On lag and communication: Two interrelated issues
On Thursday, January 8th Nethaera sent out a memo to all the fan sites asking them to announce it, and Eyonix posted on the forums for all the rest of us. Latency and connectivity issues will be fixed in patch 3.0.8. The crowds cheered, babies cried in joy, and dog and cats started to live together. The world would be right again.Fast forward 15 days later.
The high latency while raiding places like Naxxramas and Malygos is still there. The servers are still packed with queue. The patch was a near disaster. And we're still getting bug reports in every 10 minutes, both in comments and via our tip-line.
Many people want to know why this hasn't been fixed. People are out looking for blood. The whole head on a pike sort of thing.
A better way to approach the situation is to try to come up with contingency plans and other activities to do. If Blizzard cannot get their servers to work, to the point that many consider the game playable, then people will need to focus on other aspects of the game or try to work around the problematic parts.
On the couple servers I play on many of the top guilds have decided to stop raiding for the night if there are any problems with high latency in the raid instances. On Alex's server people raid only for a couple hours after 10pm when the queues and population have dropped off. And still other guilds I know have just said forget it completely and are on hiatus until these issues are fixed.
For me, the latency has encouraged me to pickup my alts and start to power level them through Outland / Northrend. I'm doing about a level every other day for a few alts. It's not particularly hard either, with the rest bonus and how easy it is to get through 58 to 70 now.
However for many the latency and continuous issues present in the game are getting to a point beyond annoying. The lack of communication from Blizzard isn't helping much either. While Ghostcrawler has been very forthcoming about the problems that exist in his department (game design and internal game mechanics), there has been a serious lack of communication from the rest of Blizzard on the other issues.
The communication that I believe we are all looking for goes beyond just the announcements and platitudes about the servers being down for maintenance. The communication I believe we need is something more. Let me pretend I'm Blizzard for a moment. I'll put on my blue makeup, crack my role playing fingers, and write what I think would be good communication from the blues (I give props to Kevin Smith and his constant role playing on Smodcast for this idea):
Dear community,
We've recently found ourselves facing serious latency, connectivity, and in-game problems. This is an unfortunate and very frustrating situation for all of us. We are working day and night to solve these problems, and ask that you are patient while we undertake the development and testing that will be necessary to fix the multitude of issues present.
We are all players too. We go home after work to play the game only to be greeted by hour queues and endless lag as we try to conquer Naxxramas and Malygos. We hate that. Nothing is more disappointing for us in-game than to have to call a raid because the severs are not working. We're there. We understand where you're coming from. We hear you loud and clear.
While we can't promise you a timeframe for the fix to this, we can promise you that everyone in the company is dedicated to bringing you the best experience possible in game. Fixing these things is all we're talking about at work, it's all we're focused on at the moment.
In our years as a company we've grown from a small organization to one of the largest gaming companies in the world. And while we've added countless numbers of personnel to our ranks, and spend millions of dollars developing products, the one thing that has remained consistent is our unending devotion to bring to you a good game to play.
We still have that devotion, and we still want to deliver to you a great time. We ask for your support as we work to make this a reality again.
Sincerely,
Blizzard.
/endrp
Okay, now wouldn't that be a bit of better communication than:
" We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve these issues." (source)
Now I've worked high up in a company where communication had to be precise and well thought out, even ran by lawyers to make sure we weren't going to get ourselves in trouble. There is no doubt that a statement like the one I RP-ed would take a day to produce. But in the end it would provide something much better, much more personal, and much more understandable than the current dogma that is coming out of the mouths of the majority of the blues.
No one is asking for the world here. All people want to know is when, and what, is being done to fix this.
I have gotten to know some of the people at Blizzard, both directly and through reporting on what they say. I know that they are good and dedicated individuals. But someone over there needs to come out and start talking with everyone honestly about what is going on and what they are doing to fix it. All this QQ is getting a bit much, and everyone just wants to get back to playing the game and enjoying this great social environment again.

I work at a software company, and I've been impressed in the past at the overall quality and polish of WoW. However, the recent patches have shown that while it takes years to build a good reputation, it only takes a couple of terrible patches to destroy it. And the pressure to 'get back on schedule' is starting to build; patch 3.0.8 seemed long in coming, was in many ways a disaster, and had no new content - and the natives are already asking for 3.1.
A couple of potential big problems may be hidden from consumers:
- Layoffs / RIFs / people leaving for their own reasons / transferred to new products (loss of important, productive people) -- which Blizzard is unlikely to divulge if they can avoid it, and
- Massive overtime and effort needed to correct critical issues like the mail bug in an earlier patch, and now the Wintergrasp, Arena, and various other issues plaguing patch 3.0.8
Both are issues that eat into the time needed for patch 3.1. You lose people and new people have to get up to speed. You work to correct a patch, and lose time toward the next patch. You have to try to fix not only the software, but your failed processes that allowed broken software to go live. Blizzard is behind, falling further behind, and their previously professed preference for a tight ship and limited crew doesn’t give them a lot of wiggle room. And let’s admit that throwing more people at the problem won’t correct the issues in the short term, though adding staff should help in the longer term.
But if Blizzard keeps having fiascos like this, they won’t need more personnel...

I said that before and I'll say it again: Big patches are WRONG.
Break down the patch. Let's say, (and sorry about the order, but I'm a PvP server -- you probably won't agree with me if you are in a PvE server.):
- New lock summoning stone
- New items
- Class balances
- Wintergrasp changes
- New arena ratings
- Open clams while riding
Make each one of those ONE patch, not one big thing. So, put the warlock summoning stone in the game (after testing) and wait a while to see if it works; then you move forward.
Constant improvement, not massively broken improvements.

Two points:
1. The people involved with implementing site advertisements have NOTHING to do with the game. Ghostcrawler doesn't write HTML.
2. This is not the worst patch we've seen. It's up there, but there's been worse. (Opening of AQ gates, anyone?)

The problem with a letter like the one in the article is that it's not substantially different than the tl;dr version of "Thanks for your patience, we're working on it." Aside from sounding sympathetic? Which is nice and all, but ultimately sympathy isn't even what the author calls for. The nice pretty sample letter doesn't provide info on "when, and what, is being done to fix this."
Blizzard is rightfully not giving information on what is being done to fix the problems and when it's going to be fixed because I'd guess Blizzard knows neither exactly how to fix the issue nor when it'll be finished. And I'd rather the company spend their resources fixing problems than telling us that they're fixing the problems and attaching a sob story at the bottom.

"I'd rather the company spend their resources fixing problems than telling us that they're fixing the problems and attaching a sob story at the bottom."
false choice. The people working on a fix aren't the ones who would be talking to the community so there's no reason not to do both. I don't want 'we're working on it' posts either... but they could say things like "the next maintenance will have some fixes in... we're not sure if this is the whole thing, but please let us know how raids behave after it."
Instead, we have no idea of what happens during maintenance at all nor whether any code was deployed that might address issues.
it's called professional product management. It's common, it's not hard and I have to believe that the reason this doesn't happen is less the front line people and more the senior management's attitude.

First of all, asdfate - you're a @#()$wad. Get some perspective and take a night off.
Second, Adam your RP communication was crap. I dont pay 15 bucks a month for fake sympathy from blizzard. I dont need a perfectly crafted "we totally understand you. BFF!" email and personally, i dont see why anyone else does either. People want communication, not sympathy and not platitudes. "Update: 5pm PST. we are still having issues and are working on it. We will post an update when the situation changes" is good enough for me. Which they are doing.
All your email said was "Man, this sucks. You know it and we agree. Dont hate us!" It was even more bereft of information than usual.
And as the comments here have proven, no two blizzard customers can agree on WHAT they want, which is why they say as little as possible in all circumstances and stick to verifiable facts and no promises.
And for the record, I dont have any issues with how they are handling the current situation beyond "I sure wish they hadnt totally jacked the game up with this patch." But i've been a blizzard customer for 15 years. Not only have they earned slack from me, but in 6 months when we're raiding Ulduar, who cares if for 48 hours, one of the patches didnt work right way back then.
Why hold a grudge?
Mankrik Jan 23rd 2009 4:07PM
Blizzard will not fix the lag problems until players start cancelling their accounts. You can piss and moan on the forums about and all you get from that is your topic deleted. And if you continue to post about it, they ban you from the forums.
In 4+years of playing WoW I have never seen it this bad.
Cetyrz Jan 23rd 2009 4:09PM
"No one is asking for the world here. All people want to know is when, and what, is being done to fix this."
Did you ever stop to think that rant posts like this are the reason Blizzard don't give us an ETA on a fix that is as complex as server load / latency. Because let's just assume they did (keep RPing for me there champ) and they were but one minute late on their proposed fix for the latency, you would be all over crying foul that Blizzard don't make good on their promises.
Good customer service is not telling a lie, if Blizzard don't know when it's being fixed because they are still working on it then we don't either it's as simple as that.
Similarly if you KNOW that Blizzard employees are good hard working people as you claim they are ("I have gotten to know some of the people at Blizzard, both directly and through reporting on what they say. I know that they are good and dedicated individuals.") Then why come here to whine.
Seriously all I heard in that post was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
Houston Jan 23rd 2009 4:10PM
Finally buckling under it's own weight. I'd hate to be the guy responsible for fixing this.
Amaxe Jan 23rd 2009 4:19PM
You could be right. I have no idea what sort of servers these things run on for WoW, but I imagine with the problems they could be near the end of the line.
Maybe WoW is just trying to be too many things at once and falling short because it is spread too thin.
A lot of people hate PvP now. I personally hate "vehicle quests," others hate other things and all of us like different things (some of them things the others hate).
Ultimately I think Blizzard has to think about the bloat, and decide exactly what sort of game they want it to be, trimming the fat and getting forward with what it will be.
stevens.ce Jan 24th 2009 11:46AM
This.
I think WoW is slowly become the Microsoft Word of the gaming community - software that tries to be everything to everyone and ends up doing very few things well. Word has 8.7 million features now, and every one of them sucks the performance out of the software, to the point that it's easier to write in Notepad or Textedit. I fear that in an effort to be all things to all player groups (casuals, pvpers, twinks, hardcore raiders, 10-year-olds), WoW is losing some of its edge and a whole lot of its performance. I think the vehicle stuff has really slowed down many fairly simple quests, and that Wintergrasp is a largely unplayable laggy poorly coordinated mess, and I would have been just fine if neither had seen the light of day in Wrath.
I think Blizzard needs to decide what they want WoW to be - all those things they want to do that they can't do or shouldn't do in WoW should be in another game - maybe World of Starcraft or Hello Kitty Online (for the twink community).
garinow Jan 23rd 2009 4:15PM
I think you have to consider that not all realms are equally affected by issues with lag or connectivity or queues. Through the entire duration of WotLK I have had absolutely no issues with lag, and it's not like I have a really great computer or anything. There are queues for a window of an hour or so during the evening but it's a small queue.
viisual Jan 23rd 2009 4:26PM
Unfortunately, everyone at blizzard is heavily restricted by NDA, don't hold your breath for more than what they tell you.
This shouldn't be a feeling your not used to already... if you have ever seen a crime scene, of course you want to know what happened, what is happening to catch the offender, and how you can help. Guess what, you get none of those answers until the news airs.
It might be unfair or whatever, but it's the world we live in, a need-to-know basis.
...
Just imagine, if it was a missing semi-colon causing the lag... do you think Blizzard would tell you that?
Remua Jan 23rd 2009 4:36PM
Do any of you actually WORK in Customer Service? You want transparency in all service related issues. You want a flowery letter so you can go to bed all warm and fuzzy, wrapped in your blanket of 'Blizz loves me!'
"Working day and night to solve all problems?" In a litigious society, all it takes is one uptight lawyer, or pissed off fanboi, to call them on that, to PROVE they are doing it. If they aren't, then compensation is demanded.
The entire paragraph about how they are players? My server rarely has a queue, and I noticed 0 lag in 10m Naxx on Wednesday. 1 person notices that, claims favoritism, we have a mess. Not to mention rampant speculation that would ensue that 'blizz employees use special servers.'
Basis in truth? No. Do trolls care about truth? No.
As much as your typical care-free gamer may want this percieved transparency, from a Corporate stand point they simply CAN'T. They less said about this, the better, for their protection.
I want the game to be flawless too. What I don't want is for Blizz to have to turtle up even more because they get their hand slapped for trying to be open.
Clevins Jan 23rd 2009 5:49PM
yes I have in the past. And there are plenty of examples of companies of all sizes being much more communicative than Blizzard is.
NoSleep Jan 23rd 2009 4:29PM
It looks like we are all getting technical here... I have an opinion on the lag... You see I am one of those IT geeks / Network Engineer. I have setup many large enterprise networks etc... Enough, you get my point.... So listen.... Ready....
The AT&T backbone that blizzard runs all of their servers on, which are OC based via a few data centers, SUCKS! Unless your ISP peers with AT&T somewhere that is not a gazillion hops out, assuming no BGP issues / flapping routers, your latency is going to be high and you will get the LAG monster after your ass. Please post what the lag monster should look like and how to tank him appropriately. As well if you are using a Microsoft OS out of the box without any tweaks then you deserve what you get.
For VISTA: Turn off services that are not essential... Google for it lots of info out there. You mees up your box not my fault.
Turn off the Windows Search services as well as right click your WOW folder, hit advanced at hte bottom of the first screen there and uncheck "index this folder for faster searching"
Follow this link: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=2574
If you go to the above link and follow the instructions... Actually really read it. you will have way less lag...
My contribution, take it leave it.... WHATEVER!
PS.. Feral Druids are better tanks than Warriors :)
Taladan Jan 23rd 2009 4:44PM
Different type of latency problem, cowboy. I usually have a latency of 300ms (blame on the distance, I'm in Aus playing in a US server) but the response time is high. It's about the server load, not the network problem.
SaintStryfe Jan 23rd 2009 4:42PM
If your raids are slow, do something else. Battlegrounds. Loremaster. Try an alt. There's thousands of things to do in this game, if one is having hiccups just try something new.
Too much QQ from too many people.
peagle Jan 23rd 2009 4:51PM
Raids have been lagged out since the release of WoLK. Your suggestion is to not raid at all and go do achievements? WTF
