Breakfast Topic: Get off the #%&$#^$ stone!

Now, it's no secret that a select portion of WoW's playerbase is comprised of people whom we might politely term "jerks," and the Naxx summoning stone is an almost unparalleled environment for them to practice their delightful skills. The stone is set on a very small ledge, servicing the summoning needs for a very popular instance, and no matter what the area was bound to be crowded. But the situation's made so much worse by the constant presence of players going /afk on top of the stone while conveniently perched on their largest or otherwise unnecessary mounts.
A number of people are temporarily on flying mounts once summoned because they were already on their way to the instance, and that's perfectly reasonable (the Troll Hunter in the foreground, for example, is one such innocent party). But mammoths? Why are so many people on ground mounts in front of Naxx's summoning stone? Why would you fly up to the stone on a giant dragon and then /afk leaving it endlessly flapping, guaranteeing that summons are 10 times the nuisance they have to be?
I'll tell you why -- to be a giant pain in the ass.
I'll grant that Naxx's entrance was really not designed to handle the level of traffic it typically starts seeing around 7:30 pm server time, and perhaps the stone would be more ideally situated somewhere below -- but there's something in me that rebels at the notion of Blizzard having to design (or re-design) around a lack of common courtesy.
So, "jerks" -- if you were waiting to hear it from someone, if that was indeed your design in parking yourself in an incredibly small area on a very large and/or constantly moving mount -- yes, that is a very pretty dragon and/or mammoth. I admire your skill as a player. I am awed by your ability to grind Sons of Hodir rep, or AoE down Culling of Stratholme, or amass 16,000 gold. We are all humbled by the presence of one so great as yourself, and sincerely grateful that you have chosen to grace us with your imposing and inspiring presence.
Now get the %#$$*# off the stone.

Jeff Jan 23rd 2009 8:20AM
@Lukeyo: Win.
Euphronius Jan 23rd 2009 8:35AM
LOL. Whenever I see a giant tauren onn his Humoungous Impressive War Mammoth parked on the Dalaran flightmaster, its baby spice to the rescue. Nothing more hilarious than seeing him reduced to the size of great dane.
Muse Jan 23rd 2009 8:59AM
...so THAT's what it's for. Now why didn't I think of that?
oldwisemonk Jan 23rd 2009 10:00AM
I always carry Baby Spice for this very reason.
Also ... go up to stone, zoom all the way in, and Presto! There's the stone!
Greenman Jan 23rd 2009 10:24AM
So the patch they need to make is, greatly increase the duration of baby spice. 10 minutes would be nice.
Lukeyo Jan 23rd 2009 10:26AM
We got oldwisemonk in the place who likes it in your face
And as for me, ah you'll see!
Soifra Jan 23rd 2009 11:12AM
I used Baby Spice on the guy riding the mammoth and standing over the Winter Veil presents in IF on December 25th. He shrieked and fussed about it, too, but - FOILED.
Takarakasai Mar 5th 2009 5:04PM
We had a Rogue in our guild go a raound with Baby Spice to all the horde sitting around the stone - they spent the next 5 minutes yelling at us ^_^
On a separate note, what would it take to start a petition that Blizz implament a "No Fly Zone" around the stone? I wouldn't mind loseing the servers for a day or so while they added a Ramp & made it so you auto-dismount after a certain point.
After all, if they can put one in Lagaran for no appairant reason, they can put one there!
Matchu Jan 23rd 2009 8:05AM
Solution: Simply turn the area into an "inside" area so it autodismounts.
Joroy Jan 23rd 2009 8:11AM
Then how would one leave the front door and not fall to their doom?
The stone is always clear on my pvp server. There is so much crap to push or mind control you off the side. It would be dumb to sit up there.
Zerq Jan 23rd 2009 8:12AM
Autodismount? right, so then when I go to leave Naxx i just jump off and fall to my death instead of using my flying mount. ya autodismount is a GREAT idea.
Firegalus Jan 23rd 2009 8:17AM
"Solution: Simply turn the area into an "inside" area so it autodismounts."
what happens when you need to get away from the stone (to repair, etc), you need to mount up to leave the stone..
bad design is the problem, having the summoning stone in a tiny area with 4 entrances.
Would have been better if they had made the stone on the ground underneath Naxx
Jeff Jan 23rd 2009 8:21AM
"bad design is the problem"
Indeed. Make Naxx bigger. Why not? It's certainly bigger on the inside anyway.
SINisterWyvern Jan 23rd 2009 8:23AM
Yes it can autodismount, not the whole thing, but make mounts only available on the actual ledges between the pillars and the problem is solved.
Stop being assholes to the person who said it and actually THINK a little bit for yourselves as I just did and you won't look like morons.
rosencratz Jan 23rd 2009 8:30AM
They'renot being assholes, they're all right topoint the problems out. There are dozens of issues with an auto dismounting zone, especially a very small one, especially when putting the stone elsewhere is a good solution and especially considering it wouldn't be a problem if it weren't for jerks.
Just imagine the complains of people who suffer just a brief lagspike who "auto-dismounted" too early/late and died, Woot, that'll be fun, asking people to stand right on the ledges? From experience Latency+ledge walking = masses of complaints... Just look to eye of the storm.
There are, quite simply, better solutions to this problem than coding in a special dismount zone for the sake of a few jerks. Some solutions are in the power of the players.... bring a warlock, get off your collective-guild butts and be ready for the raid in advance or be prepared to make the very short flight from Dalaran if it's that stressful.
havitech Jan 23rd 2009 8:31AM
What SINisterWyvern said. Some people are so quick to dismiss a simple idea because they'll be damned if they're going to spend more than 1 second processing it.
Just to be perfectly clear: The immediate area around the stone should dismount players. A little farther out, there could be enough room to step on and mount up.
Calaana Jan 23rd 2009 8:57AM
No no, I think fall to the doom is pretty good.
So long as they add a "Leaving group whilst inside naxxramas will port you to the graveyard." feature, mention it in the patch notes, all the idiots that cause the problem won't know what's going on.. and we all get hours of entertainment.
Sometimes being a jerk is part of natural selection.
Jorge Jan 23rd 2009 9:01AM
That would work, but only to a certain extent. Many mounts are so big that they would cover the stone area anyway. There's not enough room in there, simply as that.
IMO they should put the stone on the ground below Naxx, like the stone for the Temptest Keep Dungeons.
