Breakfast Topic: Get off the #%&$#^$ stone!

Now, it's no secret that a select portion of WoW's playerbase is comprised of people whom we might politely term "jerks," and the Naxx summoning stone is an almost unparalleled environment for them to practice their delightful skills. The stone is set on a very small ledge, servicing the summoning needs for a very popular instance, and no matter what the area was bound to be crowded. But the situation's made so much worse by the constant presence of players going /afk on top of the stone while conveniently perched on their largest or otherwise unnecessary mounts.
A number of people are temporarily on flying mounts once summoned because they were already on their way to the instance, and that's perfectly reasonable (the Troll Hunter in the foreground, for example, is one such innocent party). But mammoths? Why are so many people on ground mounts in front of Naxx's summoning stone? Why would you fly up to the stone on a giant dragon and then /afk leaving it endlessly flapping, guaranteeing that summons are 10 times the nuisance they have to be?
I'll tell you why -- to be a giant pain in the ass.
I'll grant that Naxx's entrance was really not designed to handle the level of traffic it typically starts seeing around 7:30 pm server time, and perhaps the stone would be more ideally situated somewhere below -- but there's something in me that rebels at the notion of Blizzard having to design (or re-design) around a lack of common courtesy.
So, "jerks" -- if you were waiting to hear it from someone, if that was indeed your design in parking yourself in an incredibly small area on a very large and/or constantly moving mount -- yes, that is a very pretty dragon and/or mammoth. I admire your skill as a player. I am awed by your ability to grind Sons of Hodir rep, or AoE down Culling of Stratholme, or amass 16,000 gold. We are all humbled by the presence of one so great as yourself, and sincerely grateful that you have chosen to grace us with your imposing and inspiring presence.
Now get the %#$$*# off the stone.

I'm tired. What I actually meant was a viable solution was the whole "you have entered a no-flying zone" thing, I guess a straight autodismount would annoy some people (though you people with your huge-ass mounts deserve to fall).
Adam Jan 23rd 2009 10:03AM
As a Druid I'd be fine with it being an auto-dismount area. ;)
Deadly. Off. Topic. Jan 23rd 2009 10:15AM
There's enough space in there so that you can mount on the sides and auto dismount near the stone (something they should impliment btw). Only an idiot who is aware of his lag would be stupid enough to rush to the side.
And the one who is not, well lag happens and you should have expected that possiblity given the current state of the realms right now... you lived with it before, live with it again.

They should just make it like Dalaran. You can mount and 'get off the platform' but if you stay on the platform, it would kick you off your mount, like flying over dalaran or WG does.
easy peazy.

Auto-dismount could work. They just have to move naxx a little to the east, so that it's over water. Then even non priest/mage/druids could fall safely. :-)
It makes sense also, because necropolises are clearly mobile and even the undead can appreciate the beautiful view of a river during sunset.

whee! autodismount! then watch the newly awesome buffed elemental shamans knocking people off with thunderstorm on pvp servers!!
Zali Jan 23rd 2009 1:23PM
Matchu- Haha, I was thinking the same thing... then saw everyone flaming you. You must be a druid. Instant Cast Swift Flight form FTW!!!
As far as crowding around the stone... well this isn't a problem on a PVP server. On Ravenholdt, it seems at times that the Naxx summoning area has more or less become an official battleground. It isn't uncommon to see a post announcing that we now have the Naxx Stone. I've never seen it void of players, one faction or another is constantly there ganking anyone too slow to make it into the instance. Beware the Death Knight!!! Of course, since there are more Belf Ret Pallies than there are Alliance on my server, you can guess how often we get to use the summoning stone.... in fact, I don't think I have ever been summoned to Naxx by anything other than one of our warlocks.

This has been an issue for a very long time. Its a design flaw that blizzard once said it would fix by putting things up off the ground but they never did.
Zerq Jan 23rd 2009 8:09AM
LMFAO!! its about time someone else besides me complained about this. Great read
Gilgamesh Jan 23rd 2009 8:09AM
You know whats even worse?
Stonebushers....
Basically they hide behind/fly relatively high above the Summon stone waiting for you to walk up to it then they come around/drop down and gank you mid summon usaully with stunlocks thank god blizzard gave rogues stealth
Zizzy Jan 23rd 2009 8:10AM
I would also like to expand this to flight masters, AH personnel, etc...
jerks
Faelista Jan 23rd 2009 9:26AM
...mailboxes, BG vendors....
Gimmlette Jan 23rd 2009 11:22AM
Didn't Blizzard add to pole to the mailboxes so you had something to click on when the masses accumulated around it? Or was that pole always there and I never noticed it before?
That being said, I was in IF on my gnome trying to send materials and there were 2 mammoths around the mailbox. When you are trying to send something and getting more and more frustrated, it's easy to forget there are three additional mailboxes in IF, one over by the tavern, one by the tram entrance and the other in the Military Wing. While not "convenient" to the AH/bank run you're probably making, the one in the Military Wing is rarely used.
The experience did give me a reason to issue my very first "executive order" in the 13 months my guild has been in existence. Any guild member caught covering the mailbox, meeting stone, auctioneer, quest giver or flight master with a mount will receive a private reprimand. And before you all go, "Ooooh, she's mean. I'm quaking in my boots," I reminded guild members that this is just plain rude and you have no excuse for doing it. If you have to go afk at any one of these places, back out of the way.
Thanks for giving vent to a pet peeve I hear a number of people express on a somewhat daily basis.

I had particular fun camped out on top off the AV battlemaster in Shattrath on my Veridian Nether Drake back in the day. There was plenty of NPC model area left exposed for them to access; they just had to aim right.

Please kindly remove yourself from society, we don't want you anymore. Take your friends with you. Thank you.
jbodar Jan 23rd 2009 7:07PM
Congrats. No one cares that your parents didn't love you enough. Go get some therapy and leave the rest of us alone.
Mj Jan 23rd 2009 8:13AM
It would help if there was an "always reachable" repair nearby. Some of our guildies never quested around there, and are unable to repair nearby - so the mammoth with the repair guy gets put up (usually close to the edge tho) so that we can repair after wiping 6 times because we lost our tank/healer/dps to lag.
But yeah, people are rude, and since summoning in the instance is currently broken (2 minutes between summons) you can't just summon the lock and run in either.
Hurry blizzard - fix it.
Muse Jan 23rd 2009 9:24AM
The quest takes like 5-10 minutes. If you're going to be raiding, that's like a blink of an eye when it comes to time spent preparing.
