Simple Wood no longer needed to make campfires
This is quite possibly the most game altering change Blizzard has implemented in WoW thus far: Building a Basic Campfire no longer needs Simple Wood, only Flint and Tinder or a Gnomish Army Knife. This is right up there with stackable clams! Personally, my mind is blown.Okay, let's be serious, this is actually a fairly decent (and convenient) change. Is it absolutely needed? No, not at all, but how many of us carried around Simple Wood and Flint and Tinder at all times? Who took those things to raids with them? Very few people, if anybody at all. And I can recall tons of times that people have rushed to a raid just after getting home from work and had forgotten to cook up their consumables. These fires would've been legitimately useful right then, but the small annoyance of carrying stacks of Wood around made it pretty unlikely that anybody had them. Nowadays, I think just about everyone carries a Gnomish Army Knife (and they should if they don't), so this is actually very convenient! You don't need to carry anything extra at all.
My question is... what are we burning to make that fire now? Sure, if you're out in the wilderness you can just assume your character gathered some firewood, but you're not always in a position to do that! What if you're in the middle of Ulduar? Pretty hard to burn all of that stone, isn't it? Daniel Whitcomb suggested that his Death Knight will just summon a ghoul and light it aflame to cook his meal, but that seems a little macabre, even for him.
[Thanks for all of the tips, everyone!]

My two raiding characters carry a full stack of wood and flint/tinder with them just so they can cook food for raids. This will free up bag space nicely since I got them both Army Knives.

No longer will we have to salvage the bones of Mr. Bigglesworth for fuel!
Naxx shall be filled with the sweet aromas of Azeroth's finest recipes! (I'm looking at YOU, Worg Tartare...)

Ironically, spacehyena, Worg Tartare (http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=62350) is one of the few cooking recipes that *doesn't* require a fire (see the tooltip).
But yeah, this is very convenient.

Oh...well.
AWKward.

Thank god - I don't know what it is about the city folk of Stormwind (was SW previously burned to the ground?) but finding a cooking fire anywhere near the AH/ bank etc. is freaking impossible!
SINisterWyvern Jan 23rd 2009 11:15AM
@James
I believe you can cook on the fire in the inn there right between the 2.
Oneiroi Jan 23rd 2009 11:49AM
I agree with the annoyance of Stormwind, and I swear I've looked in the inn and can't find a fire.
At least Ironforge has torches everywhere.
Kesh Jan 23rd 2009 11:52AM
No, there's no fire in the inn by the bank. Really annoying.
trogdor7 Jan 23rd 2009 12:45PM
Yeah, the fire is all the way in the Mage Quarter in the Blue Recluse.
Sarah Jan 27th 2009 11:47AM
you can go to the inn in the old part of town (not the blue recluse, the one near the keep where the cooking trainer and cooking recipes are)
or buy flint and tinder from trade supplies in the middle.

And for horde, there's a gigantic bonfire about ten feet away from the Org AH, near the entrance to the flight tower.

As an engineer who loves the Gnomish Army Knife like it were my child and keeps hoping they'll add an enhanced version that would roll my teleporters and Zapthrottle Extractor in there as well, I love this change. I haven't made a fire since Cooking level 50 because I didn't want to carry wood. But as a semi-realist, it does bother me that you can simply start a fire with no apparent combustible material. I think I'll pretend that I'm using a nearby gnome as kindling.
Elwoods Jan 23rd 2009 10:37AM
Just get one of your mages to burn a random character and cook over their still flaming corpse!!! :)
Konchu Jan 23rd 2009 11:52AM
Just pretend that the Gnomish army knife was slightly modified by a Goblin engineer. Just hope it does not blow up on you.

Dotn forget a repair bot that sells new regents too.
Max Jan 23rd 2009 9:13AM
My friend will constantly carry around the two so that, if he is ever attacked by an ally and wins, he can lay down a "camp"fire to let them know he's there to stay.
I'm sure he'll be glad to find out about the news.
Adorialea Jan 23rd 2009 9:14AM
I didn't know about the removal of the reagent until someone in my guild mentioned it. The vendor really should have told me I didn't need 20 Simple Wood before I bought it!
Keyra Jan 23rd 2009 9:24AM
The day before the patch, I bought 40 pieces of wood that I'm carrying around. Figures...
...and now I'm instantly reminded of the Dynamic Action Team ( http://tinyurl.com/63tve2 )...
Wooooooood? Buy my wooooood?

This was obviously a game-breaking issue - just as much as non-stackable clams
REJOICE !!! WoW is now working as intended
