Insider Trader: Twink gathering controversy, updated
Insider Trader is your inside line on making, selling, buying and using player-made products.
Back in patch 3.0.3, you might have missed one of the changes. This one line in the patch notes informed us that leveling requirements to train gathering professions had been removed. The reasoning seemed to be that they are self-restricted, as you can't exactly go romping around Northrend at level 15.
The problem with this logic is that you can, in fact, with some help, and this change definitely did not go unnoticed in the twink community. With a little patience and some dedicated high level friends, you too could become a level 19 PvP terror with two of the following buffs; 32 critical strike rating, 500 stamina, and/or an instant cast self-heal for 2000 health over 5 seconds every 3 minutes.
The critical strike buff would vary depending on your class, but as an example, a level 19 rogue would gain 10.8% critical strike chance.
Understandably, some members of the twink community are none too happy about this development, and would like to see it corrected.
Many twinks may not have access to high level players willing to spend hours and hours over the course of several days to painstakingly escort a level 15-19 through all of Azeroth, Outland and much of Northrend seeking nodes and killing beasts.
The twink would need to have some leveling room as well. The odd monster might accidentally get tagged, even with a friend or two out of party trying to catch them all ahead. In addition, all of that experience from exploration is going to add up!
This has two unpleasant consequences:
According to a recent survey of the twink community, the level 19 bracket is indeed the most popular, and although over 50% claimed that they are happy with the way Blizzard treats them, 36% of the community said that they would definitely leave the game if they could no longer play their twinks, and another 30% said that they'd consider it.
When asked if they would re-roll their character if they had to in order to make it better, only 34% of the community surveyed clearly indicated that they would.
Of course, not all of the community is taking this change so seriously. Some players feel that if you can really get yourself maxed-out gathering professions at level 19, then you deserve the leg up, and this has some merit. In fact, it could be argued that this adds to the experience by giving players more to do, figure out, and achieve.
People have already been writing guides and filling them with tips about how to hit 450 in less time, or how to do it with minimal experience gain, even from exploration.
Twinking has actually long been tied to crafting professions, and Engineering and Fishing have been popular methods of acquiring gear and toys.
Other players, who have bothered to do all of the work to reach 450 on their twinks, would actually like to see Blizzard put things back the way they were, citing that it really is too much trouble to go to for each of their twinks, including new toons, to become viable.
If Blizzard were to reinstate the level caps, there could be even more uproar than there currently is. Would it be fair to all of the twinks who did put in the work, perhaps on multiple characters, to have that reversed? If it was not reversed, would it be fair to every other twink who will never be able to get them?
Such a change would not merely affect the twink community, either. Many players who like to explore, love to gather, and just tend to be ahead of the pack, don't deserve to have their work undone.
If Blizz chooses not to change the situation, twinks may just have to adapt, as many already are. There are many resources, as mentioned above, to help twinks out in the gathering profession department, and there is potential for fun to be had.
As with anything that Blizzard does, or does not do, some players are always going to pop up and cry conspiracy. Blizzard clearly hates you twinks, and they're just jealous that you keep finding ways to beat them at their own game, right?
Not on your life. Blizz actually supports the art of twinkage, and strives to keep it fair. They also add things in-game that specifically include twinks, creating new challenges and goals for players.
Angrenous of Shadow Council, featured in 15 Minutes of Fame, agreed with Drysc that part of the allure of twinking is puzzling out how to thrive in restricted conditions. He also noted that the level 19 bracket in particular has a draw partly because it is the most restricted. There are fewer abilities, few gear options, and you can start up a new character in much less time than you could create a level 80 PvP force.
The gathering profession buffs could be seen as simply another opportunity under constraint. Difficult to obtain, but highly rewarding, they might even warrant a change to a new class or new build. Toughness, for example, now grants stamina instead of hit points. Anyone with enough Mining skill might want to focus on talents that use their stamina in order to calculate an increase to stats and abilities, including more stamina.
A twink that bothers to level their Skinning might switch to a more crit-based spec, and in fact, switching to toons that have either critical strike or stamina talents available to a level 19, which would mean within the first two tiers of their trees, might offer a chance to try something new, and really take advantage of these abilities.
How do you feel about the situation as it is? How is it affecting you, your friends, and your enjoyment of the game? Have you taken advantage of it, or are you feeling left behind?
Update: It seems that Blizz did in fact replace the level caps for gathering professions in the latest patch, 3.0.8, although the change isn't in the patch notes. They chose to allow anyone who had already achieved a professions level higher than their current level cap to keep it, and their buff. This effectively means that no one else can ever get it without leveling out of their twink bracket, perhaps significantly.
As discussed above, this type of move seems to be fair to some people, but not for others. What would you like to see happen?

This has two unpleasant consequences:
- Twinks who do not have such friends will not be able to gain these buffs.
- Well-established twinks, who are already level 19 and could not explore much more without leveling, are out of luck. They could level and aim for the 29 bracket, which is not as popular. It would also undo all of the l33t gear, enchants and toys that they have spent a great deal of time and money acquiring. Alternatively, they could re-roll another twink, which not only would undo all of the above, but would force them to give up all of their hard-earned PvP stats and achievements. This is not really a viable option for many twinks.
According to a recent survey of the twink community, the level 19 bracket is indeed the most popular, and although over 50% claimed that they are happy with the way Blizzard treats them, 36% of the community said that they would definitely leave the game if they could no longer play their twinks, and another 30% said that they'd consider it.

LOL at twinks who complain that the new stuff means people rise to the top not because of skill alone. Now they know how the non-twinked 19s feel.
It must really suck for them to have to play against people better geared than themselves. Hypocrites.
Glad to hear that at least not all twinks think that way.
Richard Jan 23rd 2009 5:22PM
Exactly. I almost spit out my drink when I read, "All of a sudden, people are rising to the top not because of skill alone." All of the sudden? That's what being a twink is all about!
Xeren Jan 23rd 2009 5:34PM
Finally! Some like minded people!
Twinking has always been about gaining an unfair advantage.
Blizz, bring in temporary, standardized armor on a purchasable point system for BG's and arenas, to even the odds so that the more skillful person, not the one with the most free time/gold, will win, and I will THINK about getting back into PvP.
Deadlock Jan 23rd 2009 5:36PM
Agreed completely.
What's next, Gold Farmers complaining about the report spam feature?
Add XP to BGs and screw the cheaters over completely.
Valhalla Jan 23rd 2009 6:01PM
You mean gearing yourself to beat other people of your level is an "unfair advantage?" I thought getting the best gear is what WoW is about.
A lot of you people have pretty nasty attitudes when it comes to twinking. I wonder why?
Valhalla Jan 23rd 2009 6:11PM
BTW, can anyone at WoWinsider read? This article is completely incorrect. The thread was complaining that Blizzard removed the gathering cap and then put it back on, and the twinks that leveled gathering to 450 aren't getting their stat bonuses taken away.
This did create a huge unfair advantage for both twinks and non-twinks in battlegrounds, seeing as they have huge buffs that no one else can get.
Ikarus Jan 23rd 2009 6:20PM
This isn't probably going to be a very popular comment but.... There is a whole lot of ignorance flying around in these comments. Unless you've played a twink, any guesses at their motivation is pure speculation.
I recently finished a lvl 29 twink lock. If anyone took the time to check out some of the battlegroup forums you notice that twinking isn't about "pwning nubs" I've yet to see a post from say a 29 hunter with 4k health and all the gear and enchants get on the forums and brag about how that wasted a lvl 25 mages with 500 hp. The fun is in facing each other. The get in the BG's and face off them jump on the forums to critique each other.
It's no different from end game PvP. you make the best toon you can, get the best gear, the best enchants so you can kick ass. The people shooting down twinks but giving endgame PvP a pass are being hypocritical. fresh lvl capped toons will get stomped by hardcore PvP'ers who have the most recent PvP gear with all the enchants. It's no different.
I got rolled by twinks on my first toons in early PvP. My goal now, as a twink is to be an equalizing force. I specifically target other twinks. I've walked right by clearly untwinked toon several times going for other targets. If they attack me, I'll fight back.
Ikarus Jan 23rd 2009 6:21PM
btw, that is an epic picture. I laughed out loud :)
Xeren Jan 23rd 2009 6:46PM
sorry, meant to post this as a reply, not a new comment. here it is again:
"You mean gearing yourself to beat other people of your level is an "unfair advantage?" I thought getting the best gear is what WoW is about."
haha, no, it's really, really not.
so, as long as the people are of the same level, the playing field is level? your comments don't make sense on a very fundamental level. you can't talk about ""gearing yourself" (the act of obtaining better gear than someone else) and then say it's not unbalanced
Xeren Jan 23rd 2009 7:07PM
Ikarus, you are one of the "good ones". But i've played too many BG's in the past to believe that all twinks are like you. Most just like being more powerful than others so they can feel awesome for pressing 1,2,2,2,2.
I won't lie, I was one of them for a while. I twinked a lock in the 39 bracket, and, for a bit, it was FUN. But after a couple weeks, i relaize the fun was coming from feeling powerful, not from overcoming a difficult opponent by being more skillful than them. It was an empty victory. Eventually, I just felt bad- the non-twinks never even had a chance. I retired my twink and haven't been back since.
Ikarus, I think you would agree with me too, since you try to go after other twinks- if everyone was twinked, it would be more fun. And the reason it would be fun is because it would come down to skill, and not gear level. But the fact that not everyone is twinked makes the PvP game fundamentally unbalanced, and (for both of us) less fun than it could be.

@Valhalla
Wow, you're absolutely right. This article is incorrect (or I misread it) and m0st of the people posting are misinformed on the actual events. You just saved me some time too, because I was about to go level my twink's professions, but it would be useless as only the ones who got the OP traits before the fix are allowed to use them.

Valhalla said:
»You mean gearing yourself to beat other people of your level is an "unfair advantage?" I thought getting the best gear is what WoW is about.«
It is. But that doesn't make it fair.
If there was no way to send gold or items between characters, it would be much more fair. Then each character would be gearing themselves.
As it is, a twink is the WoW equivalent of someone going to the very best college, wearing the finest clothes, driving the fastest cars and going to the most exclusive parties... Not because of hard work, but simply because their parents happen to be rich.
Twinks purchase gear for gold earned by other characters.
»A lot of you people have pretty nasty attitudes when it comes to twinking. I wonder why?«
Because you never stand a chance against them in 1v1. - Even if your skills are better. If you haven't spent the gold on gear, you don't stand a chance.
It's like entering an ironman contest, where some of the contestants have speedboats and motorcycles. You don't stand a chance.

Valhalla Jan 24th 2009 11:41AM
@Zaniac:
You imply that twinks are wrong because they didn't earn their gear.
I didn't buy the gold from gold farmers. I earned it on my 70 by farming Primals for hours. (before there were as many dailies as there were now)
I also farmed instances over and over. But that didn't take any work at all right?
BTW, I love the arguing with crappy metaphors. Let's not talk about WoW, but something completely irrelevant instead. WoW is about having good gear. If someone has spent the time and gold for better gear, they should beat you. Get the tears out of your eyes and maybe you'll be able to see that.
obo Jan 24th 2009 5:10PM
@Valhalla: The problem people have with twinks isn't twinking. It's how most of them have your personality, how few of them have Ikarus', and how maybe a tenth of those like Ikarus play with their team with winning BGs as their goal, and not racking up kills/honor for their own gear.
valhalla Jan 25th 2009 3:55AM
@Obo:
Are you serious? Read through this comment section and count up all the non-twinks trashtalking.
If having a bad attitude is banworthy you guys have earned the gold medal.
Putts Jan 23rd 2009 5:11PM
500 stamina? Yeah I can imagine that being pretty OP for a twink.
Manatank Jan 23rd 2009 5:14PM
500 stamina would be pretty OP at level 80. 450 mining gives 50 stamina.
Mpmagi Jan 23rd 2009 5:11PM
Twinks need to stop whining. You choose to stay at a certain level. No one is saying you have to level these professions.
Hendrata Jan 23rd 2009 5:13PM
I find this controversy ridiculous and ironic.
The existence of twinks are ridiculous to begin with. Why are you so proud of being so leet in BGs simply because you have level 60 enchants on? That's not skill, that's just gold, that just means you have a high level main.
And now Blizz gives new options to out-twinks the twinks, and the old twinks suddenly cry: wahhhhh I can't gather without leveling, wahhhhh I can't own every single BG and feel superior to normal level 19s anymore
Seriously, the removal of level cap is logical, and twinks who protest need to shut up and think why the twink to begin with. Roll a new twink, go to a higher bracket, whatever, if you're really skilled, you can succeed there too. Heck if you're really skilled, why not try level 80 bracket?
