Ghostcrawler talks a bit about Resilience

In the current Arena setting, it's all about burst damage, with matches lasting nowhere near as long as they used to back before Wrath of the Lich King. Ghostcrawler pops over the forums to talk a little about Resilience and how Blizzard feels that it still makes, or will make, a difference. He explains that the reason so many players are wearing PvE gear to PvP is because its readily available, going so far as to call Naxxramas gear the new welfare epics. He says that as more players get Resilience, other players will have to keep pace.
That might take some time. Like I mentioned, even with a complete set of Deadly Gladiator gear and non-set items, it's going to be impossible to hit the Resilience cap. Resilience makes very little impact in PvP encounters right now that the risk to using PvE gear over PvP gear is minimal. Hitting 600-700 Resilience is very possible with a decent complement of PvP gear, but this only reduces damage from crits by about 17% at best. Resilience in its current design does nothing to reduce normal, or non-crit damage. Until more Resilience shows up in PvP gear or its coefficients or ratios changed, the trend of using a lot of PvE gear will probably continue throughout Season 5.

This seems far too much of a band-aid approach from Blizzard then a sustaining solution. On the one hand, its become very easy to jump into PvP with PvE gear to its over saturation to players. However, this can be attributed to Blizzard failing to put in suitable PvP gear in preparation to Arena Season 5 starting. The crafted blue item sets did not even come close to cutting it. We should have been able to get the gear before the season started, plain and simple.
Aside from relying on resilience, Blizzard should look to using the dual specs as a way to approach PvP and revitalize it. Sort of in a way that allows for fair and balanced PvP play on all facets. While suggesting that some sort of PvP spec, action bar, gear set is automatically assigned and equipped to you when you enter arena, BGs or Wintergrasp may seem a little extreme... its an idea that opens up some possibilities to better balance PvP and make it fun again.
Here's the problem Blizzard is doing, they want PvP and PvE to be hand in hand as far as progression and gearing when what they should be looking at is two separate but equal entities that should be able to co-exist. Even if it means creating two different sets of talent trees(sounds big but in the long run might be a palpable way of saving PvP) to go with PvP then so be it. This would give the dual spec a way to be balanced so that PvE and PvP could be brought to a better mainstream of players, not just hardcores.
What I'm trying to say is that Blizzard put to even of a curve for PvE and too steep of a curve to PvP. They want this to be hand in hand but its the type of hand in hand thats between a big brother and a little brother.

I mostly agree with you in everything, except that I don't see the need for automatically switching specs and gear. You have to wait for the portal for WG, you have queues for BGs and Arena, so that's when you can switch to your PvP set. If you don't... well, it's your fault.

I still think the best and only way to make arena fair is to have a special arena gear system. There would be an interface with all the possible gear, enchantments, and gems allowed in arena. You would customize 1 or many sets of gear that are saved. When you entered the arena you would get a pop up asking you to select which set of gear you wanted to use and then that set would be equipped. This gear would not be in your inventory it is just usable when you enter the arena.
You would still get arena/honor points that you could use to buy gear that is usable outside the arena. This just gives everyone equal footing.

PvP gear by definition should be superior to PvE gear when you're PvP'ing.
Once again, Blizzard shows how badly they fail at something that should seem blatantly obvious.
hpavc Jan 14th 2009 10:07PM
Agreed, they failed at PvP gear this time for sure.
Max Jan 15th 2009 2:36AM
Would you rather have it like BC, where scrubs could just skip heroics and farm honor for gear that was better for PvE?
no, this is much much better

Last time around it was PvP gear for PvE, now it's PvE gear for PvP.
When I put on my PvP gear in the Arenas, I'm giving up my only real shot at winning - killing the other guy before he gets close enough to kill me in a couple of GCDs. I'm trading almost 1000 AP and 3-5% crit for 350-odd resilience and about 500 HP. I'm talking, here, about Hateful gear, because (yes) I'm bad at Arenas.
PvP gear needs *heavy* survivability stats and poor DPS stats, and the other way around for PvE. Trimming out 15-20% of the DPS and giving back 5-10% survivability is clearly not doing the job. If a Rogue can kill me in 3 GCDs whether or not I'm wearing PvP gear, there's no choice - put on the PvE gear and hope you get his healer down first.

@Max: Not saying that PvP gear should be better, but it should be almost as good as heroics (well, now we have the Deadly sets, which should be like the 25 man hard raids -- whatever they are.)
Thing is, some people really really REALLY hate raids and dungeons. For some reason, after a small dungeon, I get really claustrophobic and the first thing I need to do after finishing something is get my flyer and go away from that. If people says "hey, let's do it again", I'm pretty close to get off my chair, go to their houses and murder someone. I never feel like this when doing BGs (probably 'cause BGs are open spaces.)

I agree, the balance gap between Season 5 and Tier 7 equivalent PvE gear is stupidly big. Many perfer PvE epics because its much easier to 3 shot people with it (I have been 3 shotted before in Arena)
I think burst damage needs to be toned down quite a bit to be honest.
Splinta Jan 14th 2009 9:21PM
Its a sad truth but yes, PvP gear right now is a bit silly to have IF you are doing the "high end" raids and can get the teir gear but if you are like me and not a huge fan Naxx etc then at lest having the Savage/Hateful gear over heroics/Naxx10 is nice.
It could be just in my head however but my 564 res that I got right now I feel makes a difference, even tho its just 13% or whatever.
Then again im Resto ;p

Guys, doesn't this situation sound a little familiar?
Season 1: January 30, 2007 to June 19, 2007.
Season 1 arena gear was clearly lacking in the arenas, in comparison to PvE gear from the instances that were unlocked at the time.
Seriously, stop QQ'ing about this slight delay in good PvP gear. You obviously have kept interest (and your game subscriptions) in hopes that the situation will be remedied "soon". Don't get your panties in a bunch, it doesn't help your cause.
Things will improve. Have faith. This gear should not be treated like stepping into a "Season 5" of BC gear, but a "Season 1" of WOTLK gear. Over time, things will balance out.
Lemons Jan 14th 2009 9:47PM
Exactly..if the situation happened in the past you'd think Blizz would be fast to avoid it in the future...
But...apparently not. I think I should work for Blizz, I'll be their "WoW Historian." Then I could warn them when they're about to fail in the exact same way they did 2 years ago..
Lemons Jan 14th 2009 9:44PM
There is a brutal inconsistency between pve and pvp gear atm. Even with all the resil I have I can still easily get bursted down by someone with a decent amount of pve epics.
If I decided to socket/enchant for resil I wouldn't have the power to be an effective damage dealing class, sure I'd live longer, but only to see the healer /dancing as his hots alone heal his partner through my minimal damage.
The overall idea of resil isn't a bad one, but what we need at this point is more of it. They should simply patch in more resil on all the savage/hateful/deadly gear. I don't want to have to wait until season 8 to start noticing the value of resil again.
Julio Biason Jan 15th 2009 1:32AM
I pointed that before (but I guess my post will be thrown into oblivion), but I think Resilience should mean "reduced damage from players in the other faction", not just "reduced DoT" as it is right now.
When you look at arenas today, there is no more DoT. It just bursting into victory. Resilience wouldn't reduce the burst damage, so it pretty much means nothing.
Darkfall Jan 14th 2009 9:48PM
Doesnt matter what Blizzard does. Darkfall comes out next week and everyone can enjoy REAL pvp and blizzard can shove their resilience up their murloc bungholes.
Amaxe Jan 14th 2009 10:01PM
Good, maybe we'll see the gankers all go over there
Ahoni Jan 14th 2009 11:21PM
I thought all the PvPers left for Warhammer last fall?
/confused
