I think it's almost easier to make money on an alt than a main at times, especially when the alt's on another server. It's easier to practice financial discipline when there's no safety net, and your bags and bank are typically better organized too. Then, of course, alts are usually far less distracted. Mains are often engaged in dungeon runs or raids, and that eats up a lot of farming, questing, or just plain me-time.
