Well, you can only help but so much. We started helping as much as we could. Answered questions, gave advice, ran instances to get good gear...then it turned into, I have no gold, can I have this and that, and then when that didn't work, into a pity fest of "I suck, I might as well delete my character." and "this is too hard I'm going to quit." and basically hand-holding. Despite everything we tried to do, its ultimately up the person behind the character. It's even harder when the person is an awesome RL friend, just a sucky wow player. :)
