Steelseries WoW mouse not so wow-worthy?

How has your experience with the Steelseries mouse been? Are you one of the lucky Europeans who won one in Blizzard's Holiday giveaway or managed to snag one of these lately? There aren't too many reviews over the web by players who actually play World of Warcraft, so it's interesting to see if Richie's is an isolated case (although a couple of posters on his blog concur with his findings). The mouse doesn't have a driver for the Mac, and Steelseries doesn't seem to be producing one soon, so I haven't popped out the $99.99 (or more expensive 89.99 EUR) for it. After reading Richie's review -- or rant, rather -- I'm not certain I still want to, either.

I took one look at that mouse and said NO.

I'm always extremely wary of any tech product that has some unrelated branding slapped on it. Good products sell themselves.
I use a Logitech G5 at home and a generic Microsoft mouse at work. Both of them work perfectly, and have for 5+ years.

Saw this thing at blizzcon and I didn't like it. For WoW I'm more than happy with the Microsoft Sidewinder gaming mouse. The buttons there are nice and easy to hit, its wired so that may be a turnoff to some people.

I have a logitech MX Revolution mouse that is technically an executive mouse, but I love it for wow... It would probably be a bit too much for some FPS games, but for raiding it beats most "gaming mice" I've tried. I have had great success with Logitech mice and keyboards, but I absolutely hate their headphones. Every logitech headset I've tried has been poorly made and uncomfortable, with the gaming series being the absolute worst.

So, I have been using an N52 with a standard mouse/keyboard. Since I canceled my order on this make believe mouse, which Logitech or Razor mouse should I get? I want programmable buttons (I need to bind them to shift, ctrl, jump, etc.).

I use an MX 518, and it works pretty well.

Heh... and here I am using a Microsoft Optical 3 Button mouse.
It may not be the best, but it works and it has outlasted the computer I got it for.

just go Razer ;)

I've had one for about a week and I'd say its about 50/50 with the comments above. The design isn't the most ergonomic but then again I've been using a Logitech mx510 for about 4-5 years now and it was quite an upgrade for me. The D pad is a little funky to use and the pinky button is allmost impossible to use right but the buttons on top come in great handy. My pinky and middle finger seemed kind of displaced but I adapted after a while and now its comfy. The scroll wheel is silent too, which makes for a much better experiance. Was it worth the 1oo I dropped on it? Probably not, but for some its more a woah factor than a use factor.

My mouse is a simple Fire Line from Sunbeam. I got it near 5 years ago because I wanted to replace my old ball mouse with one of those new-fangled optical ones. Plus, it's got a blue LED in it. It's got two-buttons and a mouse wheel and has worked perfectly for me ever since I got it. The kicker? It cost me 6 bucks.

ive been beating up an Mx310 for a few years now, maybe it needs to "break" so I can justify getting a new one ^_^
pscof42 Jan 17th 2009 4:36PM
I'm using the Logitech Mx310 and I think its just fine. Sure, it has a cable, but really ... who cares? Its accurate enough for WoW (as someone mentioned, this isn't a FPS), it has a good wheel, the 5 buttons you can use for WoW play are responsive and solid, good weight to the whole thing. The only problem I have with it is that I wish the sixth "Alt-tab" button could be programed for something too.

I recently picked up a Razer Lachsis...while at first it was odd to adjust to the new hand positioning....now that I have used i for a few weeks i LOVE it. I also got it for 40$ cheaper so ya..haha

Get a Logitech MX Revolution (my other mouse)
Picked up the WoW mouse, I'm only able to use it now because I've uninstalled the software you "need" to run it, and I'm running Autohotkey with an >8000 character script to detect the default hexadecimal HID strings in order to actually set up and map keys onto the mouse in a way that actually works because the default software is so incredibly terrible.
I would, in no way, recommend this mouse to ANYONE, even though I'm currently using it.

Damn. Who honestly really needs that?
Telarc Jan 17th 2009 3:47PM
Does anyone else use track-ball?
I use a Kensington Expert Mouse. Is that strange or what? Everyone that uses my computer fusses at me because it is so odd! I love it though.
csarcops Jan 17th 2009 7:30PM
I use a Logitech mouse, it's got a trackball that goes right under my thumb. Best mouse I've ever used, couldn't imagine playing without it.

This is getting OT, but still... The praise for Logitech products is certainly justified WRT keyboards an mice, but personally I would not buy speakers from any computer accessories company. In my experience the kit is usually average sounding at best and priced way to high for what you get.
Just grab some entry level active monitors from Fostex, KRK or Yamaha for about the same price than the higher end computer speakers. Much, much better sound IMO -- and no surprise really since these companies have been producing top audio products for a few decades...

I personally use a Logitech G5 mouse, Most of my friends own it as well (none play WoW), and we all love ours. They are very high quality and I have had little problems with it. Side buttons are very useful for vent and you can re-assign buttons if you feel the need to.
Keyboard wise, Logitech G11. Two words, Macro Keys. They allow you to map each G key to a certain path, like to open WoW, or create a macro that does something, (I have found for duel boxing it is incredibly useful).
Overall I have found that Logitech's products are by far the best quality for anything.

i was fortunate enought to get the mouse and a G11 for the holidays....and I now average 1-2 blue screen crashes a day....all drivers updated, including BIOS....seems to be localized to mouse. Not much help from steelseries CS.....which is too bad, as I do love the moues.
