Encrypted Text: Guide to Rogue gear for new raiders
Every Wednesday, Chase Christian of Encrypted Text invites you to enter the world of shadows, as we explore the secrets and mechanics of the Rogue class. This week, we'll discuss gearing options for a Rogue who wants to break into the raiding scene.Last week, we looked at what stats are important for a PvE Rogue, and how those stats interact with each other and why they're important. To summarize, hit and expertise ratings are very important until you reach a few key milestones, after which the pure damage options like Agility and Attack Power become more attractive.
The key is to be over 99 hit rating (the Yellow Hit Cap - YHC) but under 315 hit rating (the Poison Hit Cap - PHC) and to never be over 214 expertise rating (the Expertise Cap - EC)? If you look in the right places, reaching these numbers becomes fairly simple. Bind on Equip Leatherworking goods, Heroic drops, and reputation rewards will form the core of your gear as a newly 80 Rogue. Let's explore where to find the right type of gear to prepare you for that Naxxramas raid next weekend. Much of this information can be found at Shadow Panther, however I have collected the pieces that specifically sport Hit or Expertise that can be acquired in 5 man Dungeons or below. Remember that the PHC and EC are "caps" and not necessarily goals, and that you shouldn't sacrifice other stats to reach these goals unless you have used a spreadsheet to determine which is the better piece of equipment.
Head:
*Heroic Oculus, Ley Guardian Eregos: Mask of the Watcher (meta socket, 62 Expertise rating)
Engineering, BoP Epic: Weakness Spectralizers (meta socket)
The Mask of the Watcher is stacked with Expertise and a comfy socket for your Relentless Earthsiege Diamond, making it the perfect pickup if you don't mind the Oculus. Engineers have an alternative option: Weakness Spectralizers. While they don't have any hit or expertise, they are among the top PvE Rogue helms currently and can be gemmed accordingly.
--------------------------
Neck:
*Heroic Emblem reward, 25 Emblems of Heroism: Pendant of the Outcast Hero
There aren't many amulet options that have Expertise or Hit, but I recommend picking up this necklace anyway. It's among the lower priced Emblem gear, and can be obtained after just a few days' Heroics.
--------------------------
Shoulders:
Heroic Nexus, Grand Magus Telestra: Spaulders of the Careless Thief (red socket, 33 Hit rating)
*Leatherworking, BoE Epic: Trollwoven Spaulders (28 Expertise rating)
If gemmed for hit rating, these shoulders sport more hit rating than any other pair in the game. Nexus is one of the easier Heroic instances and has a few other key Hit Rating items, and so I recommend running it first and running it often if you are working to gear yourself for 10 man raids. An alternative option for shoulders are the Trollwoven Spaulders. These BoE shoulders have 28 Expertise rating and beat out all other pre-raid shoulders for Rogues. Look into these if you need additional Expertise.
--------------------------
Cloak:
*Heroic Violet Hold, Erekem: Cloak of the Gushing Wound (29 Hit rating)
Heroic Halls of Light, Volkhan: Shroud of Reverberation (31 Expertise rating)
While both of these cloaks aren't quite as potent as the BoE Ice Striker's Cloak for total DPS, they can be useful for augmenting hit or expertise if you are close to reaching one of their respective caps.
--------------------------
Chest:
*Heroic Nexus, Keristrasza: Crystal-Infused Tunic (red and yellow sockets, 51 Hit rating)
Heroic Azjol-Nerub, Krik'thir: Custodian's Chestpiece (45 Expertise rating)
The Crystal-Infused Tunic was the first level 80 blue I ever equipped, and it was only replaced by my T7 chest. It's got 2 sockets for maximum flexibility when trying to fine tune your stats, and has a large chunk of the hit rating that you'll need already on it. If you're looking good on hit rating and want to upgrade to a stronger piece of gear (or you need the Expertise), check out Azjol-Nerub for the Custodian's Chestpiece.
--------------------------
Wrist:
The Oculus, random BoE drop: Drake-Champion's Bracers (29 Hit rating)
*Heroic Utgarde Keep, Skarvald: Bindings of the Tunneler (25 Expertise rating)
Drake-Champion's Bindings are another great blue BoE that you can pick up from the AH if you're lucky. There are better bracers available, but if you want a pair with hit, these are your only option until 25 man Naxxramas. Bindings of the Tunneler are lower quality, but if you need the Expertise these are definitely an option
--------------------------
Hands:
*Heroic Utgarde Pinnacle, King Ymiron: Gilt-Edged Leather Gauntlets (66 Hit rating)
Heroic Emblem reward, 60 Emblems of Heroism: Heroes' Bonescythe Gauntlets (yellow socket, 33 Hit rating)
King Ymiron in Heroic UP drops the very hit-stacked Gilt-Edged Leather Gauntlets, which make it easy to acquire a quarter or more of the total hit you need from a single item. This can open up other gear opportunities in other slots, I recommend trying to acquire a pair of these (along with the trinket he drops) if you have the opportunity. If you're sitting on Emblems of Heroism (I am), you can also grab the T7 gloves which are a great choice for trying to achieve the set bonuses.
--------------------------
Waist:
Heroic Azjol-Nerub, BoE blue: Treasure Seeker's Belt (yellow socket and belt buckle socket, 41 Hit rating)
*Leatherworking, BoE Epic: Trollwoven Girdle (belt buckle socket, 38 Expertise rating)
Both of the best belt options are BoE, and so you have the choice of checking the Auction House for one of these items or gathering the materials for the Trollwoven Girdle and having a Leatherworker craft it for you. The Treasure Seeker's Belt can be loaded up with whatever stat you are lacking by adding an Eternal Belt Buckle and giving yourself 2 sockets to work with.
--------------------------
Legs:
Heroic Gundrak, Gal'darah: Gored Hide Legguards (52 Hit rating)
*Reputation reward, Kirin Tor Revered: Mind-Expanding Leggings (red socket (with +Hit socket bonus), 62 Expertise)
Blizzard has given us a few different choices of raiding pants, including the BoE Chain Gang Legguards and the reputation reward Azure Strappy Pants; however there are better options. Gored Hide Legguards are the best pants you'll see until T7, and Mind-Expanding Leggings sport more Expertise than any other pants in the game. Look to either of these items to bring in a huge chunk of your required stat of choice.
--------------------------
Feet:
*Reputation reward, Argent Crusade Exalted: Boots of the Neverending Path (66 Hit rating)
Nothing outside of a raid can compete with these incredibly solid boots from the Argent Crusade. I would recommend sporting their tabard in your 80 dungeons as soon as possible. Having very solid and simply acquired items like these boots allow greater flexibility in other slots, and will make managing your hit and expertise far easier.
--------------------------
Ring:
*Heroic Culling of Stratholme, Chrono-Lord Epoch: Mobius Band (25 Hit rating)
Heroic Gundrak, Gal'darah: Hemorrhaging Circle (33 Expertise rating)
While the Ring of Scarlet Shadows may look attractive, it is only middle-of-the-pack as far as Rogue rings go. I would recommend running Heroic Culling of Stratholme (while working on your Bronze Drake) and shooting for the stronger Mobius Band. Gal'darah in Gundrak drops the Hemorrhaging Circle, one of the better rings for a Rogue in game right now. He also drops the pants mentioned earlier in this article, so you have a high percent chance of getting something worth wearing if you can defeat him.
--------------------------
Trinket:
Heroic Emblem reward, 40 Emblems of Heroism: Mirror of Truth (it's awesome)
*Heroic Nexus, Keristrasza: Sphere of Red Dragon's Blood (55 Hit rating)
By running the Heroic Nexus, you'll have a shot at 3 different raiding pieces of gear; and it is the easiest Heroic to boot. There are a few better trinkets available, but with up to 7 classes rolling on the same physical DPS trinket, you will want to secure whatever you can as soon as possible. The Mirror of Truth should always be in one of your trinket slots, as it is really a best-in-slot (BIS) item (by a large margin) unless you can afford a Darkmoon Card: Greatness.
--------------------------
Ranged:
Heroic Utgarde Keep, Ingvar: Drake-Mounted Crossbow
The Drake-Mounted Crossbow is one of the easier ranged weapons to acquire, and is worth more in your ranged slot than any other item outside of 25 man Naxxramas. If you can't pick this up (and please don't take it over a Hunter), then Lillehoff's Winged Blades are an option.
--------------------------
Weapons:
Heroic Halls of Lightning, random BoE drop: Librarian's Paper Cutter
Heroic Gundrak, Moorabi: Fist of the Deity (25 Hit rating)
Reputation reward, Wyrmrest Accord Honored: Fang of Truth (33 Hit rating)
If you're Mutilate, dual-wield Librarian's Paper Cutters. There is no better weapon until you're able to raid Naxxramas. If you're Combat, you are likely MH Fist / OH Sword, in which case the Fist of the Deity is a very solid MH weapon and has a spot of hit on it as well. The Fang of Truth is an ample OH for Combat as well (sporting 33 Hit) although you will want to spreadsheet your Off Hand items every time as there is a very intricate relationship between Combat Rogue OH weapons and Combat Potency.
--------------------------
Summary:
If you used all of the above items with an asterisk (a *) by the name, ungemmed and unenchanted, your Rogue could have 317 Hit rating and 215 Expertise rating, letting you reach both the Expertise Cap (EC) and the Poison Hit Cap (PHC) without sacrificing ANY gems or enchants at all! As you explore more raiding content, you may find that there are upgrades that transcend these caps and the rules around them. Always theorycraft your gear in a spreadsheet to ensure that you're making the right gearing choices for your Rogue.

Which is why it surprised me that you gave no mention of it. Shame on you!

Didn't read the article but found it amusing anyway...
All i can say is "LOL" at the picture and spelling of Rogue as Rouge
Josh Jan 28th 2009 12:56PM
Chase, if you are gemming or gearing specifically for hit you are doing it wrong. Hit is nice as a side stat, but gear for overall DPS, not for hit. Your guide points people in the wrong direction. Just like the article where you tried to make the Fleshshaper sound good for rogue PVE, you're just out of touch with the rogue community.
Chase Christian Jan 28th 2009 1:40PM
I actually indicated in this article that you DON'T have to gem for hit in order to be competitive. I mention that there is no substitution for theorycrafting your own gear choices.
And I have NEVER even featured the Fleshshaper in any of my articles, let alone call it good for PvE. There was a "phat loot" column that ran here and is not written by me; I believe they featured the dagger.
jadickson83 Jan 28th 2009 12:34PM
Chase,
Telling people that 315 Hit Rating is a "goal" is misleading. You do not need to hit the poison hit cap.
Yes, 1 point of hit rating increases our dps better than 1 point of any other stat, but there's more to it than that. You read EJ, you know this. Sometimes a piece of gear may actually be a big dps upgrade, even though it makes your hit rating go down slightly (ie if it increases your agility by 50 but lowers your hit by 20).
Chase Christian Jan 28th 2009 1:37PM
In every article I add the disclaimer to always theorycraft your gear choices, with a link to the Roguecraft spreadsheet. There is no substitution for honest math. However, when determining gear choices, these goals need to be in mind. If you're at 300 hit rating, adding 55 hit is not a wise decision in most cases. The idea is to reinforce the concept of "capping" a stat: that after this point you really don't need any more. I never make the argument that hit > anything else. On the contrary, in all of my articles I ask readers to think for themselves and find out their personal results on their own. It's the same reason you won't see me dropping EP value charts.
M Jan 28th 2009 2:25PM
Have you taken your list of gear and plugged it into the spreadsheet? Is it the best you can get pre-raid?
Telling other people in unnoticed "disclaimers" to do what you yourself haven't done is amusing.
jadickson83 Jan 28th 2009 3:34PM
Chase, your reply doesn't address the problem I posted about.
The first sentence of your second paragraph states that 315 Hit Rating is a goal to be reached. This is misleading. If I didn't know better, I would read that sentence and think I need to hit 26 Expertise and 315 Hit at the expense of all other stats, as if those are the first "goals" you should hit.
315 Hit isn't a goal, it's a soft cap. Those are two very different things, and I know that you understand that. You understand how spreadsheets and stat optimization works. That's why I'm so confused as to why you would write this.
You know that calling 315 Hit a "goal" is misleading. You need to edit that out of the original blog post.
Chase Christian Jan 28th 2009 3:38PM
@jadickson83-
While we agree that they are caps and not goals, I also agree that perhaps it was confusing. I've edited the opening paragraphs of this article to indicate that hit isn't > all stats, it's just heavily weighted. Check it out.
jadickson83 Jan 28th 2009 3:59PM
"So how are you going to reach the caps of 315 hit rating (the Poison Hit Cap - PHC) and 214 expertise rating (the Expertise Cap - EC)?"
This is the sentence now. I don't want to keep beating this dead horse, I really don't. But this sentence still assumes that you WANT to reach 315 hit rating, and it is misleading to any casual rogue that may read your blog.
In the previous sentence, you refer to 315 Hit as a "limit." Then, in this next sentence, you refer to it as a cap that you want to reach with "here is a blog post about how to reach the cap of 315 hit rating."
I just did an armory search Vulajin. He has 274 hit rating right now. He has gemmed almost entirely for attack power, not hit.
All you have to say is, "here is a bunch of accessible gear to increase your hit rating and expertise. You have to get at least 100 Hit Rating so that your special attacks don't miss, but don't go above the 315 Hit poison cap. Get your Expertise up to 26, but not higher."
Lemons Jan 28th 2009 12:53PM
I understand that this article is very much focused on reaching the poison hit and expertise caps before stepping into naxx, but I think another trinket worth mentioning to the budding raider is the Meteorite Whetstone off King Ymrion in H UP.
I haven't theorycrafted it, but I feel it's probably better than the Sphere of Red Dragon's Blood, plus I personally prefer random proc trinkets so I don't have to worry about clicking another button every 2 minutes.
Chase Christian Jan 28th 2009 1:38PM
I raid with Mirror of Truth / Meteorite for that purpose alone: pooling energy and waiting for a proc then unleashing my fury. :)
Steve Jan 28th 2009 2:16PM
Too much emphasis on Hit and Expertise. There are other stats out there and they can increase dps too. Stop focusing on caps, you just need to be aware of them, and how values of stats change as you change in stats.
Anyways, here's a list of up/sidegrades to the gear that may or may not have expertise/hit. They're just as good regardless.

Sure you may have a disclaimer, but talk about other stats in detail too then. Most people don't really get/remember more than a few points from reading so this will just perpetuate people to only look at Hit and Exp regardless of anything else.
ejunk Jan 28th 2009 2:21PM
Granted, our hit cap is much lower, but my kitty druid is swimming in +hit. it's a little ridiculous, really.

Eisengel Jan 28th 2009 2:35PM
Jeepers, calm down, it's like he suggested that you try to wear spell leather to increase poison damage or something.
If you at least move toward the caps, all your damage should scale up. If you get two drops that bump up your chance to hit by, say 2%, it has a disproportionately large increases on your DPS provided you aren't capped. Missing crit after crit due to being undercapped can cost you a lot. Sure, it only helps up to a point... and yes, even if you have a 50% miss rate, if you are able to make your hits 200% stronger, it doesn't matter since when you do hit you'll do more damage and it will all even out. However, this is the continuum:
no hit
reduces your DPS a lot
some hit
translates most of your DPS to the target
hitcapped
translates all your DPS to the target
too much hit
reduces your DPS
... you want that sweet spot, where you have enough hit and expertise to translate at least most of the damage you CAN do to your target. If you just stand there missing, even if you have 90,000 attack power, you're doing no damage.
Just don't ignore hit and expertise, sure pick up pieces that increase your overall DPS, but try to move steadily toward the caps. This isn't very important for questing, or even normal or heroic instances, but you want to be at least close to the caps when raiding. The gear loadout here is an 'EZ-mode' list you can follow to have a hitcapped set.
Josh Jan 28th 2009 3:27PM
You don't play a rogue, I'm going to assume. The cap he is talking about is the poison cap which is nice to have but you should NOT gear specifically for it. You are not missing "crit after crit", and if you do miss a few poisons the stats you gain by not tunnel vision focusing on hit will more than make up for it.
Expertise however is normally beneficial to be gemmed or geared for because of the reliance of mutilate on Cut to the Chase.
And if anyone needs that hit trinket with the spellpower proc over a caster, I hope a hunter takes Calamitys Grasp from you.
Grubba Jan 28th 2009 3:19PM
Please tell me that you did not just say that you can't crit what you can't hit.
Eisengel Jan 28th 2009 6:06PM
I do play a Rogue, actually, but I haven't played it in Wrath yet... and didn't play is much in end BC, in fact. it's next on the list... so I'm talking from half-remembered BC-dom.
Quite so, Grubba, crit is just a percentage on the single roll attack table... it has been a while and I'm used to channeling casters now, where missing the 1st hit (inital ctc) kills anything that would have come afterwards.
I'll meet you halfway, sure, the poison cap is of pretty minimal significance. Specials cap is pretty much a good place to stop. I agree the poison cap isn't all that useful. Sure some extra hit is nice, but.. yeah.. special cap, experitse cap, done.
M Jan 28th 2009 8:18PM
Greetings Eisengel
The #1 biggest difference between Rogues in BC and Rogues in Wrath is the change to Windfury totem. Previously, its effects cause Hit Rating to be counted twice, resulting in an exponential scaling in its effectiveness. That's why BC was all about Hit Rating.
Now, Hit Rating is important, but it only counts once, and it has diminishing returns right around the special hit cap (8% without Draenei racial). Expertise is still important and it's still applied in chunks, instead of scaling gradually like every other stat that exists *sigh*. But Expertise isn't what you look at either.
The overall purpose of Rogues is to DPS, so you don't look at any one stat more than any other. You choose the combination of stats that improves your overall DPS, not Hit Rating and not Expertise. You can't easily determine what is effective in improving your overall DPS without the use of a spreadsheet because it ends up being a multivariable calculus equation with multiple inflection points for all stats.
The author seems to still be stuck in the BC world, perhaps due to his predominant PvP mindset. He is focusing on particular stats that were either abnormally important in BC (Hit Rating) or were just plain hard to get in BC so they seemed more important (Expertise) which resulted in a few trinkets being enormously valuable even through T6 (Delrissa's Shard of Contempt).
His advice may be good when he is describing PvP tactics, gear choices, talents, etc. I can't judge that because I don't PvP.
But don't follow his PvE/Raiding advice. Get Vulajin's spreadsheet and find out for yourself what stats are important at every step of the way.
Embalmer Jan 28th 2009 4:21PM
Mirror of Truth is not a best-in-slot if you can't afford the card, and especially not "by far". For combat rogues, which I am, and according to the spreadsheet if you are stacking AP even after getting hit capped, Grim Toll is almost best-in-slot. Not a starter gear piece, but no best-in-slots are.
