The Queue: Wrap me up, baby
Welcome back to The Queue, WoW Insider's daily Q&A column where the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. In the comments of yesterday's edition of The Queue, Gilgamesh mentioned that you're actually able to attack the projection of Mr. Bigglesworth in Wintergarde Keep, or at least, you could for a long time. It's inspired me to... tell a little story.
Once upon a time, The Queue was Ask a Beta Tester. We were still in the midst of exploring Northrend before every Joe and Jane could waltz in there, and I was a puny level 71 traipsing all over the world and taking in its beauty. Ohh! Dragons! Ooo! Yetis! Oh look, hehe, there's a kitty on the projector! Let's click on it!
Oh no! Oh nooo! It's attacking me! Oh gosh, it's just a critter, I can just 1-shot it. Unfortunately for me, it was level 80, and I was a level 71 caster. It resisted absolutely everything. I ran around Wintergarde flailing my arms in horrified desperation, hoping and praying it would leash and leave me be. Unfortunately, it did not, but I had healing spells and managed to weather its furious paws until my Prot Paladin friend showed up to tank it for me. Not my proudest moment, that's for sure.
Kyle asked...
What is the gear progression for someone just leveling to 60 for the first time. Are the early tiers still viable? Or have they all been rendered moot by the expansions?
Should I rely on quest reward gear until I'm able to raid Naxx or should get the earlier tiers along the way?
You absolutely do not need to worry about tier gear before level 80. It's all been made moot and obsolete by the expansions, like you said. If you really want to get that gear, it's available, but the effort isn't worth the reward. You can use quest gear straight to level 80.
I highly recommend doing some dungeons between level 70 and 80, though. If you've never done any dungeons at all on the way to 80, leaping straight into Naxx is not recommended. You'll want to get a little bit of gear first. Naxx is pretty simple nowadays, but not so easy that you want to go in without any gear or experience at all.
taintedverse asked...
Does Blizzard have any plans to expand the "RP Clothes" portion of the game? More low level armor/weapon/fluff models for us RPers to use. What's your opinion on the subject?
Well, we certainly don't know what goes on in Blizzard's head, so I don't know what they plan on adding in the future. They're adding stuff all of the time, though. There's already a huge, huge variety of armor of various levels that you can mix and match to fit your character's style/personality, and they add vanity items pretty often, too. Not a ton of them, but it's there.
My favorite recent addition is the Wound Dressing and Antiseptic-Soaked Dressing from Dalaran, that were added in Wrath. It's perfect for the 'oh noes I'm injured' RP that we've all had at least once, and typically far more often than that. There are a ton of RP props out there as far as items go, and they add more all of the time. You just need to look for them. PvE items certainly aren't banned from being used in RP.
Mark asked...
Recently I saw an astonishing message come up: "Dalaran is under attack." How is that possible? It's a sanctuary, you can't attack anyone/guards even if you wanted to, right?
It's possible to sneak into the opposite factions' sides of Dalaran, and both factions have a single NPC you can kill in the area you use to queue up for Battlegrounds. The Horde Warbringer and the Alliance Brigadier General are still flagged for PvP, and the hidden Sanctuary buff doesn't protect them. As long as they don't get too close to the fellas that'll portal them out of there, they can kill the guy over and over without any repercussions. Kind of annoying, and I fear I've doomed every server in the world to it happening endlessly now that I've mentioned it here.
I apologize in advance.

Shadow (DPS) needs Hit on gear. Holy (Healing) does not, at all, not even a little bit. NO HIT EVER... Unless you plan to lolsmite, leave the hit cloth gear to the SPriests, 'Locks, and Mages.
Chris Anthony Jan 15th 2009 12:43PM
/sigh
"Holy (Healing) does not, at all, not even a little bit. NO HIT EVER..."
This is a lie. It sounds like it ought to be true, but it is not.
ALL priest crowd control depends on spell hit. +hit on gear is the difference between Mind Control succeeding and allowing your group the buff that the mob can give vs. Mind Control failing and pulling the entire group of mobs onto the priest; it's the difference between Shackle Undead successfully crowd-controlling an undead mob vs. Shackle Undead failing and letting that mob get to the tank's AOE damage (in the *best* case scenario). And all of the priest's crowd control has a heartbeat resist, where +hit reduces the mob's chance to resist.
This is not to say that Holy priests should stack +hit. They should take Spirit, Intellect, Haste, Crit, and Stamina before they take +hit gear. But it's a lie to say that they don't need it at all.

YAY! The Queue! i love reading these. i always have a question but i forget it once this comes up, lol.
Elridan Jan 14th 2009 4:26PM
I've tried to get into the other factions area...but every time i do i get ported out.
Is there a specific way you have to sneak in? Even as a Belf rogue I find my stealthy skills lacking against the Eye of Dalaran-I can't get 5 feet inside the alliance safety place before getting ported and stunned.
Angelofwar Jan 14th 2009 4:30PM
You can fly in. As long as you land far enough inside it appears the port does not happen and you can walk around in certain area's without being ported.
I haven't tried trying to get to the NPC's mentioned in the article, but I imagine it wouldn't be too hard if you know where to go on an epic flyer.

Fly in - Parachute into PVP area - Kill

As Horde I have gotten to the balcony on Ally side and dance in the flowers there, but never anywhere else. I tried to jump right in the middle of the courtyard with all the ports but each time met with angry angry teleport.
So I'm not quite sure how to hit the General yet but I'll keep exploring for sure... and /yell "I'm dancing in your flowers allys!" and variations of.

So if your on an RP server it's:
*Equips Wound Dressing*
"Egads, good Ferawier! That last beast we dispatched wounded me mortally, thoust must take me back to town for I require aid most dire!"
On a normal server it's:
"Dude, I'm gunna put u on follo while I go make me a sammich"
Phil Jan 14th 2009 4:44PM
Thank you for making me laugh uncontrollably
Sean Riley Jan 14th 2009 4:56PM
... thoust must?
Dude. Thoust must?
AyaJulia Jan 14th 2009 5:17PM
@Sean: What can you really expect from someone who mixes up your/you're? What grade do they teach that in these days, fourth?
Shrike Jan 14th 2009 7:07PM
I still find it amusing that people who don't RP always assume everyone who RPs uses archaic speech patterns, and often gives an example using them incorrectly.
Most RPers in WoW do NOT use archaic speech patterns, because the NPCs in WoW don't, either. RPers speak in-character in the same kinds of ways the NPCs do.
If Thrall says, "It's good to see you, warrior! Lok'tar ogar!" why would a Horde character say something silly, like "Forsooth, it be good to see thou"?
To sound a bit more cultured while RPing, the simplest fix is: don't use contractions. E.g. "It is a fine day" sounds more cultured than "It's nice out".
Lemons Jan 14th 2009 7:28PM
@AyaJulia
In which grade do they teach you to be the grammar police?
Oh wait...
Vindictive morons develop that skill naturally..

Remember how when Wrath was just announced, and Blizzard was talking about the different zones, and mentioned how Azjol'Nerub would be an entire underground zone? Well, obviously, those plans fell through and they decided to just make it into two instances.
My question is, though, do you think they're gonna do a little more work on Azjol'Nerub? Maybe make some more extensive instances, maybe some raids, or maybe even an full zone sometime in the future.
Lore-wise, the whole zone is huge and stretches all across Northrend, and has and extensive story to it that Blizzard could explore, and the two instances of the area that are in the game are very small, in my opinion, and barely scratch the tip of what could be done with it.
Actually, I think it could have potential for being the starting zone for the nerubians should they become a playable race sometime, which I think might be pretty cool. The zone itself could have a bunch of lore in it between the Faceless Ones, the Scourge, the surviving nerubians, which you're a part of, and maybe even some of the dwarvish explorers, maybe even relating for Anub'arak now that he's been freed from Arthas' grip.
Speaking of which, another question is, what do you think they'll do with Anub'Arak. They mentioned they're going to use him for more player interaction outside of raiding, so since we've barely done much with him so far, what do you think they'll be doing with him, if they are at all?
Kvothe Jan 14th 2009 4:49PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't players KILL Anub'Arak? I mean, you have a quest called "Death to the Traitor King" that specifically tells you to kill him, not free him from the Lich King's grasp.
tonedeff Jan 14th 2009 4:46PM
I sudenly feel the need to go kill something horde in dalaran!
erogroth Jan 14th 2009 4:51PM
I am reposting this question in today's queue cause I posted it like 5 mins before this edition came out and I am not sure if anyone would see it. So here it is:
Is there any word on Iron Boot Flask in patch 3.0.8? Is it going from a cost of 10 Relics of Ulduar to 250 still? And if so are the Relics going to be BOE or BOP?
I assumed that since it was going to be raised to 250 Relics they changed them to BOE but after the article I read on wowinsider the other day about that possibly not happening I don't know what to think.
I am level 80 but I have just barely got into Icecrown and have not even touched Storm Peaks yet. I don't know if I should hurry up and grab my Iron Boot Flask now or if I have time to just play through the content at a casual pace.
Haarits Jan 14th 2009 5:04PM
Buy it now. Why wait? Fly over to Storm Peaks, kill about 20 Iron Dwarves, Valkyrion Aspirants (or whatever they're called, the blue ladies around the blighted pool), or just about anything else in the zone, and you'll probably have 10 Relics already. Buy Iron Boot Flask, return to Icecrown questing.
erogroth Jan 14th 2009 6:00PM
You have a good point but I am still curious about the Relics. Are they gonna be BoP or BoE? And if the cost of the Flask is gonna go up I may want to get it for some alts as well.
AyaJulia Jan 14th 2009 6:46PM
They said the cost would increase. They haven't said anything to the contrary since, therefore that part of your question should be pretty clear.
The only interesting thing here is whether they'll be BoP, and I'm sure if WI had any new information on that it would be front page new by now. :) No one really knows, beyond GC's last hint that they might stay BoP.
