WoW Moviewatch: Story of the Jarhead
Story of the Jarhead (which has some mature language, as a warning) is one of those machinimas that initially make you think it's a pretty cool idea, but as it goes on you wish they had done more with it. The silhouetted intro piqued my curiosity right off the bat, but there simply wasn't enough to the video overall to keep that interest. I'm not a movie buff, but I assume that the soundtrack and dialogue is from a movie (Jarhead, probably?). Maybe if I had seen the movie, I'd feel greater attachment to the machinima, but I don't really have that connection and thus the nod is lost on me.
That said, the models and setting were pretty good choices to represent the sound and dialogue. The desert setting of Tanaris is fitting (certainly moreso than Stranglethorn Vale or Icecrown), and those 'uniforms' are probably as close to desert camo as you'll get in WoW. The animation fit great in some places, but in others? Not so much. Keeping movements more fluid from scene to scene would be great, I don't think anybody sits or stands absolutely perfectly still at any given moment.
Overall, I think this video is a good starting point with a lot of potential, but is a bit too bare for the dialogue to carry. You, more or less, get the same experience if you just listen to the sound and look away from the video itself. I assume that the monologue was the basis for the video to begin with so that's understandable to some extent, but the visuals should be able to stand upright as well.

The dialogue and soundtrack is in fact from the film Jarhead.

Yeah, the music/dialogue is from Jarhead, the voice of Jake Gyllenhaal.
A lot of the scenes in the machinima are direct copies/translations of scenes from the movie, like the hydration/dehydration sequence (lol).

and some nice Tom Waits at the end

Just like the movie. An interesting idea in concept, boring as all hell in actuality.

I thought the movie was all right. Not the best but definitely not the worst either.

Totally. Movie went absolutely nowhere. I wouldn't was a bad movie, it was just nowhere near what I had expected, so I found no entertainment in watching. Basically a modern day version of the full metal jacket bootcamp without all the awesomeness, but a whole bunch of dudes finding out their wives/girlfriends are all cheating on them.

I actually liked this one a lot. While the poster didn't seem to quite "get it," and it's clearly because he never saw the movie, and thus has no emotions or preset feelings about the Marines dialog. Jarhead is one of my favorite movies, a lot of things they showed about military life, especially Marine Crops life is true to this day. I'm a sucker for these types of movies though. He could have just had one that said, "This is my rifle, there are many like it, but this one is mine. etc..." and I would have enjoyed it.

I'm guessing you've never sat somewhere for hours/days/months on end while serving in the military? Honestly, I thought the movie was spot on in some areas but unfortunately, like an inside joke, most people just don't "get it".
Ecthalar Jan 23rd 2009 3:25PM
Served in the military? No. Sat hours/days on end? Yes. Shall I make a movie about my experiences? I think not. All due respect to you and your military service, but Jarhead, spot-0n though it may have been, was neither entertaining or enlightening for me. For many examples of the correct way to tell a story about military life, head on over to BigRedKitty's blog.

What I can't get over is how kids can trivialize this war by playing it out with video game characters. It's dishonorable and disgusting.
