Breakfast topic: When real life is greater than WoW
Believe it or not, there are things out there that are more important than a computer game. Occasionally you need to turn off WoW and go do something like eat, bathe, sleep, engage in some form of non-finger exercise, etc...One of the problems with a MMORPG like WoW is that some people often get consumed in the dynamic social and entertainment parts of the game, leaving off activities and events happening in the real world. This is problematic for a number of reasons, and is something that everyone who plays this game a lot should guard against happening to them.
And with that in mind, today I heartily recommend that you take a respite from our Azerothian domain and head over to the television to watch some of the presidential inauguration. No matter if you're a democrat or a republican or a whig, watching the historic swearing in of America's first African American commander-in-chief is something that you'll want to be able to tell your children and grandchildren about. The last thing you'll want to say was "I was playing WoW with all those cool 3.0.8 changes."
The looks you'll get from them will be one of bewilderment. Now if you're twisted like I am you might just want to say that anyways to amuse yourself, but still, it'll only be funny if it's not true.
So take a break from the game today. WoW will still be here when you get back (except the Mage class, that might get deleted, we'll keep you updated).

With the extended maintenance I'm sure a lot of WoW players will actually watch it, lol.
Oh yeah...FIR..nvm.

Well I'm Austrlian and it's 10PM here, so it's not something I'll be watching. It's definitely a historical moment though, and one I'm glad to be around for.
Real life is one of the reasons why the current 'ease' of content is so good. Even for a semi-hardcore guild like mine, you get pretty much all the content done in 2 nights at most, so you get 3-4 nights off per week (depending on if you do 10 mans in your off nights or not).
It's a pretty decent change from spending 4 nights a week wiping in Sunwell, and doing ZA bear runs on 2 of the other nights. ^_^
Wow, I do play this game a lot...
Raze Jan 20th 2009 9:13AM
It's a very strange thing when you claim you're "off" from playing a video game.
Gareth Jan 20th 2009 10:46AM
I class nights as off from wow, a bit too addicted ;)
But you have a good point, I'm liking some of the casual side of things for that same reason. Its not so much the raiding but everything else like rep is pretty easy to max out without spending your life doing it.
Now I've got a lot of spare time, level a alt? :)
Avashnea Jan 20th 2009 8:09AM
I wouldn't watch it even if I was paid to. I didn't vote for him and don't want him as president. This has NOTHING to do with him being black. I'm sick of the Democrats pulling the race card. SO WHAT that he's black?? He's a left wing liberal nut and he's going to ruin this country.
Obama- just another bum looking for change...
bob Jan 20th 2009 8:18AM
The Republicans left something to ruin? Really? How could this country possibly get any worse?
Avashnea Jan 20th 2009 8:25AM
The Republicans didn't cause the ruin, the Democrats got it that way.
Avashnea Jan 20th 2009 8:27AM
Most of them probably don't even know where Alaska IS, let alone that it's a state.
Bobo Jan 20th 2009 8:29AM
Dude, it's not about Obama being black. It's about him being sane, about him caring for your rights, about him caring for the economy instead of squandering it on a war we should never have been in.
There has been no more destructive a President than George W. Bush. He has destroyed this country's economy, this country's reputation, and the trust we have in our government.
Massadonious Jan 20th 2009 8:31AM
Because getting a hummer in the oval office caused the economy to crumble and was the reason we invaded Iraq.
skreeran Jan 20th 2009 8:34AM
I'm under the same persuasion as Avashnea.
As for you bob, let's just look at the facts:
Obama's tax plan taxes the rich simply for being rich. There's not even anything he's said he plans to use the money for, except give it to the poor, who will quickly exceed the middle class as far as government benefits (even though they pay less taxes).
With Millhouse as President, the Left will control the Senate, Congress, and the White House. They can pass any law they want. This is just a personal point coming from a Republican, but I don't like not being able to do ANYthing about the laws my government passes.
Abortion. 'Nuff said. Another personal point, but it's hypocritical for mother's to be allowed to kill their child at any time BEFORE it's born, but they get charged for murder if they kill them after. Either life is "sacred" or it's not. Abolish one of the other.
And lastly, he's most likely grant citizenship to 12 million illegal immigrants, who will from then on vote democrat, hoping to get some of those tasty lower class benefits. If Obama won by around 7 million votes (not actually that much, even though he had twice as many electoral votes, that's a broken system for you), then we're never gonna be given a fair chance to get elected as long as any other democrat can smooth talk his way into the hearts of the gullible (although no offense to you educated democrats, not saying you're gullible, I just believe that on the whole the democrat is more gullible, and the republican is more paraniod).
Did you know, most of the people Obama is picking for various offices actually come from the Clinton administration. That's not change, that's more of the same.
Anyway, I'd like to keep politics out of my WoW, because it invariably end with people (me) getting pissed at other people because of ideals, and I'd rather just be able to play unbiased.
Kylenne Jan 20th 2009 8:35AM
You know, I had my standard snarky reply for right wingers all ready to go, but I'm choosing not to go there with you.
What is happening today transcends political labels, party affiliation, and governing philosophies. Believe it or not, many of us on the political left have huge problems with Obama's stance on various issues and the choices he's made (just Google "Rick Warren invocation" for one example). As a member of the LGBT community, I've often thought Obama to be an opportunistic coward during this campaign and I was one of the few blacks I know that voted for Clinton in the primary. My vote for him was more a vote against McCain/Palin than anything. But today is not about any of that. It's not about who you or I voted for, it's not about talking heads screaming at each other, inciting fear, "terrorist fist bumps" or whatever Fox News is hyperventilating about. If you're too small-minded and consumed by hate about your guy losing to see that what is happening is bigger than all of us, I truly feel sorry for you. You really ought to take a cue from John McCain on this.
If you are not at all moved by people like my 100 year old great aunt who was born without the right to vote, whose father was born a slave, and has lived to see a man of color occupy what is arguably the most powerful position in the world, I don't know what to tell you. You truly don't understand our country's history, or why this is such a momentous historical occasion. I would suggest starting with Roots and/or the Autobiography of Malcolm X. Netflix a documentary called Eyes on the Prize. Today was four hundred years of painful history in the making. It does not mean our national shame with regards to the legacy of slavery is suddenly absolved, or that we're all going to live in a happy colorblind wonderland from here on. But today is going a long way towards fulfilling the promise of our foundational documents, that all men are truly created equal.
Hopefully more sooner than later, we can get around to including women in that statement too.
Massadonious Jan 20th 2009 8:43AM
A 6th grader should know where Alaska is. The fact that you think college students don't is another reason the education system needs an overhaul.

Let's not forget where the global economical crisis started too... I'll hint that it has something to do with oil and Middle East.
Cleoselene Jan 20th 2009 9:17AM
LOL, sorry 'bout your damn luck.

It's funny when people mention taxes and how it's unfair to the wealthy and big corporations.
Please read this, it will give you a whole different viewpoint:
http://rand.org/publications/randreview/issues/summer2008/horizon02.html
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/tax/view/
The problem is that average Americans assume that the wealthy pay every tax owed. But the attitude "in-style" this decade was to spend money on illegal tax shelters. Spending $1 million to prevent $2 million from being used by the US government for things we all require (roads, military, educational programs, healthcare, etc). It's currently a very exploited system. After the smoke clears from the mortgage crisis, the Wall Street fallout and abuses from short selling, we'll hopefully see some work done on cleaning up our tax system.

Anyone else find it funny that posts aimed towards being more conservative/republican are being rated down while the more liberal/democrat posts are being highly rated?
Just thought that was funny.
Ilnara Jan 20th 2009 10:50AM
You're either a troll, or a complete idiot.
What are you? Some small business owner who makes 200k a year and thinks you're part of the upper 5%?? ..
LoL....
