How have the role forums shaped up?

I genuinely like the Tanking forums. Many of the people posting are sincerely helpful, and take the time to answer questions posed by people new to the job and nervous about their performance. There have also been a number of interesting threads sparked by changes to general tanking practices, what tanks hate most, the ongoing debate concerning Blessing of Sanctuary and Druid AoE threat, Warrior viability on a 3D Sartharion, and concerns over Death Knight tanking weapons. The forum is usually a pleasure to read even if a few threads are kind of off-base, and I think the back-and-forth between four different tanking classes serves to take the edge off concerns that players might otherwise have been convinced were unique to their class (which, let's be honest, is probably one of the effects Blizzard wanted).
I don't spend as much time on the Damage Dealing and Healing forums because my main spends most of her time tanking, and things are a little more volatile over there (mostly because of current PvP concerns). Were the role forums ultimately a good idea? Are they -- shall we say -- working as intended?

I think the role forums are fine for covering certain things, but they most certainly make other conversations much more difficult. I don't want to ask every rogue, lock, dk, ect if they put 2/3 or 3/3 points in eclipse. There is a reason most fan sites still maintain a class structure because it generally promotes better conversation for the given classes.
At least role forums do get rid of the "GTFO (My class) forum" attitude so prevalent with class forums. At least people aren't ganged up on for disagreeing with the general opinion felt by a class.

They should just rename the Damage Dealing forums the "whining about PvP" forums. That way at least half the threads there would be properly located.
Peeev Jan 23rd 2009 11:17AM
More like whine about anything, PVP and Dev QA forums.
Thats completly ghostrcrawlers fault by the way, for posting so much there and ignoring the other forums.
I admit it, if theres something I want to let devs know or maybe I want to troll them I post there.

The dps forum are about about 90% worthless.
Quite a bit of it revolves around pvp flaming, but what would you expect?
Taken in comparison to other public forums, they aren't unbearably terrible though, just terrible.
SINisterWyvern Jan 23rd 2009 11:30AM
Well then maybe there should be a pvp... oh wait http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/board.html?forumId=11117&sid=1
They should just move or delete all pvp related threads from dps to this one. Maybe people will get the idea.

Last I checked there is a dedicated PvE forum too for Dungeons and Raids, which means that the Damage-dealing forums should be reserved for... DPS on targeting dummies and leveling content?
"If you want to discuss class balance in PvE or PvP, this is a great place to do it." -GC, sticky on the damage dealing forums

I don't know why role forums actually exist at wow-europe.com. There is no dev attention to these anyway. There is actually hardly *any* Blizzard attention to Europian forums

The healer forum is sometimes quite good, and other times "lol only bads use (some spell" type idiocy. Seems to depend on the subject.
Thauron Jan 23rd 2009 11:46AM
I think it depends on the community involved, because the role forums have evidently been hit and miss.
The Tanking forum is an undeniable success. It's one of two forums that I've seen so far (the other being the old "Welcome to WoW" forum) which are almost always sane and have constructive threads. On the plus side, this one also caters to the more technical aspects of the game.
Tanks as a whole are a good crowd, and seem eager to help each other. There seems to be some kind of implied and automatic respect. Heck, they'll even admit their own mistakes (for example, pally tanks forgetting to put righteous fury up after a wipe)... and joke about it. No name calling, just joking about the fact everyone makes mistakes.
The DD forum is a mess, and why are half the threads pertaining to PvP? DPSers have always had a bit of a pissing contest between themselves, constantly posting damage meters and such. They closely resemble the class forums I think, which is not really a good thing.
I haven't bothered to decipher the healing forums, but things seem to fall somwhere in between based on a first glance.
Definitely hit and miss, though I'm enjoying the benefits of the tanking forum. Very wise and helpful.

Sigh to all the idiots who comlain about dev attention: they read all posts, just because they don't post in your threads doesnt mean you didn't have a good idea or they ignored it.
With that being said, I still hate the f*ck out of the Damage Dealing forum. Ive never seen a constructive thread there.

Well how does that help us? Us over in Europe? Or anyone, really? If we don't get feedback on our feedback, how are we supposed to know if we should keep reporting on some subject or to ignore it?
We don't need in-depth information, just something to tell us if we're right in our claims/discussions or not.

The role forums, at least for DPS and Healing, would probably be better off if PvP was considered offtopic for them.
Let's be honest, PvPers and PvEers more often than not, don't care about the other, as long as their needs get met.
Eisengel Jan 23rd 2009 3:52PM
The game balance and concerns between PvP and PvE are also very, very different. Discussing the issues pertaining to either in the same place is a good way to make things explode.
I'd say that PvP/PvE mixing is a good way to make the forums less useful. Is there any way to tank in PvP? Not really... unless you talk about tanking the Alterac Valley generals, which is pretty much a simple tank n' spank... so tanking forms should have very little PvP impact. Healing forums probably have a fair amount of PvP QQ. Healing in PvP has always been a touchy thing, and there is probably a lot of discussion about Arena healing. I'd say Damage dealing forums are likely the hardest hit by derailing PvP discussion... especially this being the season of burst matches. Based on this I'd expect the tanking forums to be the most focused and courteous, the healing to be a little less so, and the damage forums to be a complete explosion.
Adam Jan 23rd 2009 11:58AM
I spend most of my time on the Healing forums (being of Resto Druid persuasion) and honestly it's mostly complaining. There's the occassional good thread but those are rare. It's mainly priests complaining about not having a defined role as a healer, or the CoH nerf, or other healers complaining about PvP viability (with so many classes having anti-healer abilities and huge burst damage), or any healer complaining that another healer has a certain ability, etc, etc.
It really depresses me sometimes because all those QQ threads make it seem much worse than it really is.
Eugene Jan 23rd 2009 12:04PM
But yes, I agree completely about the condition of the DPS forums. I think it goes to show the differences in the average mindset and maturity level of a DPS class vs a tank
(of course I'm saying this as a Retpally myself)

They suck, you can't find anything constructive, there is absolutely no organization and every other post title starts with -GC, Ghostcrawler, or Blizzard. It's like barrens chat migrated to the forums. Everytime I dare to venture there I get this urg to make a most asking where Mandrak's Wife is.
Creid Jan 23rd 2009 12:06PM
The only thing that really annoys me is that European players don't get a say in how their class will develop. Sure there are European Role forums, but there's hardly ever a blue post in them and the ones that are posted there are simple copy pastes from the US forums.
Nothings more annoying that reading the US forums and not being able to reply without having an account.
Cy Jan 24th 2009 12:30AM
Why do you believe you don't get a say in things? Just because you don't get a blue post from a dev on your threads doesn't mean they don't get read or taken into consideration. I understand that it feels like you don't get a say in things, but your reasoning is lacking logic.
The only real difference between the EU and US forums is Ghostcrawler, and he is just one person. It's not like the entire dev team is here asking the US players for opinions and interacting with them every day.
