Simple Wood no longer needed to make campfires
This is quite possibly the most game altering change Blizzard has implemented in WoW thus far: Building a Basic Campfire no longer needs Simple Wood, only Flint and Tinder or a Gnomish Army Knife. This is right up there with stackable clams! Personally, my mind is blown.Okay, let's be serious, this is actually a fairly decent (and convenient) change. Is it absolutely needed? No, not at all, but how many of us carried around Simple Wood and Flint and Tinder at all times? Who took those things to raids with them? Very few people, if anybody at all. And I can recall tons of times that people have rushed to a raid just after getting home from work and had forgotten to cook up their consumables. These fires would've been legitimately useful right then, but the small annoyance of carrying stacks of Wood around made it pretty unlikely that anybody had them. Nowadays, I think just about everyone carries a Gnomish Army Knife (and they should if they don't), so this is actually very convenient! You don't need to carry anything extra at all.
My question is... what are we burning to make that fire now? Sure, if you're out in the wilderness you can just assume your character gathered some firewood, but you're not always in a position to do that! What if you're in the middle of Ulduar? Pretty hard to burn all of that stone, isn't it? Daniel Whitcomb suggested that his Death Knight will just summon a ghoul and light it aflame to cook his meal, but that seems a little macabre, even for him.
[Thanks for all of the tips, everyone!]

Call me a noob, but I didn't even know about the Gnomish Army Knife.
As soon as the realms come back on line I'm marching my hunter (skinner/enchanter/cook) who's bag space is always at a premium to get one at the AH. Then I'm marching my rogue (skinner/lw), my druid (herbalist/alchemist/cook), and my pally (bs/miner) to get one.
Likewise, in my reading the patch notes, I did not even notice that fires don't require wood anymore. Cool. Now instead of running to the big fire in the Dalaran sewers to cook up my Infused Mushroom Meatloaf (so I don't use my own supplies), I'll just cook it right in front of the turn-in. That guy really likes his meatloaf.
This combo of info. is awesome in a stackable clam kind of way. BTW how come the clams are stackable but the meat isn't? That seems kind of silly imo.

The meat *is* stackable; you just have to do it manually.
Weird and annoying at the same time.

Manure is always in plentiful supply and is flammable.

this is a life altering event.

Just think like Bear Grylls, There's always something to start a fire with...how bout those mammoth droppings that have to be all around the place now.

being a shaman, I protest to being forced to use even flint and tinder (same goes for mages/locks) :)
seriously, i can do fireBurst, flameShock, 3 totems that BURN my enemies, but i am unable to make a single small campfire :)
Link Death Jan 23rd 2009 11:08AM
Single small campfire? Sounds to me more like you can create a conflagration, but a small, controlled fire might be beyond you. ;)

Mage: Kafwoom!!! I started a cooking fire
Rogue: O_o;; You started a forest fire

That's bugged me for years! I'm a fire mage, I'm tossing flame and fireballs around constantly! I don't need no stinkin' flint and tinder!
Mr42 Jan 23rd 2009 4:11PM
well, guess Amaxe's got a point after all :)
Xigageshi Jan 23rd 2009 11:23AM
well as a mage my story will be I just conjured some wood, I mean if I can make delicious mana strudels some piles of tinder shouldn't be too tall an order.

question... can you make a campfire while in combat? (Heigan related)

How's about this for the reality-minded folk:
Add some simple wood to the Gnomish Army Knife as one of the construction components :) Or better yet, since it's doubtful Blizz will do this, do as others have mentioned and imagine a secret compartment in the knife that stores shrunken wood that instantly springs back to full size when removed! You know how fond gnomish engineers are for shrinking things, after all.

I guess this change is the same as the Blind change not requiring blinding powder because your rogue supposedly picks up dust to use the ability.
Maybe your character grabs whatever twigs and branches he/she can find to make the fire, it would almost make sense...what else is happening in that 10 sec cast time?
er..except when ur in the middle of the desert where there is no twigs or branches..

People actually use wood for campfires? People still make them?
I usually just horde my meat and cook it up all at once using any 1 of a number of "names" (blazing, cooking top, etc) fires in any of the cities big or little. I haven't made or used a campfire in about 3 years.

I just started leveling cooking on a new alt and was wondering about this. I knew I had once needed Simple Wood for something. I thought it was to make a fire, since that would make sense, but apparently not.

Maaaan.
My cooking is still at 2.
Jermayan Jan 23rd 2009 12:15PM
Cow Patties. That's all the fuel the Horde could ever need.

The EPA would be looking to limit Tauren flatulence...

So has simple wood been removed from the game entirely or is there still some use for it?
