Blizzard puts advertising on the WoW front page
Bornakk has fessed up to Blizzard's little slip yesterday of letting gold buying ads sneak onto the official forums. As expected, he says it was a complete mistake, and that Blizzard is taking steps to keep it from happening. I'm surprised this isn't the action Blizzard took from the beginning -- when the ads first showed up yesterday, Blizzard's forum moderators were deleting (and presumably banning) anyone who mentioned the ads. But almost all of Blizzard's fansites (and even WoW Insider) have had problems with gold ads appearing in advertising content outside our control, so it doesn't seem like Blizzard need worry about it. Sure, it was a mistake, and sure, it was hilarious, but there was no reason to hide the fact that it had happened -- especially since there were screenshots aplenty right away. However, Blizzard apparently still hasn't learned their lesson: they've now also got external advertisements being served right on the game's front page. These ads are served up by the same company responsible for the ads on the forums, and thus clearly they have the same possible problems -- if one gold ad can appear, more can as well. And while the ad that appeared on the forums was not harmful (other than the fact that it linked to a website that offered a service that would get you banned from the game), anytime you're bringing outside content to your own site, you run that risk. Blizzard has decided to monetize their presence on the web, but it's costing their customers a little bit of security as well.

I think they need to get rid of the ads entirely. I don't need to be sold more stuff. >.

blizzard: hmm, we have 11 million subscribers paying us $15 a month, people buying our in wow changes, and buying up all ticket sales and merchandise....so... lets try to squeeze more money out of their pockets by spamming them with ads!
/sigh greedy company is greedy.

@Kozzom --
You forget there are tons of visitors to the website that aren't paying subscribers. For every 1 WoW player coming to the WoW homepage, I bet you there are 100 who aren't going to pay for a subscription.
Why not let them monetize their home page? IMO its not really being greedy....

Ahh I love uninformed kiddie math...
1: not everyone of those 11mil are paying $15 a month.
2: Subscription fees are not 'all profit'.
3: Blizz has to pay for bandwidth, hardware, software, hosting, and a slew of other things related to the game.
I suggest you stupid kiddies crying OMG GREED learn a thing or three about Businesses and what it takes to operate a game of this magnitude.
And more money for the game means a better game for all of us. Besides, if you're that morally opposed to be advertised to, cancel your game subscription, cancel your cable TV, and close your eyes.

Pyornthe obviously doesn't understand how much bandwidth costs. My meter rates me 9 kb/hr when I'm in a place like 25 man raids or battlegrounds, or Dalaran for that matter. Imagine 12 million other people also doing that, and then try and imagine what that costs. Then let's include the website and forums and armory bandwidth and add that on.
Then, why don't we include hardware? Top of the line hardware that can host thousands of people is pretty expensive. I mean, how often have you seen a link from wowinsider kill a webserver? It happens! Then you have to pay all the employees to work. gm's, developers, backroom techies, and everybody else. It's not exactly cheap. Blizzard isn't making half of much as you think they are.

I can't wait for them to start putting ads in game. You know it's going to happen eventually.
Frijona Jan 23rd 2009 1:06PM
I'm sure this was posted before, but did Blizzard explain their reasoning? I mean, I can't think of anything other than greed.
kolo Jan 23rd 2009 1:08PM
It's nothing to do with greed. Blizz is a business, end of. It is however really stupid that they did not think this problem would occur.
Tidecaller Jan 23rd 2009 1:15PM
Ghostcrawler wears out sixteen keyboards a day. Those suckers aren't cheap!

It has everything to do with greed....

Some corporate suit decided to monetize their X million hits on their website. Doesn't affect the integrity of the game, and brings in cash, so it doesn't move contrary to the ideal of money not influencing design.
Of course, this is some pretty hefty damage to the company image, and its just a matter of time until someone gets some malicious code in one of the ads.
Frijona Jan 23rd 2009 1:21PM
I think it's greed in the way that they are choosing to do something that will irk many of their customers, and potentially cause problems if some malicious code slips in.
Are any WoW players happy about the ads? Either they 1) don't notice, 2) don't care, or 3) are at some level of unhappiness.
So player morale takes a slight dive, but not enough for people to actually quit the game.

Im more worried about the next Key logger/trojan. Pumped out to the unsuspecting masses. Well i guess its one way to boost sales of there Authenticator..
Activision is going to kill Bilzzard..

As said before:
FireFox
-NoScript
-AdBlock Plus
-Remove it Permanently
I know we're discussing the main stream people that access the website though, not really the hardcore followers of wowinsider.

Seconded! Ads are a prime source of malware and there's no reason to let random companies run scripts in your browser.

Don't they make enough money on us as it is?
Liel Jan 23rd 2009 1:14PM
Do you? Do you make enough to make ends meet so your turning down a raise from your employer this year?
Blizzard is not stupid they went a long time with no new games coming out pretty sure they are going to milk this as long as they can.
I also pay for cable television and most channels still have commercials.
Navaar Jan 23rd 2009 1:12PM
See, the thing is that Blizzard used to host their own ads, without a 3rd party handling it. Granted, I can't imagine it was a huge money maker, but they had more control over it.
They are a business, and they are trying to make money. I still believe that the merger with Activision is key to all this happening though. I would hate to see Blizzard put profit over quality. The splitting of Starcraft 2 into three games already irks me. If they are all released at the same time then I will really be upset, because the split wasn't for quality purposes, it was to make more money from fans. Personally I'm hoping to see the games released a few months apart.
Shevaresh Jan 23rd 2009 1:14PM
Business line of thought:
Do we have money? < yes
Can we get more money? < yes
let's do it.
That's the way it HAS to be. As officers in a publicly traded company, it is their responsibility to make as much money as you can without violating legal/business ethics.
Think of it like raiding: They're trying to make progression.

If the recent financial crisis has taught us anything, it is that what is best for making a profit is not always what is best for the people.
