Email realm status alerts

Enter wowrealmstatus.net. It's a simple service: it sends you one email when your realm is brought up. (It can also be set to send you an email when your realm is brought down, or when its load is low, medium, or high, but I have yet to find a use for this functionality.) Enter your email, pick your realm from the menu, click the "Alert Me" button, and you're done. It only ever sends the one email; if you want another alert in the future, just set it up again then. Simple, effective, not annoying: a great web tool.
And if you didn't know already, your mobile phone almost certainly has an email address which translates to text messages (AT&T phones, for instance, are [phone number]@mobile.att.net, like 123456789@mobile.att.net), so you can get alerts that way too, though your carrier will bill you for it if you don't have a text plan.

Alternately, Firefox has a "Realm Status Tool" you can use to find out which realms are up or down.
That was how I found they were up early today

I use this as well. Pops up a little notification box, even when it hits a high population so you know to log in before it hits full and you have a queue.

I was just going to post this. Last I checked, it was listed as outdated (although this may be wrong, I've been running nightlies for so long I often forget there *is* a stable Firefox/bird/Pheonix), but you can use Nightly Tester Tools to override that. Don't worry about issues: it's a simple plugin that can't screw up the browser at large.

The site in question seems to deal with Gold selling, so I'm not sure how much you want to promote it.
There's a Yahoo Widget I like for realm status checking. It can hover on your desktop at 50% transparency, and track as many realms as you like.

I use the desktop widget that can be used by Vista people. There should also be one for mac's.
The downside to this though is it doesn't work with my Univ.'s firewall.

Put that into your Bookmarks Toolbar. Click it any time after 12.30EST It's not that hard, and you don't have to give your email address to suspicious websites. If you feel the need to check realm status when you're not close enough to your computer to do it that way, seek help immediately.

The service interests me as well (take off to run errands, let it email me on my mobile when the realms are up)... but as has been said, there's too many shady ads on that site for me to want to put in my information.

If it seems suspicious to you then make a new Gmail address and use it specifically for wowrealmstatus.net. Stop being so scared.
Also, if you play your life around whether or not your realm is up, WoW might be taking a grip on your life and you should probably step back a bit.

Personally, I use a Google gadget that lets me know realm status.

Just adding to the list of other possible Realm Alert programs... Here's one for the Mac users out there:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/games/wowserverstatus.html
A simple dashboard widget that reports the status of whatever US or EU server you specify...

Even if you use a 'spam' email address won't you still get a virus or keylogger? Maybe I don't understand how these sites work, but if it looks shady, I am not putting information in, nor sticking around long enough for some script to run.

FAIL
It's [phone number]@txt.att.net or 0123456789@txt.att.net
Just FYI mate

I'd be very very careful about using your registered email for a site like this. It sounds like an attempt to get some registered emails to begin the hacking process.....

I wish Blizzard had something like this themselves. I'm not giving any of my real e-mails to a random website, and I'm not going to make a special e-mail just for this service. It's a great idea, other than the security risk.

Eliah: Does the example image you provided above mean that you play on Shadow Council? I spent the vast majority of my first year of gameplay over there.
Eliah Hecht Jan 16th 2009 1:01AM
Yes sir, ShC is my server.

Also noteworthy, and (apparently) relatively new: http://www.realmwatcher.com -- same idea I gather, but with persistent email alerts. Create an account, define alerts for the servers you want monitored, and tailor the alert criteria. If you're too skittish to use your email to create an account, they also offers realm status RSS feeds, fwiw.
