Breakfast Topic: Identity Crisis
Once upon a time, at the beginning of 2005, just a few months after WoW was released, The Spousal Unit made the switch and traded in his Dwarf Paladin for a Tauren Shaman and never looked back. He brought a couple other classes up to 70 and made lame attempts at duos with me, but Onnix the Shammy was the only character he really wanted to play. Then Wrath of the Lich King came out. He immediately took Onnix to Northrend and started questing. But he took a brief break to make a Death Knight, so that it could sit and get rest while he leveled his main. He decided to make an Orc because they look good in plate and we picked his name from a Celtic god of death (who ended up being a goddess). He didn't spend much time on the look and didn't care too much about the name because this was just a throwaway character.
Then he decided to burn through the initial quests. He had done some of them in the Beta and thought they were fun. Then he decided to see how fast he could get through Outland. And then, just like the comic above, he took him to Northrend. Next thing we knew, he had taken his DK to 80 before many of his guild's mains.
So, after being identified as Onnix in guild and vent for years, he was now Caillech. New guildies didn't know who to heal or assist in vent. And now his main is an Orc, when he really relates more to Tauren. He changed his name to Onniix, which at least eliminates the confusion during raids, but you can't change your race. Orc instead of Tauren, lame misspelling of name and a tank instead of healer -- he is going through a bit of an identity crisis.
With all of the Death Knights running around, I know there must be more of you going through similar identity issues. Is your main completely abandoned or have you been sharing time with your new favorite class? Or are you one of the few who refuse to even try the hero class?

I love LOVE the female tauren deathknight look. The white fur with frosty blue hair is a combo you can only have as a deathknight. I really wish I could have it for my Druid, but alas... no. DK only.
If it weren't for the blue fur, I'd have no reason to play a DK. :P
Ariel Jan 12th 2009 11:49AM
I totally agree! My DK is a female Tauren and when I saw that blue hair, it was love at first sight.
Ametrine Jan 12th 2009 3:46PM
My DK is a white-n-blue Frost-spec cow-girl, too.
(Breyers - as in the ice-cream, because what better for a combo of milk and cold?)

What's with the censoring of the word for female dog?
Next thing you know, the male decendant of that dog can also be named no longer, although it is the son of a ..... :D

I haven't even started a DK, dont think I will, I've never been one to follow the crowd.
Dwarf Paladin for me, has been since I started playing in original WoW. Picked Dwarf simply because there were fewer of them and humans are BORING!
Tigress74 Jan 12th 2009 8:46AM
You're following the crowd of people who believe they are better then everyone else by "not following the crowd"
Cyanea Jan 12th 2009 9:54AM
Agreed, although I did start one.
I've never been one for melee characters, really. I play a Paladin, but you're casting as much as you're in melee. The only "pure" melee character I have is a Rogue, but she's Subtlety and that's a whollllle different ballgame than playing say...a Warrior or Death Knight in terms of melee combat.

Paladins are the only class with a higher population than DKs at 80. So you're not exactly special.
Shiro Jan 12th 2009 8:34AM
Yep, despite having a Warrior, Shaman, Rogue, Paladin and Mage at level 70 when the expansion hit, my first choice was to level up that DK.
My biggest problem was that everyone was mis-specced for Northrend leveling, and I didn't feel like switching. My Warrior was Fury DPS, my Shaman was healing, my Rogue was specced Swords, my Paladin was Prot, and my mage was a Fire raid spec.
This meant that I felt like my warrior was gimped when I looked at prot warriors and the arms guys. My Shaman couldn't kill anything and wasn't getting enough XP in instances. My rogue was OK, but a bit undergeared for Stamina which meant that she was kind of squishy for Northrend. My Paladin couldn't kill anything as Prot, and my Mage got squished without the Frost leveling talents.
The killing blow was when I started leveling my DK in Outlands which I reasoned was just because Northrend was way too crowded.... Level 64 before Zangarmarsh? Level 68 before Nagrand? I managed to get to level 73 before I seriously started in Northrend (just did the starter quests in BT for the blue weapon).
Yeah, being overleveled for everything with an already beefy class is pretty darned sweet. At around level 74 I switched to a tanking spec and didn't notice much of a dropoff in my DPS so now I can do either in an instance depending on what the group needs.
I still find myself saying "I wish I was playing my resto shaman" a lot when we're looking for healers in groups though. There is a real lack of them right now which makes it very hard for me to swallow not leveling her next, even though I really, really would rather be playing my warrior. :)

"everyone was mis-specced for Northrend leveling"
and
"My rogue was specced swords"
Do you mean specced combat? Because that would be the best spec for leveling not the worst. If you mean he's specced hemo then I could understand, but even then at least you have some swords and a simple respec would turn ur rogue into a pve machine.
I leveled my rogue as sub daggers (the spec I love best), and I don't even have a decent sword to go combat if I wanted to.
I don't know if it was the most efficient way to level, but I really didn't care. I took me a week to level, and it would have been even faster if I took the week off like everyone else seemed to.
Shiro Jan 12th 2009 5:32PM
Yep, she's combat swords. I agree that in good circumstances it's an awesome leveling spec, but I got way too used to the "smack 'em in da face" style of play that I employed in instances. Her gear was sub-par and as a result it was like "smeck, smeck, smeck... Oh crud, he's got a friend" then the inevitable death/corpse walk.
For leveling I much prefer a more control based spec where I can take little damage, and have more escape moves. I'm a bit unusual in that way. :)
I just can't seem to get the hang of really going all out combat for leveling as a rogue.

I got a hate / love relation with Deadknights. I love my own DK, but the behavior of some DK's is just bad and as far as I can tell worse than the average toon behavior of other classes.
If you're grinding your main through a rough area and trying to solo every single mob there, not agroing to much to survive, there's a DK a few levels higher riding in to your area, not asking what you do, or if he can help, but just agroing your next mob, riding to the next 3, killing the first one, grabbing another at his shirt and draw it towards him and before you know he's off again, leaving you in an empty village and the only thing you can do is wait for a respawn. And hoping that the next DK isn't going to show up soon.
They not seem to care about other players in the same area. A mob is there to be dead and as fast as possible. Oh, others do quest too? Nah, I'm just passing through. I'll be gone in a second.
I know that rush when I'm on my new DK horse with overdrive. He's so fast, it gives you the feeling not only riding fast through the countryside, but also speeding through all quest as fast as possible. Never look back, there's a new horizon.
I love that.
And hate it...
So I'm trying to hold back with my DK.
Trying to look around who's also questing and ask if I can help.
Not grabbing mobs away infront of other ppl's nose, just for the next fast kill.
And I enjoy it more, because if there's one thing that I like about wow, it's playing with others together.
That's hard if you're just rushing through the content.
For what? To get to 80 and feel alone?
Or would it be better to get there together with some new friends?
And enjoy the journey together?
Zarfay Jan 12th 2009 8:40AM
All my toons have names starting with Z so when in doubt they just call me Z :)
ZUR13L Jan 12th 2009 9:49AM
lol
Ditto.
Panda Jan 12th 2009 3:54PM
All my toons are usually Adnapthe... with an element symbol. My main is Adnaptheau and my pally is AdnaptheK
luis Jan 12th 2009 8:47AM
bout my post... My pally name is aloth not sloth and he's a blood elf male
lsschwartz Jan 12th 2009 8:45AM
I had no issues at all. Got my main warrior and leveled her straight to 80. Got my 2 alts (priest and druid) and now have them at 77 and 75, made my DK and never played it, don't plan on doing it either. So nothing really changed for me, except my warrior went from fury to protection when the patch hit.
Soswos Jan 12th 2009 8:58AM
I Started lvling My alt Shammy after my main was lvl 80 but al the dks in outlands are starting to be a pain (in the ***):P
Darkharmony Jan 12th 2009 9:01AM
Yeah I'm having a similar identity problem. I came up with my name for my wow character and liked it so much I started using it for other games as well. Now that I have dropped my PVE warlock because I really hate the mechanics of it. And have been playing my DK ever since. It gets confusing because my friends know one name but my new guild know my new DK name. I've even had to make a new log in for Vent just so I don't confuse my original friends.
