Breakfast topic: Poaching
I'm working on growing our little guild. I've met with some success. I don't spam trade chat to advertise our guild bank, vent, website or or smokin' hot tabard (all of which we have). I like to get to know people a bit before I bring them into the fold. The best way that I know how to do that is to run instances with them.Since we're small, I PUG a lot, so I'm introduced to many players. I'm looking for folks that are both good at what they do and would be a good fit for what we've established. I've found that many times people pug because even though they're in a guild they can't seem to get the assistance that they need. I find that some are actively looking for a change and others just generally enjoy the experience grouping with my comrades.
I'm not one to break up a happy home. My fuzzy, ursine ears perk up when I see someone that's not already guilded. It's a potential recruit! I watch them play throughout the instance and also watch their social interaction with the group. If all goes well I ask them about their goals and try to ferret out a wee bit of their personality. Talking over vent helps too.
It's a little different when someone is already guilded. When I run PUGs with people repeatedly, I often ask them about their guilds. Many state that either their guild is small or that they're just "social." If it seems they're dissatisfied, and a good fit, I extend them a no-pressure invitation to come check us out.
I want to grow my guild with the right folks, but I don't want to be a poacher. Given the choice between all-guild runs all the time, and occasionally pugging, I will continue to group with strangers. How do you handle recruiting in pugs?

We only recruit pugs from our raids. In 5 mans or heroics we tend not to take people because they end up not being as good as we thought :(
An example of this would be; We need a few good shadow priests with alot of hit for heroic naxx, so we pug some, and see how they do. We then invite the ones we (the officers) like and we try to get their gear, or their skill up to par for the fight.
That way may not be the best way, or the most reliable way to recruit good players, but we aim not to embarrass ourselves in trade channel with a bunch of spam about us, or be the biggest guild on the server, with only 20 active members.

I used to hate pugging people into a guild run. I always figured that if we had enough people online when the run started we should work together so we could refine our skills for raiding. Now I almost hope for there to be a slot or two empty in the group because my guilds asspirations have increased with the new content and want to start building the guild for a 25 man content group.
I've been passively and actively rectruited my many guilds as a healer. People have asked me in the middle of raids where I was the pug, "So are you happy with your guild and if not would you consider joining us?" My only reply is, "Yeah I'm happy with being the guild leader, but thank you for wanting me to join your guild."
If I ever get tired of being a guild leader though, I know exactly where to go to. :P

I've had people attempt to poach me several times on both of my 80's. Only once did the poacher actually succeed, and my rogue's still with their guild, but all the other times I had to decline (my RL friend would slit my throat in my sleep if I had my tank leave his guild).
All of the times I've had poaching attempts made against me except one, were made in a PuG. Black Morass, Halls of Stone, Karazhan, Obsidian Sanctum... And just a random whisper from someone when I was idling in Dalaran. Not sure if that counts.
I must say it's a rather effective way of getting in guild members that you know for certain are going to be at least competent.

What I wonder, and would like to see an explanation for;
Random Guild Invites
I'm not talking about some jackass with a charter that needs to get signatures, so he spams random strangers. I'm talking the guy that invites you to his established guild.
Why would they want Random Guy #54b?
Why would anyone in their right mind want to JOIN such a guild?

As part of Ùnforgiven, [A] Arathor, we started out with only people we knew IRL. we pugged with a few people in heroics but mostly kept with the 5 starting members of our guild. As we pugged we met some very awesome people, instead of straight up "poaching" we would just tell the ones that impressed us that if they wished to take us up on our offer that there was a spot in our guild for them. after we got some more of those people simple word of mouth lead us to the majority of members that we have today, and I cant think of a single person we have recruited that has betrayed us yet.

I am a Alliance Holy Pally on Darkspear. And I only run instances as a pug and have some pretty good results with this method. I read all the post about guild problems so avoid them all together to the point that I have a guild with only one other member and we properly named the guild PuG. If your guild is lacking good heals I wont join but will run with you, just look me up my name is Eluss.
P.S. I never poach but will need if i need.
