"I Play WoW" is probably the premiere
World of Warcraft-related application on social networking site Facebook. We
reported on it a while back, and since then, it's come quite a long way, including bringing in Armory updates when that became possible, and slowly growing over the past six months. And now they've hit another milestone -- Korale of Medivh (who runs the app with his wife Jeanelly, also on Medivh) has announced that they've
reached over 100,000 users tracking over 260,000 characters. That's quite an undertaking. He also says that over 70% of people invited to the app actually use it (which is fairly high, we'd imagine, for Facebook), and that over 40,000 people visit the app at least once a month to update their status.
Congrats to Korale and Jeanelly on all their hard work. Our own Facebook page isn't quite as big --
it's at 2,601 fans so far, but we're aiming higher. Our very own Turpster from the
WoW Insider Show has promised us a brand new song if we can break 4,000 fans, so if you're on Facebook (or even if you're not yet, it's free to sign up) and have a few
WoW-playing friends to invite, send them our way -- the sooner we get 4,000 fans, the sooner we get that song (and Turpster tells us he might even have a few other familiar faces on WoW Insider join in, too). Sure, it's not 100,000, but if we can hit that magic 4,000, the results should be worth it.

Apparently 100,000 people didn't get the memo that recruiters don't like to hire WoW players
+ it's a given that any prospective employer will try to look up your facebook, myspace, linkedin, etc
ald, first - let the hate flow
Brewmaiden Jan 16th 2009 2:09PM
the funny thing about wow hate from employers, is that if you change the name of what you do in a raid to something like, World War II reinactor, it would be viewed as good way to develop leadership skills.

Apparently commenter has never heard of a private page?
Alchemistmerlin Jan 16th 2009 5:31PM
Set security to Private.

Really? The owner of my company is the one who first turned me on to WoW. We are now in the same guild and sometimes whisper about work.
FlameFlash Jan 16th 2009 2:24PM
I personally like the "Hearthstone" app.
And regarding the recruiter comment. I'm pretty sure my facebook/myspace pages are nicely locked down and private.
Not like I have much personal information on those anyway. I always shudder when I see somebody with an 'open' profile with their contact information easily out there for the world to see.
I get more google hits by 'flameflash' than I do my real name.
Merkin Jan 16th 2009 2:45PM
Yeah, "I Play Wow" was stagnant for a while and was buggy with updating my toons. I switched to Hearthstone, too, and love it.
Cleer Jan 16th 2009 3:17PM
FYI Flameflash gets just below 30.000 hits on google, so its not really a big surprice that, that is more than with your real name -.-
FlameFlash Jan 16th 2009 4:17PM
LOL.
Very true Cleer. Just trying to make a point about the whole HR recruitment research process. Probably didn't do a very good job at it. ;)

I've thought about joining that Facebook group. But the problem is, is that I am a closet WOW'er. Only my wife and like 4 real life friends know that I play.
Firestride Jan 16th 2009 2:32PM
Yeah, I try and keep it a secret too. My little brother (12) somehow got addicted to Ultima Online when he was like 9. I can't let him ever see me play the far superior WoW.
Twowolves Jan 16th 2009 2:30PM
I'm very open about my WoWness and will have to join both pages. My wife actually convinced me to make a FB page in the first place.
Demigod Jan 16th 2009 2:54PM
Might want to wait a bit before trying this...it's getting slammed right now.
Nick Gerakines Jan 16th 2009 3:19PM
It's doing pretty good right now. We've got a queuing mechanism in place to keep us from really hammering the armory. People might get queue messages but their characters will still get added. All in all I'm pretty happy with how I Play WoW is performing under this nice spike in traffic.
Suiz Jan 16th 2009 2:48PM
You should run a report on the Hearthstone app.
Better in my opinion.
ScottyD Jan 16th 2009 2:54PM
I Play Wow is still buggy as hell. I'm actually about to remove it now that I've seen people recommending another (Hearthstone). I haven't been able to update my toons reliably in ages.
Alizar Jan 16th 2009 2:59PM
Really WoW Insider you need to stop telling us about these things. As soon as you do they get crushed, lol.
Voltage Spike Jan 16th 2009 3:01PM
I use Hearthstone and it's heads and shoulders above I Play WoW. A little promotion for it wouldn't hurt the number of people that use it. :)
ScottyD Jan 16th 2009 4:08PM
Ok... I just installed Hearthstone and tried it out. Sorry, Nick... your application has been far too buggy in exactly the same way (across all browsers) for far too long.
As for Hearthstone... Smooth and simple. No mysterious crash messages... it updates the toon when I ask it to... awesome. I would heartily recommend this over I Play WoW.

I tried "I Play WoW" at one point, then found something similar "WoW Characters" [http://apps.facebook.com/wow_characters], which I found to be a bit more of a comprehensive display. That one now sits proudly between TopFriends, SuperPoke, and Bushisms quote generator.
