Breakfast Topic: Identity Crisis
Once upon a time, at the beginning of 2005, just a few months after WoW was released, The Spousal Unit made the switch and traded in his Dwarf Paladin for a Tauren Shaman and never looked back. He brought a couple other classes up to 70 and made lame attempts at duos with me, but Onnix the Shammy was the only character he really wanted to play. Then Wrath of the Lich King came out. He immediately took Onnix to Northrend and started questing. But he took a brief break to make a Death Knight, so that it could sit and get rest while he leveled his main. He decided to make an Orc because they look good in plate and we picked his name from a Celtic god of death (who ended up being a goddess). He didn't spend much time on the look and didn't care too much about the name because this was just a throwaway character.
Then he decided to burn through the initial quests. He had done some of them in the Beta and thought they were fun. Then he decided to see how fast he could get through Outland. And then, just like the comic above, he took him to Northrend. Next thing we knew, he had taken his DK to 80 before many of his guild's mains.
So, after being identified as Onnix in guild and vent for years, he was now Caillech. New guildies didn't know who to heal or assist in vent. And now his main is an Orc, when he really relates more to Tauren. He changed his name to Onniix, which at least eliminates the confusion during raids, but you can't change your race. Orc instead of Tauren, lame misspelling of name and a tank instead of healer -- he is going through a bit of an identity crisis.
With all of the Death Knights running around, I know there must be more of you going through similar identity issues. Is your main completely abandoned or have you been sharing time with your new favorite class? Or are you one of the few who refuse to even try the hero class?

My Death Knight is my main. I promised that much back during the Ret debacle, when hotfixes were happening on a daily basis, announcing that I had enough of the drama surrounding Paladins. Replenishment is probably the only thing my group regrets losing with my switch.
I've felt bad about abandoning the character that's been my main since I started playing, and have tried to give him a second chance, but I can't really have fun as a Paladin anymore.
For me, the play style of Paladins and Death Knights are like action movies.
Paladin is the one that tries to produce an epic narrative, heartwarming love story, edge-of-your-seat suspense, etc, etc, almost to the point where you aren't really sure what kind of movie its director wanted to make.
Death Knight is the one that's two hours of fist fights and explosions. Sure, it's juvenile, but seriously, did you see that chopper explode? BOOM!

Sadly, I completely abandoned two level 70s (a warlock and a druid) to play my death knight.
Since the game's creation, I have always wanted to play a melee class, but I was never really turned on by paladins, warriors, or rogues. I didn't enjoy warrior or rogue at all (I could only get to level 30-ish with either of them). Paladins were okay (I got one to 48) but I wanted something that resembled the dark knight class of FFXI.
I thought that in Burning Crusade, they might give the Blood Elves a bit of a darker version of the paladin (with the name Blood Knight) that could do melee with some evil shadowy powers. But they didn't. They were just paladins. Sigh.
I was hooked on this death knight from quest number 1 and I have never looked back. Sure, I took the warlock and druid out to places like Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra in the beginning but when I thought of the fun I was having with my DK, that stopped. My DK just hit 80 this past Friday and I haven't thought about playing my other characters for two months now.
I think I am a Death Knight for life.

My mains a rogue, one of the most played classes in WOW. im not going to drop that class to pick up the NEW most played class in WOW. Its just not fun, you don't bring anything special when everyone and their mom has the same class as you.

had a prot war and resto druid at 70 before wrath came out. i was late on the wrath bandwagon so i decided to mess around a bit on a dk first... got him to 80 in grizzly hills. its been too much fun tearing stuff apart to go back
luckily theres a new wave of alt 70's in my guild that my prot war is leveling with.
alas my poor resto druid sits on his rest xp.

A mage was my first character to 70 and my main... I leveled a druid and warrior to 70, but when WOTLK came around I went back to my mage, got him to 80 and I am having too much fun to go back to the warrior or druid.
Onnix played a shaman, but after experiencing the DK it's obvious he likes the playstyle and "feel" of the class more.. grats on the new main.

Good comments this morning.....
My initital WoW main was a rogue...leveled to 60, got bored, took a break from WoW.
BC came out and I returned but was fond of the blood elves and paladin mix so I leveled a BE Pally to 70, got bored and quit.
WotLK came out and I returned. Had to make a death knight to see what its all about and I've barely played my Pally at all since returning.
I see a trend here.............

Being relatively new to Wow, I only had a main (mage) that hit 70 just a bit before wrath so it was a natural to keep going. Once I hit 80 the thought of starting at level 1 again was a bit much so I thought it might be fun to try the DK.
Turns out that although the starting part wasn't as big of a deal as I had heard about, the class is a lot of fun to play (its nice being able to actually take a hit and not have to sit and drink after every fight) and I am now working my way through the parts of Outland that I never did the first time through - fortunately there is more of Outland and Northrend than can be done questwise by a single char.
So my main sits at 80 doing a few dailies and the occasional raid while I have fun leveling my DK.
Now if I could just find a healer in Outland perhaps I could do a dungeon or two.........

I have noticed the lack of Locks also. I have a Gnome Lock that just hit 80 last night. Also have a Pally that hit 67 over the weekend. Played a DK through the opening storyline which was nice but haven't done anything since. DK is too much like my pally and since the DK started at 55 I never had any time to become attached to it.

My main was a hunter and as I switched servers I rolled a shaman. I don“t know, nut I like my hunter way better...
I've tried all specs and found myself healing for a while. Although I really liked healing, I have the constant feeling that, even with the healers shortage, people don't like resto shamans, but I think I'm too lazy to raise another healer from scratch.
Well, anyway, I have a problem of being a little obssessive and I always liked to grind reputations, raise professions and this kind of stuff, so I can' afford an alt for too long cause I don't have that much time to play :/
Not to count that the achievements system aren't helping my obssession hehehe.
Am I the only person who didn't like the starting DKs quests?

What didn't you like about them? I thought they were fun, not as big of a deal as I had heard about though. I remember someone saying they were the "single best hours of roleplaying I have ever experienced" which is a bit much imo.
I do have to say I was disappointed in the ending though, I won't give anything away so as not to spoil it, but i was expecting that I would be the one, not watching someone else

My 70s sit collecting dust while I play by 80 DK whenever I have time to spend in WoW. Most of my guild still calls me by my old main's name, which may cause some confusion to new folks.
I looked into name change as a solution, but the only way I can see to switch names between toons is to change the first one and then wait 90 days for the first name to become available again before changing the second name. It also looks like special characters are unavailable in name changes, preventing me from slapping an umlaut over a vowel.
Mark Jan 12th 2009 11:06AM
You can always try a 1 instead of a L. Fata1ity instead of Fatality for example...
Rosa Jan 12th 2009 11:06AM
I rerolled recently myself, prot paladin from balance druid.
I don't know, I miss some things about my druid sometimes, mainly hots and herbing in flight form, but I find my paladin a LOT more fun to play, and it's great always being able to get groups, especially since my best friend rerolled holy priest from frost mage with me. Whenever we want to run something it takes 2 minutes to get a group together and then we just go.
I haven't had any problems with naming, though. The people I play with are all people I know from other areas of my life, so while my druid was named Kelita and my paladin is named Hasten, they all just call me Rosa anyways.
Angus Jan 12th 2009 11:13AM
Level 70 shaman gathering dust.
Level 80 tankadin.
My vent name is still Angus...
Need to fix that.
Twowolves Jan 12th 2009 11:15AM
I'm grinding Timbermaw rep with my DK (Galloween the Diplomat will look cool...to me anyway) while my hunter, lock and mage chill out in Northrend. I may stay focused on her but usually I just switch every week or so. WotLK just came out so I don't feel the need to rush to 80 in any way, shape or form.
Thralroc Jan 12th 2009 11:24AM
First thing I did when I loaded WotLK on my 'puter was roll a DK named Blasfemii (rar to the name, I think.) I powered her through the DK starting area and loved the quests... but even back then I really thought the class was OP and thus started my dislike.
She's still sitting in Eastern Plaguelands at level 58.
Meanwhile, I've leveled my main, a hunter, to 80 and started running Naxx with her on the weekends. My warrior alt is pushing fairly fast toward 80 at level 77 1/2, and when the warrior is done I'm going to start on my level 30 druid.
Then, after that, maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe my DK will get some play.
Sl0th Jan 12th 2009 11:24AM
I don't have so many identity issues with my DK because I rolled him as an Orc while my main (Who I leveled to 80 first,) is Alliance. I'd already been working on a rogue on the Horde side, so I knew my way around the cities and such. Its been an interesting way to see the other half of the BC and Wrath content I hadn't gotten to see as yet.
Lemons Jan 12th 2009 11:55AM
I pretty much refuse to make a Death Knight. I hate them with a burning passion that will not die. They're so OP right now and I'm not one to do the flavor of the month thing. and retard can death grip > IBF > Bone armor > and then laugh as the other class struggles to kill them. They disgust me. They were the last class to be designed and thus they are the class best suited to take on all comers.
I'll just stick with my rogue. Sure we're dinosaurs atm, but the rogue is the class that I love and I'm never going to switch.
RedMosquito Jan 12th 2009 12:01PM
I play both Horde and Alliance on the same server, and I changed mains on both sides. From Mage to Hunter on one (even though the Mage class is still my favorite, and now that my Hunter is 80 I'm playing my Mage again) and from Rogue to DK on the other (just because I had so much fun levelling my DK, and it was so fast, while my Rogue took a much higher amount of effort). I still love all four characters, though, and plan on playing all of them at 80.
