Extended maintenance for Tuesday
As expected, tomorrow will have extended maintenance on all North American realms between 3:00 a.m. PST / 6:00 a.m. EST and 11:00 a.m. PST / 2:00 p.m. EST. I'm told that hope springs eternal, so hopefully the realms will actually be up on time tomorrow. And it looks like there's a good chance that 3.0.8 will be live when the realms come up. But I'll not make any guarantees here. Well, who am I kidding. I gave it an 80% chance that the patch will go live. But I digress...
If the extended maintenance turns into extended-extended maintenance, we'll let you know. And while we're planning some great content for you all during the down time tomorrow, there is something on TV you'll probably want to watch around noon EST anyways. So perhaps downtime isn't all that bad after all.

Can I voice my confusion everytime you say "extended maintenance" when really I think of this as "normal maintenance" times? You should call this "normal" maintenance and the days they have rolling restarts "shortened" maintenance.

I can't really argue with that. =)
Let me throw it around the WoW Insider bullpen and see what others think. It all hearkens back to the old Blizzard categorization of anything beyond 7am to 11am (or was it 5am to 11am?) downtime as extended maintenance, but it definitely appears to have changed now.

Agreed - 8 hours is no longer extended maintenace. Its normal maintenance and hardly suprising.
Gone are the old days of 6 hour maintenance.

I agree with Charc--eight hours are more than likely regular maintenance now, even though hints from Europe imply 3.0.8 really is coming (and my hunter will weep endlessly tonight), which spells extra work for Blizzard's IT department.
Anyway, I think 8 hours seems about right for regular maintenance now; as far as I understand WoW realms, Blizzard has added not only new realms (and the underlying groups of servers for each), but also servers for Northrend, instances and raids to each single realm. Unlike the rolling restarts, checking this increased number of servers in just four hours (or whatever it was before) would quickly (and has proven to) blow up in their faces should something bad happen.
Like many others, I'd rather have Blizzard do "regular" maintenance periods of longer duration and once in a while get done a bit earlier, like they did last week.

I also tend to think of this as "normal" maintenance, with rolling-restart-tuesdays being "short" maintenance.
Tuesdays arent any good if youre in Australia. Maintenance time is always peak time - usually begins around 10pm in the evening! :/

True that.

Not to be the downer but i dont think the patch is forthcoming because Blizzard still has the PTR up and usually drops it the day before the patch at the latest.
