Servers still down for emergency maintenance this morning [UPDATED]
Realms were taken down for emergency maintenance early this morning, with a 2-4 hour estimated window of downtime. I woke up this morning long after the maintenance had started, so my assumption was the servers would probably be up pretty quickly. That was not the case, unfortunately! Luckily I have other things to do today (like write all of this stuff for you), so I'm not terribly broken up about it, but I'm sure a lot of you were planning to get some gaming in this morning. It's currently a little after 8 am in Irvine, and assuming the maintenance started at the intended 5 am, we only have a little under an hour left of the estimated maintenance duration. Here's hoping that's actually the case, and we see servers coming up within the hour. If that's not how today plays out, we'll be sure to let you know.
Update: We've hit the 4 hour mark and run over, it's been just shy of 40 minutes past the estimate. We'll see how much longer this goes on. Personally, I'd be fine if the servers were down all day long if it meant the rampant lag across many servers was resolved because of it... but that's just me! Either way, we'll be keeping an eye on it.
Update #2: Servers are starting to come back on, ladies and gents.

Nope, that website offering a form of "insurance" has had it's main page down and is "restructuring it's fee for compensation" plan. Looks like they may have gotten a letter from Blizzard.

I second that EPIC FAIL... I dont care if they have to stay down for a week... FIX THE LAG once and for all... add 300 more servers if thats what it takes.. not like you DONT have the money for it Blizz... FIX IT
slartibart Jan 23rd 2009 12:00PM
This is a great point that really cuts to the heart of the matter.
Maybe Blizz should shove all their money into the servers, and see if that fixes the issue.
Really, it's a great valid point. I don't see why a server wouldn't work better if you didn't open it up and shove hundred dollar bills into it.

Making me hate arena even more blizz.
I am paying for this game time.
SINisterWyvern Jan 23rd 2009 11:19AM
You're also paying for the heat/gas/electric for your home when you're not there. Do you demand a refund from them for the miniscule electricity being used by electronics on standby instead of switched off when you're not at home?
Amaxe Jan 23rd 2009 11:21AM
No, but I'd sure as hell demand credits for when I wanted access to my heat and water and it wasn't available.
SINisterWyvern Jan 23rd 2009 11:25AM
Hmm, best other side of that i've seen actually. Though I do believe as long as you're up to date on bills they guarantee you service, unlike blizzard does.
It doesn't matter, servers up or down these people would complain.
Servers up => "waahhh bugs and lag and DCs"
Servers down (to fix above problems) => "waahhhh I want my playtime!"
SBKT Jan 23rd 2009 11:28AM
The general voice is "I don't care if it's broken, I want to use it."
turkeyspit Jan 23rd 2009 11:17AM
So I'm looking for a time credit for the almost 15 hours of playtime I've lost this week due to server's being offline.
I'll forgive not being able to raid for that past 2 weeks because of lag/DC issues (y'know, aggro the boss, half the raid DCs, that sort of thing) just cause I'm an awesome guy.
But seriously, "we regret any inconvenience" just won't cut it this time....
SINisterWyvern Jan 23rd 2009 11:22AM
If you want I can send you the 30 cents that cost you....
jeni Jan 23rd 2009 12:02PM
So, let's just say that you pay the full $15.00 a month for 720 hours of play time. That comes out to a very rough 2 cents an hour. You'd be refunded 30 cents for your 15 hours or down time.
Now, let's say say you make an arguement that you believe you only pay for the 20 hours you play a week (I bet you play for more, but 20 seems standard). So that 80 hours a month of play time that you pay $15.00 for. That's about 18 cents an hour.
In that scenario, you want to be refunded $2.70!
*thumbs up*
