I'm afraid it is canon. Blizz is maintains pretty tight controls over their properties, and it wouldn't surprise me to find out that Blizzard laid out the general story arc for this and told the comic writer to follow it.

So, for some conjecture--Blizzard could be using this story arc to re-introduce Sargeras in some form. IF Medivh is the father, then Sargeras could have moved from him to the child. Again, lots of conjecture on my part.

Thing is, I had heard Sargeras had re-rolled a Ret Pally on a PvP server after patch 3.0. Said it was an upgrade over his Titan form.
