WoW Moviewatch: The Lament of Captain Placeholder
Depending on how long you've been playing World of Warcraft, and which faction you play, the subject of The Lament of Captain Placeholder will require either no explanation, or a lot of explanation. I'll sum up. Back in the days of yore, the boats of Menethil Harbor were tricksy things. As you rode them into the distance, the boats could suddenly disappear out from under you. Stranded in murky waters, you were unable to swim to safety before Fatigue overwhelmed you, and you drowned. This was, obviously, a pretty rough state of affairs. The solution was Captain Placeholder, a man of such fame and skill that people still miss him. While Blizzard repaired the boats, Captain Placeholder simply teleported you across the ocean for free.
Eledainn of Graystar long ago penned the words to "The Lament of Captain Placeholder." Now, Cranius has taken it a step further and created a music and video to commemorate the good Captain.
I was floored by this piece. The music is absolutely fantastic. I was impressed by not only the music's composition, but the talent and skill of the singer. The tone and singing style do a lot to bring about a proper WoW feel. The video itself is perfect for the song and soundtrack. The footage is there to provide visual counterpoints and compliments to the music, and that's exactly what it does. With a piece like this, you really want your audience focused on the sound, anyway. I think the transitioning credits did a great job complimenting the style of the song, giving the entire piece an effective classic feel.

I miss Captain Placeholder. I was hoping he'd be captaining one of the boats to Northrend personally.

Wow, definitely one of the better machinimas I've seen as far as the music is concerned. Usually they involve some tone-deaf kid with basement accoustics.

I know the MP3 has been around for years. The video suits it perfectly.

@blacksword
The video's been around forever as well. Regardless of the writer just finding it after all these years, it's still a good video =3

Oxhorn was in it? Hmm.

I was thinking the exact same thing. ^^

Yeah, the song has been around for years, but the video is really good too.

I preferred the permadancing Captain Eo. It worked on so many levels.

I call shenanigans... There's a sad Draenei on the pier in that video. The Draenei weren't in Azeroth at the same time as Captain Placeholder. How can she possibly miss him??
kalatash Jan 14th 2009 12:39PM
Her friends/guild mates told her about him, so even she misses him.
Arashikou Jan 14th 2009 4:28PM
Nonsense! Two years ago, the Draenei opening clearly stated that a year ago the Draenei crash-landed, which means that half a year after that was... wait, no...
...dammit, I can't keep all these retcons straight! But I'm quite sure the Draenei were there all along, we just overlooked them all for years until we'd been 60 for quite some time. Just as Sylvanas always looked like she does today; it was just our racist preconceptions that caused us to mentally lump her in with first the Night Elves and then the Blood Elves.
So of course this poor Draenei would have known Captain Placeholder. Probably even a close confidante of his, her soul torn to shreds now by his sudden disappearance without so much as a word to her, her dreams forever haunted by memories of his brisk, faithful service, never wavering for a day.

great video
its really amazing how high-quality audio can create an atmosphere with such ease for the viewer
very very well done!

To be clear, the music and words were both written by Eledainn. Cranius performed it again, adding the mandolin part. It's a wonderful rendition, really well-performed, and Cranius deserves full props for a moving performance.
But Eledainn deserves full credit for writing the thing in the first place.

@graagh - well to be honest he deserves a condemnation for stealing the chord sequences off Pachelbel's Canon (for the intro) and Puff the Magic Dragon for the main song.
It's nicely played and sung though.
