On lag and communication: Two interrelated issues
On Thursday, January 8th Nethaera sent out a memo to all the fan sites asking them to announce it, and Eyonix posted on the forums for all the rest of us. Latency and connectivity issues will be fixed in patch 3.0.8. The crowds cheered, babies cried in joy, and dog and cats started to live together. The world would be right again.Fast forward 15 days later.
The high latency while raiding places like Naxxramas and Malygos is still there. The servers are still packed with queue. The patch was a near disaster. And we're still getting bug reports in every 10 minutes, both in comments and via our tip-line.
Many people want to know why this hasn't been fixed. People are out looking for blood. The whole head on a pike sort of thing.
A better way to approach the situation is to try to come up with contingency plans and other activities to do. If Blizzard cannot get their servers to work, to the point that many consider the game playable, then people will need to focus on other aspects of the game or try to work around the problematic parts.
On the couple servers I play on many of the top guilds have decided to stop raiding for the night if there are any problems with high latency in the raid instances. On Alex's server people raid only for a couple hours after 10pm when the queues and population have dropped off. And still other guilds I know have just said forget it completely and are on hiatus until these issues are fixed.
For me, the latency has encouraged me to pickup my alts and start to power level them through Outland / Northrend. I'm doing about a level every other day for a few alts. It's not particularly hard either, with the rest bonus and how easy it is to get through 58 to 70 now.
However for many the latency and continuous issues present in the game are getting to a point beyond annoying. The lack of communication from Blizzard isn't helping much either. While Ghostcrawler has been very forthcoming about the problems that exist in his department (game design and internal game mechanics), there has been a serious lack of communication from the rest of Blizzard on the other issues.
The communication that I believe we are all looking for goes beyond just the announcements and platitudes about the servers being down for maintenance. The communication I believe we need is something more. Let me pretend I'm Blizzard for a moment. I'll put on my blue makeup, crack my role playing fingers, and write what I think would be good communication from the blues (I give props to Kevin Smith and his constant role playing on Smodcast for this idea):
Dear community,
We've recently found ourselves facing serious latency, connectivity, and in-game problems. This is an unfortunate and very frustrating situation for all of us. We are working day and night to solve these problems, and ask that you are patient while we undertake the development and testing that will be necessary to fix the multitude of issues present.
We are all players too. We go home after work to play the game only to be greeted by hour queues and endless lag as we try to conquer Naxxramas and Malygos. We hate that. Nothing is more disappointing for us in-game than to have to call a raid because the severs are not working. We're there. We understand where you're coming from. We hear you loud and clear.
While we can't promise you a timeframe for the fix to this, we can promise you that everyone in the company is dedicated to bringing you the best experience possible in game. Fixing these things is all we're talking about at work, it's all we're focused on at the moment.
In our years as a company we've grown from a small organization to one of the largest gaming companies in the world. And while we've added countless numbers of personnel to our ranks, and spend millions of dollars developing products, the one thing that has remained consistent is our unending devotion to bring to you a good game to play.
We still have that devotion, and we still want to deliver to you a great time. We ask for your support as we work to make this a reality again.
Sincerely,
Blizzard.

Okay, now wouldn't that be a bit of better communication than:
" We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve these issues." (source)
Now I've worked high up in a company where communication had to be precise and well thought out, even ran by lawyers to make sure we weren't going to get ourselves in trouble. There is no doubt that a statement like the one I RP-ed would take a day to produce. But in the end it would provide something much better, much more personal, and much more understandable than the current dogma that is coming out of the mouths of the majority of the blues.
No one is asking for the world here. All people want to know is when, and what, is being done to fix this.
I have gotten to know some of the people at Blizzard, both directly and through reporting on what they say. I know that they are good and dedicated individuals. But someone over there needs to come out and start talking with everyone honestly about what is going on and what they are doing to fix it. All this QQ is getting a bit much, and everyone just wants to get back to playing the game and enjoying this great social environment again.

What?
This is totally an excellent, hard-hitting piece of investigative journalism.
Oh wait... no it's not. Adam is just being a Blizzard apologist.

GTFO high pop. servers if you hate lag. It isn't that complicated... I've been on two med. pop. servers over WOTLK and experience lag on RARE occasions. It is $25 dollars to transfer so I'm sure anyone who isn't a lazy bastard can afford it.
Ted Jan 23rd 2009 6:05PM
Move to a new server you say? You're a genius!
First of all most players won't ever even experience this lag unless they try and do a 25man raid. It has only recently (since 3.0.8) spilled out into the outdoor zones. So in all likelihood your little noob hunter trying to find mankrik's wife in the barrens never feels the pain.
Second, this isn't affecting all servers. Someone on wow forums did a rough estimate based on requested lag responses in this thread: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=14318941110&sid=1 ... there are something like 94 servers that apparently are experiencing no issues. That's 94 out of what... 300? So maybe you're just a lucky dumbass.
Third, I did transfer (along with my guild) from a server that was so bad that the instance servers would lag so hard they would lock up our toons for hours (as in, log in the next day to get them back... in weird places like Elwynn Forest). Guess how the new super low population transfer only server is? JUST AS BAD.
Thanks for the tip though. ;)

I don't really understand the patronizing "this is what Blizzard should say" posts... yes, in a utopian world, this is how all things should be handled, but if we already know how it should be handled, why do we want to hear it from ourselves? :P
Arcaria Jan 23rd 2009 3:31PM
Agree...Of course, there's no way to know that an article on insider is going to suck before we read it but if there was a way to go back 2 minutes in time knowing what we know now, I'd have just kept on browsing.

Because for all the things Blizzard is great at, they are still lacking in customer service. This extends beyond the current lag an down servers.
They seem to only really recently refined thehack issue and even though they have worked to make the overallprocess better they still felt the need to post in game when you log on that they still recommend an authenticator. If the system is inherently broken, then is charging you another 7 bucks the answer?
If they were that concerned with account security, why didn't they throw an authenticator in every box of Lich? I'm digressing, but the overall point is that Blizzard is sometimes lacking in customer service. They are often allowed this lackluster approach because their products are of such high quality. Lich, though high in quality, is lacking with regard to product performance (that being gameplay).
Let's give the guys at Blizzard some credit, they are great computer guys and obviously good at what they do, and some might even say great, but they could use a little help in the PR department, why not let Adam help them a little?
Clevins Jan 23rd 2009 4:02PM
There's nothing utopian about the post. It's merely good business. Blizzard's communication has mostly been poor (GC excepted) and there's really not an excuse for it because fixing it and communicating well isn't hard.
What has people frustrated is two-fold though - the promise to fix the lag and the fact that more than 2 months later the lag is as bad as ever. The lack of communication just makes it annoying because we don't know what's happening.
To everyone dismissing this, think about it this way - what if the thing you wanted to do ingame wasn't possible because the game was unplayable in some way? I don't WANT to level an alt, play the AH, quest, etc... I'm at the point where most of my playtime is in raids. if I can't do that, I don't log in. I'm OK with that, but it starts to hurt guilds because people drift away and then you need tp pull everyone back, get them scheduled, etc etc.
I'm as patient as the next person, and if this were a week or 2 after release, meh. But 2 months? Really? At what point IS it unacceptable for Blizzard to just punt on this? And if they're feverishly working, why not tell us that and give us occasional updates (we think we've got a fix, hit the PTR, we're deploying part 1 of a 3 part fix with the next maintenance, etc).
Sorry, but this isn't 20 years ago - communication and transparency are expected and it seems Morhaime et al haven't got the memo... the 'when it's ready' stuff isn't cute anymore... it's tiresome and reflective of a top down mentality that doesn't work, esp when you say that and then put out something that obviously wasn't ready.
Adam Holisky Jan 23rd 2009 4:10PM
@Clevins:
I agree mostly.
However it's my understanding that Morhaime is a really nice guy, and truly wants the best for his customers. When I put on my RP hat, I more or less pretended I was him. I have heard dozens of stories of players and other people taking issues to him that he didn't know about and the issues becoming solved quickly thereafter.
I think, though none of us can be sure, that the problem resides somewhere in the middle management. Still a top-down problem, but not at the very top from my understanding of the company.
Clevins Jan 23rd 2009 4:16PM
@adam... it's still his responsibility. If I'm the CEO and my customers can't do one of the major activities in my product 2 months post-ship I'm very actively pushing it to be resolved and the I want to know why this was allowed to happen and what's being done to make sure it doesn't happen again.
If there's poor communications and Morhaime wants it to be different it could be... he's the CEO. He can set policy and if people fail to do a good enough job executing it he can fire them. There's simply no way he wants much more interactive communication and it's not happening.
Adam Holisky Jan 23rd 2009 4:22PM
@Clevins
Oh, most definitely. The CEO is always responsible for his company. I've contemplated asking directly if he's aware of the issues going on, and what he's doing about it. But I doubt we'd get anywhere with Blizzard PR. They are *extremely* closed-lip on all this (whether or not that is a good/acceptable thing I'll leave open for discussion).
Clevins Jan 23rd 2009 5:47PM
"They are *extremely* closed-lip on all this (whether or not that is a good/acceptable thing I'll leave open for discussion)."
And, again, that's a directive, implicit or explicit, from Morhaime and the sr management team. It's not like the PR folk are clamming up but the senior management team is all about talking transparently about what's up in Blizzard.
Whether Mike's a nice guy or not isn't the issue... and I don't actually care. But if he is, it doesn't excuse the lack of communication.
stephanie Jan 23rd 2009 3:11PM
I'm not sure if I'm just really lucky or what, but I never have queues on my server, nor have I had ANY issues with the patch....
Laynne Jan 23rd 2009 3:35PM
I'm with you stephanie. The only queues I see are on Sunday evenings, and even then they aren't that high. I haven't had any bad lag that didn't go away within a short time frame (I think it was my ISP), and the only thing from this patch that affected me was the Wintergrasp bug (both getting kick off every 15 minutes on Tuesday night and not being able to play it), which I'm not really upset about. Not sure if it's luck or what, but I haven't really been affected.
*knock on wood*
FireStar Jan 23rd 2009 3:54PM
Last night i was healing a 10 man OS, and heard over vent "ok we're pulling". On my screen no one was moving. The next frame that updated from the server we were attacking 4 dragons and every dps was at half health. I've never had issues like this before this week. I'm glad that not everyone is affected though.
Paggos Jan 23rd 2009 3:11PM
Account canceled.
Please, fix the lag, and I'll return. I can understand bugs, but promising *less* lag in 3.0.8, and having everything lag *even* more instead is pointless. Time to check out WAR I guess..
And no, you can't have my stuff.
Nachoes Jan 23rd 2009 3:24PM
I basically did the same thing. Except for the part about coming back ... not sure I want to after 2 months of constant lags.
Max Jan 23rd 2009 4:15PM
roll low pop
it's nice over here
