Blood Pact: Patch 3.0.8 and the portent of good things

Not excitingly, most of Patch 3.0.8 consists of bug fixes, so there won't be any major changes to gameplay or dramatic shifts in the way we do things. The biggest change is arguably in the way Ritual of Summoning works, which will save us Soul Shards the way Soulwells changed how we handed out candy. The new mechanic creates a sort of summoning object -- currently some sort of infernal flasher who opens up his cloak -- that works almost exactly like an instance summoning stone. This is great for raids, but not so hot for parties when you just want to summon one person. It has a cooldown of two minutes (down from the originally planned five).
The other really big thing is the new tagging -- or tapping, as Blizzard likes to call it -- mechanics. In Patch 3.0.8, "all player spells which cause a creature to become aggressive to you will now also immediately cause the creature to be tapped." This means no more annoying Hunters stealing our mobs with a stupid Arcane Shot before our Corruption has had a chance to tick. No class benefits from this change more than Warlocks, so while it has practically no application in raids and dungeons, it's been a long time coming for the common grind.
The good news is that the simple bug fixes actually improve our DPS somewhat. It's not huge, but after mind-numbing tests on the PTR, I'm breaking out about 200-300 more DPS on the same spec with the same gear than on live for Affliction. I gave 0 /41 /30 a shot, too, but I wasn't properly Glyphed for it and wasn't comfortable with Conflagrate Incinerate spam. On the other hand, other Warlocks testing -- and swore by -- the same build were getting better results on the PTR, as well. Overall, the Patch looks decent for the class and we'll be seeing more buffs than nerfs in general.
Yes, there'll be nerfs, as well, although not to Demonology as originally indicated by the Patch notes. Debuffs in general will be affected, thanks to the change in dispel mechanics, which removes Fear (among other crowd control spells such as Seduction) from the umbrella of dispel protection. The change effectively nerfs debuff classes such as Death Knights and Warlocks but buffs dispelling classes such as Paladins. The change also mostly applies to PvP -- where Warlocks already suffer -- but we're getting some buffs in that department, too.
The most important one is that Demonic Circle should now remove all snare effects, which should improve our survivability quite a bit. Not sure if this means stuns, too, although the wording doesn't seem to indicate that. For all intents and purposes, though, it should ideally work similar to Mages' Blink as a means of escape. Also important on the PvP front is how Demon Armor and Demon Skin have had their armor increased by about 120%, with the former granting 2100 bonus Armor, up from 950 on live. Just how much these changes will improve our survivability in Arenas or PvP in general remains to be seen, but it's definitely an improvement. As a side note, the Demonic Circle trick will no longer work in Dalaran Sewer Arena (which for many of us was the only thing that let us last the match for longer than 20 seconds).
Drain Mana was reworked to drain a percentage of maximum mana instead of a set amount, so there's now only one rank of the spell (it'll disappear from your bars, took me a while to find this on my Spellbook). This change helps low-mana specs like Retribution and Enhancement, but also means we can actually put a dent in a Mage's kajillion-mana pool. That should be sweet. It also now generates a small amount of threat, which means Blizzard should probably get on improving Soul Shatter.
Glyph of Conflagrate has changed to no longer consume Immolate or Shadowflame, making it work more like Glyph of Flame Shock. Curse of Agony will scale better with Glyph of Curse of Agony, with each subsequent tick beyond the original duration dealing 33% more damage than the previous one. This should provide a decent DPS increase and should remind us all not to clip our DoTs.
Finally, the other big change is the fix to demon scaling. Summoned demons will now have higher health and deal more damage, and scales properly with Fel Armor, amounting to about a non-scientifically tested 30% more on my Felhunter on a dummy. It's actually smaller than it sounds, considering that it contributes only about 150 DPS on live. That's not much, but it should scale better in a raid environment.
Overall, Patch 3.0.8 is going to be a good one for us. But the real good news is that Blizzard is working hard on making bigger, more impactful changes for the next major patch, Patch 3.1. Ghostcrawler has already called on the Warlock community to contribute, asking which spells don't deserve a slot on our bars. They have their own plans for the class, but want to "make informed decisions", which is a good sign. I know the changes can't come soon enough, but true fixes will take time.
Changes we can look forward to is a major revision to the Soul Shard mechanic, one which Ghostcrawler promises to be "very cool." I hope that cool in his definition includes easing up the requirements for spells like Shadowburn, Soul Fire, and Soulshatter. If those spells didn't empty our Abyssal Bags like Homer Simpson wipes out a box of donuts, I guarantee that they'd find their way to more rotations.
Affliction is way fun, although many of the Warlocks I've spoken to on the PTR are swearing off the spec because it makes their eyes bleed. Blizzard's looking at that, too, with options on making durations more uniform or reducing the number of spells to cast. My take, personally, is that Haunt should refresh more DoTs than just Corruption, which should ease up the Affliction priority cast cycle considerably. There's probably the danger of making Haunt a little overpowered, but I know that casting it now takes highest priority because it saves me one GCD and because of Shadow Embrace. It's mandatory enough as it is when going deep Affliction, so making it a lynchpin spell just makes sense to me.
The last great thing I'm excited about is a promised change to demons. While we shouldn't expect demon DPS to rival those of Hunter pets, Demonology is one spec that should receive massive returns from demons. Considering deep Demonology is sub-standard for raiding -- 0 /41 /30 being the best Demonology spec right now -- Blizzard is looking at improving the Voidwalker, Succubus, and even the new and improved Infernal and Doomguard. A true utility spec with competitive DPS would be a welcome change, indeed. All told, Patch 3.0.8 is merely something we'll need to get by until we get to good stuff.

thank you ghosttroller.
a pure dps class never should have been allowed to suck so bad across the board.
guess they figured locks had thier time in tbc, and wanted to be sure that people rerolled DK's : /
joerendous Jan 17th 2009 12:31PM
"ghosttroller" lol
i like him, but this made me chuckle
skreeran Jan 18th 2009 12:25AM
Meh, at least from my perspective, that's about how it was to play a mage in tbc... They take you for the buff, food and portal, and you got out DPS'd by everybody and their mother (unless their mother was a ret pally).
Not to say "You deserved it!" or "Wait a while to fix Locks, LOL!," just saying that you will get fixed eventually, just like how mages are now chart-toppers (and I won't even mention Ret pallies).
It will make me a bit sad on the inside to go back to being wtfpwned by Warlocks whenever they get fixed though. (Maybe this is just my 2v2 experience talking, but getting chain feared sucks when you're the healer).
Docp Jan 17th 2009 12:37PM
My guess is Blizz made locks suck as much as possible to only keep the core players playing, then when they turn them up to 11 there's not too many locks in the end game.
Shulkman Jan 17th 2009 12:41PM
Eh, warlocks still screwed, and will continue to be screwed for the foreseeable future. I can't believe this sorry crap made it out of beta. It will be months before anything gets done now.
rosencratz Jan 17th 2009 5:11PM
Why? We were told what we were going to get in this patch before the Beta even went up.
It's common knowledge we have to wait for the Ulduar patch for our proper tune up, has been for a long time now.

As a to-the-death Affliction lock, the SS change doesn't excite me too much, but I understand how it's a good thing for my Destro brothers and sisters.
I'm personally hoping that they don't do too many drastic things to the Affliction rotation. It's chaotic, and it's crazy, and it's tough to keep track of it all, but it's FUN. It's a sort of craziness I've missed since they changed Steady Shot way back in 3.0.2. I like the complexity, and I like always having something to do.
Stone_Rhino Jan 17th 2009 1:09PM
Fun?
Like haunt bouncing back and not refreshing corruption fast enough, so it drops off, kind of fun?
Or maybe you were talking about immolate failing to refresh because "a more powerful spell is active" kind of fun.
Oh, I know, you meant. Youre talking about using the most complicated rotation in game just to come out even with the hunters and warriors using 3 buttons.
Ill agree that the affliction rotation can be interesting at first, but after a while, you realise that the amount of effort put into such rotations is only rewarding you with DPS on par of what everyone else does with half the effort and twice the leeway.
Cyanea Jan 17th 2009 1:30PM
Yes.
FUN.
I could faceroll on my keyboard, and spam volleys all day while AFKing with something on the other monitor. Or, I could work for my DPS and have a sense of pride when I outdo that huntard or that Doucheknight (I did that once. It was great.)
Fun is a relative. I LIKE complex. I miss the days of shot rotations...looking at that new bow and trying to figure out how to best time your Steady Shot around your Autoshot and Arcane Shot. DPS meters aren't an epeen contest for me. I set a personal DPS goal for a run, and I feel proud of myself if I stay above that goal. To hell with the damage anyone else has done.
The real fun is working out a good rotation so that you don't run into problems with Immolate and not refreshing your Corruption with Haunt. The one I use isn't perfect, but it gets the job done. Haunt > UA > CoA > Corruption > Siphon > Immolate > SBx2 > Haunt > UA > SBx2 > Immolate, etc. If there's a fight that requires a lot of movement, then the rotation obviously gets screwed up and DoTs drop off, but that's the nature of those fights. It takes time and practice (those dummies taking up space in the capitals are perfect) to perfect your rotation, but I guess I forgot that no one wants to try anymore.

I'm also an affliction warlock, and have spent 95% of my time in game as such. I find that managing affliction's spells is a lot of work ... and also, a lot of fun. It's interesting and intense to manage my DoT and debuff stack when fighting boss mobs. I don't mind the complexity, but I'd sure like to get some extra DPS for my trouble. Given the difficulty of keeping our spell stack rolling along I think we really should be tweaked to provide more DPS.
That being said, I'm currently #1 or #2 on our WWS after Naxx 10 and 25 runs in my guild. An extra 10% would enable me to beat out that pesky rogue who competes with me for the top spot.
Cyanea Jan 17th 2009 3:04PM
I can agree that it'd be nice to get a bit of a boost to our DPS, but I could live without it. As I said, I have more fun beating my own personal damage goals versus making sure I'm on top of the charts.
If I wanted to come out on top of the DPS meter, I'd load up my Retadin and faceroll on the keyboard a couple of times.
rosencratz Jan 17th 2009 4:59PM
I consider it fun aswell and I too worry the changes will over simplify things and make life comparitively dull.
@Stone_Rhino - Yes the playstyle IS fun most of what you point out are bugs and can be compensated for untill they're fixed.
I might not have the highest DPS on my Aff lock but my DPS is still up there in the top 5 and adequate for downing bosses in DPS races and at the end of the day i'm not finding any other classes/specs as interesting/entertaining to play.... If Aff is too hard for you why don't you roll Destro or another spec?
Hansbrix Jan 17th 2009 7:28PM
I've found the best rotation for me this: Haunt>CoA>Siphon Life>Corruption>Unstable Affliction.
Haunt is 4 seconds longer than Unstable affliction and those are our two casting spells of the rotation (besides the filler Shadowbolt/Lifedrain spam). By casting unstable affliction last, its duration will end the same time the first Haunt finishes too. After that, Whenever my haunt ends i recast that, then follow up with a talented 2.5 second Shadowbolt and recast Unstable affliction.
By putting corruption in the middle, it gives me a 3-4 second breather of recasting Haunt.
i found that the glpyh of Curse of Agony helps out. The curse of agony and Siphon life are our longest lasting curses, with the glpyhed CoA lasting now 28 and our Sihpon life lasting 30 seconds.
It usually works out that in one Cycle of CoA and Siphon life, I'll have gone through Haunt and Unstable affliction twice.
Has anyone number crunched to determine if drain life (when Talented and whatnot) can be replaced with shadowbolt spam?
sephirah Jan 17th 2009 7:33PM
@Cyanea
The only problem I see with locks in PvE is that they're not fully balanced with other classes.
My last Recount on a full Naxx 25 for dmg done was something like
BM Hunter 7%

"I gave 0 /41 /30 a shot, too, but I wasn't properly Glyphed for it and wasn't comfortable with Conflagrate spam."
It's quite hard spamming Conflagrate with a build that cannot even have it...
Zach Jan 17th 2009 3:07PM
Gah. I meant Incinerate. Can't spam Conflag. Thanks!
maarick Jan 17th 2009 1:04PM
i agree with skullman all the way.
few things, ive thought about this a lot. more then great GC im sure.
first off - demon armor is in no way a buff, its almost a nerf, yea, i can get some extra armor, about 1200, but i lose about 400 SP since i cant have fel armor on...so the fight lasts the same amount of time....so this does absolutley nothing for me when i get rogued or fight any melee for that matter, i have 2k sp with fel armor, 1555ish without it...so now i live longer (few seconds, 3 maybe?) and now i cant do the damage i was doing to kill the guy...THIS DOESNT HELP AT ALL....IT DOES NOTHING, ITS ACTUALLY A NERF CAUSE IT DOES NOTHING AGAINST CASTERS TOO, Makes us Worse. - so i need to be able to put them both on, of this sorry excuse for a fix needs to be rethought,
next - soul link should be trainable - can i have as many talent points as everyone else in the game? thanks. its manadtory, not a luxury
demoni circle - casting time to put it down is terrible, not getting me out of stuns makes it just as useless... i wont be rooted, great, how about help with the rogues one on one, or are we supposed to lose 100% of the time? what am i supposed to do? take 40 steps, put circle down, take 40 steps, put circle down? horrible, and 40 yards range? come on you have us that much?
fear - i understand noone likes to be feared....(i dont like being hammered of justiced and killed before it over ends 9 out of 10 time)its all we got, can u killed it with immunity, and the new DRs, every single class in the game has a spec to be immune to fear, including warlock pets, and thats my only CC, yea thats it, only one, and now it works on noone, ever for more then 3 sec, but i can get hit for 8k 3x in a row and die. and fears OP...oh btw, warlocks cant be immune to fear, but hunter and locks pets can - laughable, you should be embarressed blizzard - Fear needs to be redesigned or removed from game and give us a viable CC
demon form - how about a 51st talent point that doesnt leave us useless 2 min and 30 sec out of every 3 min
chaos bolt - i may not even be here complaining if it worked like it WAS DESIGNED AND PUT ON BETA! - god forbid we touch those queers in their special bubble...
this is just the beginning of what needs to be done
Amaxe Jan 17th 2009 1:07PM
I've said before that getting killed by a stealthed rogue is not a problem limited to warlocks. Many classes complain about going 100-0 before they can get out of stun
Cyanea Jan 17th 2009 1:46PM
Why are you worried about Fearing warlock pets?
I hear Banish works wonders on those demon types.
Scaramanja Jan 17th 2009 1:48PM
Wait so you think Warlocks should be able to have Fel Armor AND Demon Armor on at the same time? OK as long as Mages can have Ice Armor, Mage Armor and Molten Armor at the same time and Shaman can have Earth Shield, Water Shield and Lightning Shield on at the same time. It's forcing you to make a decision, more survivability vs more spell power.
