Sunday Morning Funnies: If you don't, the diabeetus will
It's another Sunday, and slowly, the absent comic artists are returning. I know some of you have been asking about Shakes and Fidget, as well as Ding!, and though Ding! is still on a bit of a hiatus, Shakes and Fidget has updated. Even Dark Legacy Comics and Disgraph are back at it!
- Echoes Through Time is the latest from Cru the Dwarf.
- It's nice to see artists dedicated to their work, even while on vacation. Pencil and Paper for the win!
- Experience Points shows us that even pros can make hunter pet errors. Especially when he's been hanging out on voice chat.
- Episode 10, part 5, of Flintlocke vs. The Horde is For the Birds.
- Shakes and Fidget has finally updated, with All Good Things Come From Above.
- GU Comics demands, Show Me the Funny. You definitely have to read the blurb underneath the comic, if you aren't in the habit of doing so.
- Check out the latest from LFG.
- Manic Graffiti presents Noobcow and Now We Hate You For Reals.
- NoObz is Too Cute.
- From The Adventures of Disgraph T. Dwarf comes Tuskarr Troubles. If you're a little confused, check out last week's notes.
- World of Warcraft, eh? presents, We're Thinning Out Their Numbers.

Not funny guys, Diabetes is not something to be made fun. I know you mean no ill will. I suffer from it as do many a great number of people are this world.
Sorry to be serious, but that disease is serious business.

Hey Milo thanks for the link, interesting video.
Sorry I just take it a little serious as I have lost several close family members to the disease and with myself having it, its a hot button issue.
Sincerely,
Ramos

I'm 33. I play wow. I was diagnosed with diabetes last year. Despite being a runner, eating well, and taking care of myself, I was diagnosed. It sucks. I have to worry every time I eat something, everytime I got out with friends, family, holidays, etc. I gotta fsking explain every time I can't eat something or have to limit what I eat. Everytime people from work want to go get snockered at a bar...#$%#. I have to take several expensive medications. I have to test my blood sugar levels 6 times a day. F$%^ing - A. This is in bad taste wowinsider. Why not just put some s$5#$ up that makes fun of aids or people getting killed in the middle east, or something. I'm sure some of that s$%@ would be hillarious too. Time and place. The Wilford Brimley is sorta funny, in a way. But if I had a site about WOW, you wouldn't see me putting "nigger" on a page just because there is some really, really extended but disconnected wow theme. Wrong time and place. You are not part of the diabetes "culture" or whatever. If this was a diabetes blog, right time/place maybe, and if it was explained even.
Milo Jan 11th 2009 9:40AM
This lolrus is making fun of the Liberty Medical ad starring Wilford Brimley that mispronounces diabetes.
Milo Jan 11th 2009 9:43AM
What offends you about making fun of ads that mispronounces diabetes. Wouldn't you want them to pronounce it correctly?
Moff Jan 11th 2009 10:21AM
This and everything else you see out on the web making fun of Wilford Brimley and the word "Diabeetus," has nothing to do with making fun of Diabetes and everything to do with making fun of Wilford Brimley's inability to correctly pronounce the word. I make fun of my Dad because he calls jeans "dungarees," usually while I'm wearing jeans, and never with the intention to make fun of pants made of denim.

i do agree with ramos96 and Scott, I think it was in poor taste. You wouldn't make fun of someones race or religion now a days. Why would you make fun a medical condition or the fact someone didn't use spell check. Sorry i just don't see the humor in it.

I'm not trying to downplay the disease (many on my father's side suffer from it), but it's just a 'lolcat' (or lolrus, to be more specific). Go to www.icanhascheezburger.com and take a look. WI wasn't trying to be in bad taste, it's just a pun on the expression 'So sweet it'll give you diabetes.' I'm sure no one meant to offend. =/

EVERYONE PLEASE TAKE NOTE:
Actor Wilford Brimley's mispronunciation of the word "Diabetes" in the ADA ad is parodied in Disgraph's current comic, the continuation of which is listed above. The line reference in Disgraph is below. This is not WI "making fun" of the disease, but rather referencing the parody of Wilford Brimley (who does resemble a walrus or Tuskar these days) that Disgraph referenced.

Though I understand his context, and am aware that he wasn't using it out of it, I'm still a little put off that the word Scott said in his post (the N word, and no not Nickelback, although that kinda gets to me too) isn't a censored word on this site?
Are there censored words here?
Shit, fuck, cock, cunt, pussywilliw
If those words (to give examples) can't be used here without crazy @#%*& characters, then why is that word allowed?
That is all....
Aeo Jan 11th 2009 2:23PM
Oh, I see those words aren't censored, color me chagrined.
Nothing to see here folks, move along...

LFG is artfully drawn, has a long-running story, and the author is consistent and prolific.
And seeming to follow in the comic BOOK tradition, as opposed to the comic STRIP tradition, I understand that an episode of LFG doesn't necessarily have to be able to stand on its own - or be funny or poignant - which, after the first few episodes, it definitely isn't.
But I've only ever seen the slightest evidence that LFG was even peripherally connected to WoW at all. It's as if the author took a few basic character concepts but otherwise created his own universe. So with every episode I don't know what the hell is going on and I don't care. Is it really a WoW comic ?
By far the most popular element of LFG seems to be Richard, and how loveably evil he is... though he doesn't seem to be around much anymore.
I would suggest Ding!'s Kissybear deserves Richard's place in the hearts of millions.
First of all, Kissybear inhabits the real WoW universe. Moreover, he's meta-fictionally aware of being a WoW game character, in a computer game, a member of a guild, interacting with real-sounding people and doing WoW things. I can (sadly) identify with this.
And even if Kissybear, too, is typical Horde scum (a cold-blooded genocidal murderer of Alliance innocents deserving nothing less than a just and vengeful execution and corpse-teabagging), he's just plain more fun. He's cruel, but in a lulz-y way - his enthusiasm for ganking is infectious - he takes real pride and joy in his work.
Richard, though, seems genuinely psychopathic, the alter-ego of a truly dangerous human being - the kind that would probably have multiple ASBOs in the UK - or raise death's-head moths and be a little too handy with a sewing machine - or pull the puppet strings of an entire administration from the shadows of a secure undisclosed location, occasionally shooting people in the face and getting away with it.
I would not invite Richard to the party.
I would invite Kissybear to the party and expect him to get bored and put his Held-in-the-Off-Hand item in the mashed potatoes.

You know, when I saw that this post had 18+ comments, I somehow thought I might be at the center of it....
Although I understand it was their choice to post it, please don't blame Amanda and the rest of the Wow Insider staff for my joke. If you have a problem with it, yell at me. I'm cool with it. Don't shoot the messenger.
For the record, the whole diabeetus joke is a shot at Wilford Brimley, not anyone with diabetes. And yes, my comparison of the Tuskarr to Brimley is based on the lolcats pictures above. I suppose I went a little far with the joke and see how it can be offensive to some. However, it was never meant to be offensive and is just a plot device to show the situation Disgraph is in, to kill the tuskarr or not. But I'm not picking fun at people with diabetes. I'm making fun of tuskarr and the myriad of comedic stereotypes that would fit with someone with a tuskarr's build.
Of course judging by the lack of outrage on my blog, I'm assuming people saw the headline and got angry, not actually reading my comic which was responsible for it and rather jumping to conclusions.
If you want to hate someone, please hate me and not Ms. Miller. She's just showing the funnies, not writing them.
Cadychan Jan 11th 2009 10:16PM
What are you talking about? I've been reading this blog for a long time and I've seen like, four. Joystiq has a ton, but, jeez...I'm sorry, but lighten up.
You wanna talk about something offensive? What does having red hair have to do with this? =/
