Wintergrasp fix incoming
While the details are scant, Crygil posted an update on the Wintergrasp situation.Essentially all the realms are going to be restarted on off-peak hours, and the fix should then kick in.
He notes that they are going to be monitoring realm stability and Wintergrasp closely. That leads me to believe they are not supremely confident in the fix. I'll hope that I'm wrong here and that they're just saying that to look good. Ideally the fix will be great and work off the bat.

quick! I need my vault fix! ( no pun intended). My whole tuesday ritual was thrown out of whack and ive been acting all disoriented ever since haha.

All I do all day is play Wintergrasp. I log on for 30 minutes every 2 1/2 hours. I don't know what time it is now.

We just gave up on Sart with 1 up, and couldn't even finish him with none up because of disconnects and lag. It don't make a tinker's damn what they do with fixing Winterfail, the whole damned game is broken right now.

Spelling error correction INCOMING!

Unless I'm wrong, Wintergrasp is already working on Lightbringer. We had server restarts a while back and it was working once Lightbringer finally came back up. (45 minutes later?) The NPCs were calling for people to go there and a short while later, the alliance had the Wintergrasp buff. I assume that means it's working.

Yeah, this lag is pretty nasty. Was trying to run instances with my friends (we're at level 75), and it was just hellish. So we gave up and figured we'd play our 39 twinks, thinking the lag was just in Northrend... but it's just as bad in BGs.
Lag is everywhere, absolutely pervasive.
Keyra Jan 21st 2009 11:23PM
Pervasive lag. Absolutely! I'm nowhere near even creating my first DK, and I'm on a low population RP server...and all I have to say is this: it's a good thing that I'm completing quests that are 5 levels beneath where I am, because with this lag, I've nearly died FIVE TIMES. I aggro, start to attack, and then just watch as I move around for about ten seconds. Then I'm back and my HP is down to half or less. Quickly do as much damage as possible, watch for a few more seconds as I stand there and then watch as my target falls dead...with my HP again at 1/2 of where it was.
Ugh...
I might have to find something else to do for the next week while waiting for this to be addressed by Blizzard. It's annoying, to say the least.
Keyra Jan 21st 2009 11:24PM
Um...that is...
"nowhere near even creating my first DK"...meaning that I'm nowhere near doing the instances that a lot of you are attempting to do with this lag...

The forums are acting up now too. I get an error message when I try to log in.
Do I see free game time coming if the problems keep piling up?
Andrew R. Jan 21st 2009 11:29PM
Correction. Forums are borked. I'm locked out.

ZOMG!!! There's a Crises' here. THEY DIDN'T FIX THE CLAMS!!!!! ZOMG BLIZZARD FIX THIS PROBLEM NAO!!!!
Aigarius Jan 22nd 2009 12:59AM
The problem most likely is related to the new way the Essence of Wintergrasp works. It now propogates to everyone on the continent immediately even if you are in an instance. However, considering that instances are handled by multiple different physical servers that are separate from the Northrend servers, any problems in the code that is intended to communicate with those instance servers could very well be the cause of the problem. It could very well be a scale problem, which is very hard to catch in testing.
I suspect that at the moment of victory the Northrend server locks up while trying to send hundreds of thousands of messages to tens of other servers. By the time it has finished doing that, a bunch of automatic anti-lock-up time outs would activate kicking everyone out. I would imagine that some of those deliveries also failed and the error propogated back resetting Wintersgrasp to an in-combat state.

in nazgrel WG is still down and the alliance has had the buff since the take down.last time it was the bug where the horde couldnt cap the relic. is it just my server or the WG bugs favor alliance?. if your taking the Battles down give both factions the buff or take it from both.
my2cents Jan 22nd 2009 3:32AM
That's just the way the dice landed with this bug and the need to disable Wintergrasp temporarily. I don't think it's an attempt to cheat horde out of loot.
Could they somehow make the buff apply to both factions or neither faction in the meantime? Possibly...But since they aren't doing that it's probably either an issue that's beyond their control or one that would cause even more bugs (which we can all agree is the last thing anyone wants right now.)
AyaJulia Jan 22nd 2009 6:51AM
Whoever won the last WG battle before they were disabled simply got lucky. On my server, Horde has had it for the last day and a half. We can go into Vault and they can't, we have Essence of WG and they don't, and the Alliance is just generally angreh. It was just dumb luck that we won the battle before they turned WG off. On other servers, Alliance got the dumb luck. /shrug... what can you do, except find another game activity to do (if there is one that's not busted for you). :P

No alterations to a codebase as absurdly complex as WoW can possibly be expected to cause no bugs, unexpected side effects, or regressions. Unless their software engineers are deities.
This does not seem to be the case.
Teresa Jan 22nd 2009 4:56AM
Although WG is currently disabled, there was a bug that let one side take control of wintergrasp all day. Needless to say, horde have been raiding non-stop for "free" shards.
Who does blizz favor? -_-
Kylenne Jan 22nd 2009 7:06AM
Blizzard favors no one. As has been plainly stated several times. On my one server, I've been farming shards like whoa inbetween horrendous lag because Horde has had it. On the other server I'm on, Alliance has been stuck with it. It literally comes down to whichever faction on a given server was lucky enough to win before it was shut off.
Jesus, emo kids. Blizzard is not OMG out to get you and/or your faction. Do you really think Ghostcrawler or somebody is looking at dozens of servers going, "okay, Horde/Alliance won, let's turn it off!" Listen to yourselves.
Tridus Jan 22nd 2009 5:47AM
Most likely they're taking a ton of flak for releasing a patch this screwed up, and "are watching closely" because if they screw it up again the higher ups are going to start yelling.
dreadpiraterose Jan 22nd 2009 6:56AM
Wintergrasp is still out of commission on Gnomeregan.
