Addon Spotlight: Friend & Ignore Share

A job for Friend & Ignore Share, to be specific. F&IS is a low-configuration, drop-in solution to my problem. After it's installed, your friends lists will automatically be synchronized between all your characters. Also, by default, your alts are all added to your friends lists for easier mailing auto-complete. Ignore lists are also synchronized, as the name suggests, although this is responsible for some "player not found" errors at log-in (players need to be online to be added to the ignore list).
It does have a few issues. First, the game puts a limit of 50 on the friends list; therefore, if you have more than 50 friends across your characters, you'll get an error. This is not really the mod's fault, but it is slightly irritating. Second, note-synching is not automatic. If you want to synch notes, you have to log into the character with the notes and do "/fs reset," and then do "/fs notes" on all the characters you want to import the notes to. Still, it's a relatively small price to pay for a big increase in convenience (for me, anyway).
Does anyone know of any better friends mods out there? My dream mod would do all that F&IS does, along with automatic note synching and no limit on the size of the friends list. If I could categorize friends too (tanks, healers, DPS), that would be ideal.

"Does anyone know of any better friends mods out there? "
It's not really for friends, but Badapples is pretty sweet. Helps you steer clear of people you do not want in your group for various reasons.

DoIKnowYou is a pretty useful complement to any friends-list-sharing mod. it allows you to give ratings and notes for names that are persistent across all alts on a server. the other nice feature of doiknowyou is to sync ratings with other members of your guild, so you can get a lot of feedback form just a name in the LFG channel as well...:)

FriendsWithBenefits, by tekkub.

His mods are bug free 99.99999% of the time.

I saw his, and I agree that his mods are all great at what they do. However, it doesn't work on the ignore list, nor does it do notes, as far as I can tell. That makes F&IS better for me.

Notes will be in the next build, I just added them this weekend.
Ignore sync will likely never happen because I don't really use the ignore list. "Report Spam" covers my needs, since it's really only goldspammers and gold beggars I block.

Great to hear that! I will definitely give it a try, then. I'm not a huge fan of F&IS's method of dealing with notes, and ignore is minor for me as well.

You might check out IgnoreMore for your ignore list. It expands the ignore list, auto-shares between your alts on that realm/faction, and lets you add notes (with an overloaded /ignore command to boot).

Auld Lang Syne is a nice friends addon - doing a /who shows the guild in the friends tab. There's a Fubar plugin that expands on mouseover and shows the notes you've made for friends (if any). It shows the number of people on the friends list and how many are on at a glance in x/y format. Does all of this for your guild too.

Has ALS been updated, then? I abandoned it sometime last month in favor of NotesUNeed, simply because it wasn't working with Wrath. I liked ALS better--NuN doesn't show the notes when you /who like ALS did.

I love Auld Lang Syne too. Have had no problems with it at all since Wrath. I love just being able to mouse-over a minimap button to see which of my friends and guild members are online ^_^
Sharing friends across characters was one feature I didn't even know it had until I went looking for a mod that did so, and was like "hey wait, this mod I'm already using does it already, I just never turned it on!"

I agree with Badapples. I personally use it and I have found nothing wrong with it at all.
Just my 2cents though, if anyone could state a better one, I would love to know it. =]
By the way, are there any other WoW Rogue bloggers alive that are daily posters?

I've never understood why Friends and Ignore lists are per-character. I can see some situations where you'd want that, but it seems like most of the time you would want it across all your characters, especially in a game which is intended to be social. Has Blizzard ever given a reason for this?
vexis58 Jan 11th 2009 7:44PM
Perhaps it's because on your alts, you might not be in the same guild, so you'd want to put your friends from your other guild on your friends list to know when they're online, but on your other character they're in your guild so they wouldn't need to be on your friends list.
But I agree, it's a pretty stupid system. That and the fact that there's an option to alert you when a guildmate logs in, but no such option for your friends list. What if I just want to have people on my friends list to keep track of who the good players are, not so I can be notified every single time they log in?

@Vexis:
I'm quite sure people on your friends list DO trigger a "Suchandsuch has logged in" message.

thanks for this! ive been making lots of alts lately and i used to have some mod that did this same thing but i forgot it. another great hit from wowinsider!

I use Tekkub's FriendsWithBenefits. Tekkub just seems to have a similar mindset to me, and his addons are always spot-on simple, but do just what you want them to do. TourGuide originally turned me on to him, and now I use his addons almost exclusively, save for Xperl, and other big-name addons.

Heh, I'd just want an addon that expands your ignore list

Try 'ignoremore'. I think curse gaming should have it. It's got one or two issues, such as some messages getting through now and then, but otherwise it's great.
As for ignoring people, if you annoy me enough for me to put you on ignore, I don't think I want to have anything to do with you in any other aspect either. Not grouping, not helping or anything else.
Part of the problem with this game's community is that there are no long term repercussions for being a jerk.
If Blizzard gave us 'ignore by account' and a longer ignore list, it might serve a bit towards improving the behavior of the majority of wow players.
Gareth Jan 12th 2009 7:12AM
Sadly I'm eager here to get improvements to my ignore list since I started an alliance alt up on a new realm. I've met some great people, but I'd also seen a lot more clueless jerks like the hunter who grouped with me for a quest and decide to need the first valuable item that dropped, because as he explained it "he needed the money".
Or the other group that strung me along, barely said a word because they were talking on vent and then silently logged off after I had turned down other requests to heal an instance....
A longer ignore list looks necessary, although a comment list for above timewaster groups would be good too, maybe I won't ignore them, but I will give them the priority they deserve in future.
