@Dez: The fact that you wrote something so in depth in defense over this student defining WoW as a religion really just makes you look pathetic. Anyone with half a clue about reality understands that WoW is far from the common conception of "religion". Like above commenters have stated, if religion is to be defined in such a shallow manner, than many other things would be too.
When someone claims something to be a religion, there's the assumption that there's either a higher power or a purpose behind worship. WoW provides neither, other than worship of a) non-cognizant game code; or b) developers. In either circumstance, to defend categorizing WoW next to the other major world religions just shows that you're devotion to gaming has breached a little too far into what should be your perception of reality.

First off I care about as little of religion as I care for you telling me what me perception of reality should be. Let me just say that my point wasn't that WoW should or is a religion, but to me Religion as a whole means nothing, WoW might as well be one just like Christianity or what not, it doesn't really matter because religion is just an idea.. it's not something real that you can feel and touch, much like the reason God matters just as little to me. Religion is holy zomg how could I compare that to a MMO, here's a newsflash: Not everyone sees Religion as something that matters.
And I'm not devoted to gaming at all, neither do I usually comment on anything here. No need to defend myself, just thought you should know. Also reality is what you make it, as is the perception of reality, not everyone live limited by "You cant do that/You must do that", meaning it's my life and my choice if to regard Religion as anything else then crap.
Oh and you actually thought my first post was "so in depth"? I just got the urge to reply to this, took me like 1 min to jot that down. And it wasn't in defense of the student at all, more like a shot at religion. WoW being a religion is stupid to you, while to me the concept of religion is just as stupid. That's my opinion though, while I may hold no regard to it I still respect peoples choice to believe in it.

"...reality is what you make it, as is the perception of reality..."
There are few parts of reality that are so relative as you wish them to be. Dead is still dead. Your relativism does not change that, no matter your perception. This is not a flame, just a clarifying point.
