that MS glyph is a nice change for PvP warriors (who were probably loath to take it before and lose the healing penalty) and the Glyph of Rending will help you get more chances to proc Overpower. The Bloodthirst glyph will be good for soloing but I doubt any PvE warriors who have progressed past five man content would take it. Victory Rush is simply not a terribly important ability for instancing/raiding, but for soloing its a very nice change and might have some utility for PvP.
Overall it's kind of a mixed bag. If you'd asked me a week ago I would have said that 3.0.8 was nothing but positive for warriors, if in a small way (compared to the vast revamps some classes are seeing) but now I'm on the fence. I really don't like the SD change and am unhappy (if somewhat willing to wait and see how it actually affects our DPS) with the Deep Wounds change, but I'm very happy with the glyphs and the change to bloodsurge. Yay for uncertainty, I guess.

You know, a lot of what people say about Warriors nowadays sounds almost exactly like what people used to say about Ret paladins.
Having played a Paladin since release, it's eerie to hear some of these problems smacking Warriors now, of all times, after they used to be rather successful, and after they already fixed most of these exact same problems for Ret Paladins.

Matthew,
Have you considered the impact of the Deep Wounds change on AOE tanking, given that many prot warriors are currently speccing into deep wounds?
Erik Koehler Jan 9th 2009 4:10PM
not that its relevant at all, but anyone notice the worldofwarcraft.com foruns go down? weird
Max Jan 9th 2009 4:11PM
forums are down and I can't log in. stuck on 'connecting'
three other guildees having the same problem
Erik Koehler Jan 9th 2009 4:13PM
i just get the IExplorer "Page Cannot Be Found" screen >.
Max Jan 9th 2009 4:15PM
no I meant the forums are down and the GAME login servers are down too.
I can't login to the game
AyaJulia Jan 9th 2009 4:16PM
Oh, good, it's not just me. I was going through all the standard support steps--tracert (gets through to attens.net, which is Blizzard's servers) restart everything, bypass router--and no luck.
Seems like there's a missing connection between their servers and the main worldofwarcraft.com front-end server. :s
Andorhal Jan 9th 2009 4:12PM
Same thing is happening to me too, its game wide, not server related.
Benito Jan 9th 2009 4:16PM
Must be related to the rolling restarts they're doing.
Pumadam Jan 9th 2009 4:16PM
Any word on how long this down time is going to be????
John Jan 9th 2009 4:17PM
I'm glad to hear im not the only one having trouble.. i was on a boat and it just kinda stopped in the middle of nowhere. I logged out and when I tried to get back in it was stuck on authenticating
John Jan 9th 2009 4:18PM
also, my realm wasn't listed on the rolling restarts list..
Max Jan 9th 2009 4:18PM
oooh, I got to authenticating this time. still not getting to log in though
Pumadam Jan 9th 2009 4:18PM
Why does this only happen when I actually have free time to play???
Oscar Jan 9th 2009 4:19PM
Same problem here, I thought I was alone on this as the forums were still up when I was experiencing the problem. I deleted my WTF and Cache folders too >_< Mmo-champion seems to be down as well for some reason, at least I can't connect to it

What I dont get is this and reading the old glyphs sunk it in a little deeper. Why is it that warriors seem to get a type of punishment for each "buff". Example, the mortal strike glyph that gives you more but then takes away healing. Is this even worth having in there much like the 5% miss chance for TG it seems like a punishment that served no purpose. In my mind thats like building in a mechanic for MS that when you Crit with it (no glyph think pre glyphs) it would reduce healing but if you hit normal the healing reduction was the same. It makes no sense.
On that same line think to Zerker stance, 3% increased crit but 10% increased damage. Where are the penalities to DK's in their presences? I dont want to pick on the class but as a mechanics stand point it seems clunky and outdated to have such penalities tied to abilities where others are given incentive to change around. One of the reasons I liked fury was because I didnt have to stance dance to be effective maybe im lazy but I always felt like changing stances wasnt worth the penalities I had to "work around". Im sure that will make me lazy in some eyes but if the work around included a benefit and not a negative return on it id be more happy to work it into my rotation.
The old cycle of a zero sum stance dance system is getting old and GC seems to think its fine. Like stated on the forums DK's are the mother %$^&ing warrior 2.0 with all the benefits and none of the penalty. -shrug- Just my rant :)

I'm extremely unhappy with the nerfs to deep wounds as on boss fights it makes up for about 15% of my total dps. I'm just hoping that bloodsurge becomes as effective as sword and board for prot, which seems to always be up. If they make it so that slam takes the spot of deep wounds on my damage chart (slam takes up only about 10%) I guess I can live with it as a fury warrior but we'll see.
The changes to the glyphs are really no change. I never use cleave and never will, HS puts out better results for me.
I am kind of excited for the WW change down to 2 seconds as I never encounter many fights with more than 4 mobs. Faster WW=More dmg in my books.
Also, I guess I'll never be respeccing arms now because the nerf to SD means I'll never get to see those big 13k crits back to back to back which was really the only reason I would ever raid as arms.

I play an Arms warrior and that is definitely a DPS hit for me. Especially when paired with the Deep Wounds nerf. I solo alot and I do quite a few Heroics with Prot Paladins or Unholy DKs tanking (no CC AoE Fights), Bladestorm/Whirlwind is about 30% of my DPS (give or take). Going from slapping 5 mobs for 1100 (reg) - 3400 (crit) a second to 4 mobs for 1100 (reg) - 3400 (crit) a second is 1100 DPS (minimum) decrease (not including anything from Deep Wounds, Trauma, Blood Frenzy, Wrecking Crew, or Weapon Procs like Berserking).
On any Pull where there are less than 5 mobs it's no big deal (unless Adds join in) but on those pulls that ARE 5+ mobs (there are quite a few, the First boss in Utguard Keep comes to mind) that extra target is literally a lifesaver (not to mention a sweet, sweet DPS upgrade). A 2 second decrease to the cooldown is nice (especially for TG Warriors) but it seriously screws with my rotation as Arms.
I was actually using the Cleave Glyph and the Whirlwind Glyph for my multi-target build (to keep up with the other DPS Classes) but I rarely used Cleave anyway (less than 1% of my DPS) as i usually was rage starved (I hate maces, stupid Loken where's my Axe) due to a low crit rate (I think I'm at 22% at the moment, /cry).
On the plus side I hear we are getting our other 2% back in Blood Frenzy.... maybe?
draeth Jan 9th 2009 4:31PM
Hey Rossi what are your feelings on the WW Glyph change? I think it might be bad on a 5 mob pull but on anything with 4 I think we should see a dps increase, and on boss fights we should see a dps increase.
You think a 3 min boss fight you should be getting out around 18 wws (we'll be hypothetical). With the glyph we should see about 4 1/2 more WWs.
draeth Jan 9th 2009 4:36PM
Also any mathcrafters know what our soft cap should be now as TG fury without the 5% penalty? Will it be the 264 or whatever it is for single wielding arms?
It would be great to replace some +hit gems with +crit or str.
