Ready Check: Guide to Naxxramas (Construct Quarter, part 1)
Ready Check is a weekly column focusing on successful raiding for the serious raider. Hardcore or casual, ZA or Sunwell Plateau, everyone can get in on the action and down some bosses. This week, we unwisely decide to give the column to Allison "Oops, I forgot my frost resist" Robert. Not that you actually need frost resist gear for the Construct Quarter...but that's about the time she generally remembers she left hers in the bank.
Greetings, folks. Jennie's off for January, so I'll be writing Ready Check this month. Today's installment got a little long, mostly because Patchwerk tends to be a stumbling block to guilds still gearing up in Naxxramas, and Grobbulus is a little complicated to describe. So tonight I'll post on the first two bosses in the Construct Quarter, and tomorrow I'll finish with Gluth and Thaddius. Next week we'll take a look at Sapphiron and Kel'thuzad in order to finish off Naxx.
The Construct, or Abomination, Quarter of Naxxramas contains two of the raid's most storied fights in the form of Patchwerk and Thaddius. It additionally contains some of the raid's most storied trash in the form of the Frogger Hallway directly after Patchwerk. As Jennie says, if you want to experience the encounters unspoiled, don't read any further!

Trash in the beginning part of the quarter is pretty straightforward, although I should stress for the sake of limiting your repair costs that it's necessary to clear all of the trash (minus the Frogger hallway; more on this in a bit) in Patchwerk's room before aggroing him. Additionally, the slow-moving slimes in the circular room directly before Patchwerk don't have to be tanked, and can typically be AoE'd down in the chokepoint that their door creates. Once you've gotten all of the various disgusting things out of the way, it's time to sit at one end of the hallway and face --
PATCHWERK
An undisputed gear check, Patchwerk is a fight built on three elements: a). Tank mitigation, b). Competent DPS, and c). Hair-trigger healing. He's a tank-and-spank. There's no strategy, trick, or grand mystery to Patchwerk; you park yourself in the hallway and blast the living hell out of him until he's dead or you are. It's a short fight, the raid doesn't have to move at all, and if the fight is done correctly there is also no raid damage of any kind. It's for this reason that Patchwerk is typically cited as the ideal encounter for evaluating a DPS spec's maximum damage.

Boss abilities: Basic melee and Hateful Strike -- that's it. Hateful Strike is a nasty melee attack that Patchwerk attempts to use every second, targeting the highest-health player in melee range who is not the tank and within the top three (or, in Naxx-10, top two) of Patchwerk's threat list. Hateful Strike also increases the amount of threat held by the top three (or two) players on the threat list, so you don't want your melee to start DPSing Patchwerk before Hateful Strike is firmly on both offtanks.
Tanks: A main tank and at least one offtank are required, preferably two on heroic. Tank damage on the MT is high but steady. The offtank is there to absorb Hateful Strikes. Tanks' emergency buttons like Shield Wall, Barkskin, Icebound Fortitude, etc. should be saved for the last 5%, as Patchwerk gains an undispellable buff called Frenzy, and his damage and attack speed both increase substantially.
DPS: Your job is simple; unload. Try to time your cooldowns and trinkets to have them up as much as possible. If you have a Shaman, Heroism/Bloodlust timing is key. If your raid is still gearing up and not likely to kill him with much time to spare before Patchwerk's 6-minute enrage, use it as soon as the tanks have adequate threat, and then use it again as soon as it comes off cooldown. Hunters and moonkin will want Scorpid Sting and Insect Swarm respectively up at all times.
Healers: You should have at most three targets to heal on this. All damage done by Patchwerk is melee, so ask your mages to cast Amplify Magic on the tanks. More than anything else, the offtanks absolutely must be kept topped off as much as possible, or Hateful Strike will start to find targets among the melee DPS. Pre-healing is key. Hateful Strike can be parried and dodged, and it's not unusual to see tanks have both good and bad avoidance streaks. Don't let a good avoidance streak lull you into a false selse of security. In Naxx-25, a bad avoidance streak on the first offtank will usually lead to the second offtank soaking more Hatefuls, so be prepared to see that.
Patchwerk is fairly simple, but a number of guilds struggle on him at first due to high tank damage and the DPS requirement. He's a pretty good diagnostic tool for what portions of your raid need help. If you find yourself constantly losing melee DPS to Hateful Strike, that's a sign that your healers can't keep your offtanks reliably topped. Either they're undergeared, or your offtanks are. If you're hitting the enrage timer, your DPS needs to step up. Tank gear is obviously a huge part of this too. If your offtanks in particular are taking too much damage to be realistically healed through, you're better off avoiding Patchwerk for a while.
10-MAN vs. 25-MAN
No real difference barring increased damage and the recommendation for a second offtank on heroic. The achievement Make Quick Werk of Him is usually tougher on 10-man due to the inability to stack raids buffs on the level of a 25-man raid. 36,111 raid-wide DPS is required to kill him on heroic; on normal, you'll need 12,000.

Pity this didn't come two weeks earlier when my guild was really struggling on Patchwerk. Overall, great guide though.

I love patchwerk. It's a great hps/dps race. Amplify magic is also fun. I did a heal for over 22k on the tank on my last Heroic Naxx during patchwerk.

I'm not totally sure Hateful Strike adds threat to the top three on the meter. To my knowledge, it only adds to the person it hits. Unless healing is an issue, my guild tries to use only two tanks on Patch (25-man). Melee watches their threat and we don't have problems. From what I can recall, we've only had melee die by losing an off-tank or by ridiculously over-aggroing.

Re: Hateful Strike and threat
There is a running thread on the Elitist Jerks forum on Naxx and this question (the mechanics of Hateful Strike) came up. Other posters on EJ are saying that they have observed the multi-target threat increase. Here is the ref to the middle of the thread, where most of the discussion on Hateful Strike starts:
http://elitistjerks.com/f15/t31964-wotlk_naxxramas/p17/
The multi-target threat increase is important because it means that as the encounter goes along, it is harder for melee dps to "accidentally" pass the hateful strike tanks on the threat list and take an HS. A couple of later posters here talk about the slime dipping strategy and clicking off fortitude (this is also discussed in the EJ thread).
My guild used to do this too on both 10 and 25 and have since stopped the slime dipping the melee dps and removing fort). An extension of the slime dipping strategy is asking healers not to use any smart heal mechanics that will heal the melee dps (Prayer of Mending, Wild Growth, etc.). At this point, we've also stopped worrying about avoiding certain heals as well.

Looking forward to the next one. Our guild recently got Gluth down on our second attempt at him but i'd like to see what strats are brought up. We don't have the classes most strats suggest so we had to CC the zombies with two mages.
Thaddius however is pretty trivial with DBM tbh, maybe a pile of diagrams and maps on where and how to jump from platform to platform would be good though. Sadly my warlock summons are no good once in combat. ;)

this gear check for naxx is kinda of a joke if u can equip a blue lvl 80 item your good to go.
sosei Jan 11th 2009 5:11AM
Really? How many complete raid groups with *only* blues down Patchwerk in time? (Which brings about the question: How many raid groups try to raid Naxx only in blues?) And not a single purple among the whole raid, mind you. I'm not going to come out and say it's impossible, but I will say that it's highly unlikely, and very foolish...just as it's unlikely that *someone* in the raid group doesn't have an epic of some kind. So I'm calling bull on the 'if u can equip a blue lvl 80 item your good to go' claim.

Is there a reason Part 1 is Contructs?
rosencratz Jan 11th 2009 6:13AM
Ummmm.... because they've already done Plague, Military and Arachnid... just a guess...

This is actually Part 4 of the Naxxramas strategies. The other 3 were posted in early december.
Immacolata Jan 11th 2009 6:24AM
Tank him near the slime river and have your melee DPS jump in and out of the slime to stay at half health, that way the chance of him hateful striking someone other than the tanks is minimized.
Tridus Jan 11th 2009 6:33AM
That isn't necessary anymore, they changed it since 40 man Naxx so that the people getting hit by hatefuls get a threat boost. Even if both OTs are just about dead, anybody below third on the threat list won't eat a hateful strike, ever. The only way it happens is if they out threat an OT (low health won't save them), or an OT dies (in which case someone else is now third).
In fact I'd say its a bad idea. If an OT does die, its possible for a DPS to pop Evasion, Shield Wall, or Icebound Fortitude and maybe take a hit. If you're close to a kill the extra few seconds it buys can be the difference.
Tridus Jan 11th 2009 6:36AM
Healers (Holy Priests especially) often have a hard time on this fight because there's not a lot of chances for mana regen. But you can gear around it.
Holy Priests should be gearing for crit. Take the talents Surge of Light, Holy Concentration, Improved Holy Concentration, and Serendipdity. Once you get your crit built up, you'll get a lot of spells for no mana cost, which gives you a chance to go out of the five second rule. You can also pop Inner Focus after using a HC charge to get another free spell and stay out of the FSR longer. (If you use Inner Focus early, you can often get it back at the end of the fight too.)
Guardian Spirit is really useful during the frenzy.
Also, tell your raid leader that Replenishment is essential. It helps that it's true, you need a lot of mana to heal this and that's the best place to get it.
Cleer Jan 11th 2009 6:53AM
On patchwerk you shold have all the melee DPS remove their fortitude buffs, and then they should all stand in the green water, near where you pull him. This way the MT and OT should be much more likely to be hit with hateful strike.
The Claw Jan 11th 2009 7:17AM
The ONLY reason you should EVER consider having people take a slime bath is if you are trying to run 25-man with only one offtank, which is an advanced strat that you should only try if you're going for speed kills.
Guilds learning the fight should always have the proper number of offtanks (one in 10-man, two in 25-man) and therefore the health of the melee DPS is 100% irrelevant.
If you don't see this, it's because you don't understand how hateful strike works.
DeathPaladin Jan 11th 2009 8:46AM
Patchwerk is actually a very nice fight for a Holy Paladin. Give the main tank Bacon, and then focus on the off-tank(s) for the most part.
Agent StanSmith Jan 11th 2009 10:57AM
"The achievement Make Quick Werk of Him is usually tougher on 10-man due to the inability to stack raids buffs on the level of a 25-man raid."
I would say that the thing that makes the 10-man harder to get this achievement from is that it can only be done, as the tooltip linked in this very sentence suggests, in heroic mode.
Allison Robert Jan 11th 2009 2:29PM
http://www.wowhead.com/?achievement=1856
The achievement is completely identical (even down to the name) on the normal version -- kill Patchwerk in three minutes or less. So I figured it probably wasn't necessary to link twice.
Valhalla Jan 11th 2009 1:23PM
Something I learned the first time I did this as a Rogue: Wait about 4 or 5 seconds before running in. I made the mistake of running in with the tank, and he Hateful'd me and I died.
It happened to someone else on the 25 man version last night too. We managed to still get him down.
