Breakfast Topic: Who will dual specs benefit most?

By contrast, most of the hybrids to whom I've spoken see dual specs -- not as a competitive advantage, but rather as relief from the financial drain of constant respecs. 50g may not seem like a lot of money in Wrath's economy, but it adds up, to the point where you realize that the two hours you spent doing dailies will only net you about 20g after, say, respeccing to heal a heroic and then respeccing back to tank or DPS for the night's raid. Thus hybrids are equally resentful about the demands made on their time and e-wallet that pure classes don't have to worry about.
The end result seems to be that players talk through each other. Hybrids are focused on saving gold. Pures are concerned that their class is just not desirable enough in the absence of truly superior damage. Hybrids chafe under the cost of building multiple PvE gear sets to do a raid or group's most stressful jobs. Pures twiddle their thumbs on the sidelines in the knowledge that, once a group or raid's DPS slots fill up, they will be sat in favor of a worse player who can respec to do a needed job.
In the end I think pure classes, oddly enough, have the most to gain from the dual-spec system. Dual specs will allow pure DPS to maintain PvE and PvP specs without having to pay to shift between two sides of the game. And while I think many PvP-oriented hybrids will do the same, there is a very strong financial incentive for hybrids to dual-spec for the most requested PvE roles (tanking and healing), which will increase the supply of players available and willing to do these jobs in groups and raids. This is pretty much a win-win scenario for a pure class. The effect on hybrids, while still very positive, is going to be tempered by the fact that PvP specs (or possibly soloing specs) would remain an additional expense on top of the usual need to build, gem, and enchant multiple PvE sets.
Personally I intend to run with PvE tanking and resto builds once dual specs go live as these are (by far) the most requested roles of my main, but I'm curious to see what attitude players are going to bring to the new system.
*For the purpose of this discussion I should note that pure classes = Hunters, Mages, Warlocks, and Rogues. All other classes can all spec into at least two different roles for PvE.

I welcome the dual spec system.
Sometimes as a hunter you'd like to be MM over BM, just to change it up.
Also, as long as you keep doing good dps, who cares if that shamman can do it and heal? If the raid goes well, then the shammy will stay ele/enh.

"Hey look! That guy ran off and left his totem!"
"Really? Sweet! Grab it!"
"Don't you think he'll be mad?"
"Who?"
"Crap, I forgot his name already"
"LOL"

Have they mentioned how will buffs work with this system?
Could a pally buff Kings and then switch to a different spec without Kings? Will the buff be removed?

I like the idea of dual-spec. But also think its a ploy to give more gold to the million people that dumped their profession to get inscription. Or at least give them something else to sell besides vellum.

@Michael
Not really, if they implement it the way they said they would:
"[Ghostcrawler] also makes mention of things we already knew. They are aiming to allow people to swap glyphs and action bars with the dual spec feature, and that it should be along ideally in the next major content patch."

So really, you'd just have to buy a second set of glyphs, not buy them over and over as you imply.

The new flexibility wrath gives is amazing. Spellpower+dual-specs means i can easily switch between healer and DPS without having a full bag dedicated to random bits of armor i picked up questing in case someone really, really needs me to run some random dungeon casting chain heal instead of lightning bolt.
Pures shouldn't worry so much. Mostly DPS-based hybrids aren't used for straight damage, but enhancing the damage of pures. Enhancement shamans aren't invited into raids for their windfury weapon, it's for their windfury TOTEM.

I must agree. I am planning to dual spec my Druid to Balance and Resto, because with the combination of +Healing and +Spell Damage into +Spell Power it means I won't really need to swap gear between specs.
Not sure yet if I will Dual spec my Ret Pally to Holy or Prot yet, I guess that really depends on what the people I normally run with spec too.

I knew it. You only love me for my totem! You bastard! *runs off crying* I'll never love again!

Moonkin and Tree will still require different sets of gear. They both need +SP, but the Moonkin build will need +hit, and the Tree will need +Spirit. Otherwise, you're going to have a sub-optimum moonkin or tree - and we can do that now without dual specs.

I wish they wouldn't limit this to two specs. Both of mine will have to be PvE tanking builds. One for max threat and one for max survivability. It will improve my PvE performance, so it doesn't really make any sense to do anything else. Not using both specs for my primary role is just as irresponsible as not bringing consumables, or not enchanting/gemming my gear appropriately. This wouldn't just apply to tanking. I'd expect that everyone I raid with reserve both specs for their primary role (unless we ask them to spec for two PvE roles). Every spec has talent choices that were tradeoffs. Having two specs means that different tradeoffs can be chosen to adapt to a given encounter.
Honestly at this point, why not just allow dynamic reassignment of talent points while out of combat (perhaps requiring at least a minute out of combat before reassignment is allowed to prevent arena issues)? Let the two talent specs just be a toggle between two or more prefered specs/glyphs/ui layouts. This wouldn't just be more powerful, it would be more fun. Who wouldn't love the chance to play around with the niche talents that are only applicable to very specific situations? I'd also love to be able to PvP with my main, and this would make it possible without an impact on my PvE performance.

We'll definitely see a lot of dual specs that range wildly between talent trees, especially with hybrid classes, but I think it's being overlooked just how much a talent build that is heavy in one tree needs to change for different activities in the game. I'm a resto druid, and I find that my optimum build for healing in heroics is different than the one I use for higher end raids. These changes are small, but they can be significant especially when factoring in gems and glyphs. This is even more the case when you're talking a PVP resto build, and then even moreso for an arena resto build.
So while we'll be seeing people going boomkin/resto or prot/ret and every other combination out there, I think a lot of people will find the dual specs just as useful for minor tweaks to a spec they already have. I jumped immediately on the "Ooo, I can boomkin!" aspect of this change, but as it comes closer I wonder if I shouldn't have a 5-man healing spec to compliment my current raid spec.

i'm a bit of a pessimist about this. what i see happening:
warrior: "i'm arms and fury"
priest: "sorry i'm disc and shadow" (i don't have a priest myself per se, but i've ran with some that had said i'm dps-i'm disc)
druid: "not healing. i'm a boomkin and feral (or resto and not tank)"
paladin: "i'm shockadin and retadin" (though the lot may know shockadin is core in the holy tree, the many will vehemently state it's only dps. can we please coin a clever putdown for those dolts?)
death knight: (i don't have one myself, but i'm sure you get the picture-they'll probably spec in two different dps types to "try them out")
my fear is that those that don't want to heal or tank won't. yes there will be many that spec dps and either heal or tank. sadly, it may just be an excuse for those with the potential to just shy further away from those duties.
i hope i'm wrong.

Dualspecs will benefit "pure" DPS classes in this way too. Like...I'm specced into Affliction with a sideline into Demonology for survivability when I'm questing. I like being able to handle multiple mobs at once cause that's the way I like to play my class.
But things like Improved Fear, Improved Felhunter, and CoEx are pretty useless for me in an instance, so I'd love to be able to drop them for things that are better for me.
The Scarlet Mathematician Jan 16th 2009 12:36PM
That Disc priest must have been messing with you. Even when tweaked towards PvP, Disc is still a healing tree.
Addressing your larger point, I agree that people who don't want to tank or heal won't change their minds because of duel specs. However, I think a lot of people wouldn't mind tanking or healing in a pinch, but can't stomach the cost of constant respeccing. In that regard, I think duel specs will help a lot.
Bravo Jan 16th 2009 8:12AM
Wow, imagine that. A Wow insider writer specing dual PVE. Who would have ever guessed that.
Liel Jan 16th 2009 8:14AM
Dual Spec would have been most welcome the patch before the expansion. This way bugs would have been worked out.
I don't mind healing and am usually heal spec on my pally/priest at max level but leveling holy is terrible. I would love to be able to be ret/shadow on my toons when questing and when the guild runs a 5 man switch to holy and with the changes to gear spell power its the same items anyhow for my priest.
Right now we are always looking for heals since the healers tend to spec dps to level quicker.
Alison Jan 16th 2009 11:04AM
I like that you looked at this from a leveling standpoint, because I hadn't thought of it that way before.
Leveling Holy *is* hard. I got lucky because my husband wanted to level a tank and we were a great leveling team. The main reason we stuck to our guns is that leveling with a straight healing build & straight tanking build made me a better healer and him a better tank when we hit 80. Instead of respeccing from Shadow to Holy on my Priest and having a new play style I wasn't used to, I had been healing for 79 levels and already knew what I was doing.
The idea of being able to to both while leveling is great. Thinking about this dual-spec, I have no idea what to do with my Holy Priest because I've never been Discipline or Shadow before, and wouldn't know how to effectively play either one. If I had been leveling with Holy *and* Shadow, however, I'd be able to have experience in both specs before I got thrown into raids as a DPS class.
This makes me look forward to leveling an alt again!
Shad0wembrace Jan 16th 2009 8:14AM
With a holy paladin as my main, I'm looking forward to this dual-spec, whenever it may come.
I've always loved tanking on my holy paladin, but between respec'ing every week between my PVE spec and my PVP spec, that's no less than 100, sometimes up to 300g a week, so I will usually never spec tank because that just ups the bill.
So, depending on what my guild needs, I'll be using the dual spec to be a tankadin and a holydin, as I really don't like ret too much. :-/
SteveV Jan 16th 2009 8:26AM
Amazing, I am sure I didn't post this but it sounds exactly like me :)
Yeah, I am hoping to get Prot spec for 5-man/solo and Holy for raids. I guess that would give me the option of using prot in raids but with the healer shortages atm, that really isn't a consideration.
Gormaggus Jan 16th 2009 8:53AM
Same thing here, I was holy in BC and am prot now but I've already got a relatively good holy set together and am eagerly awaiting dualspecs so I don't have to spend 100 gold every time I want to heal a 5-man (as my tanking gear is vastly superior and thus better for raids).
