I have been doing this for years now. Not just because it works but also because playing with only a mouse and using an on-screen keyboard to type kinda requires you to stand still while typing.

The downside however is that you will not end up on anyone's friend list for future pugs. So, I tend to socialize before entering and after exiting the instance. But as soon as we zone, I'm silence itself and just do my job.

Its pretty fitting for a mage to be silent too.
