Two Bosses Enter: King Ymiron vs. Drakkari Colossus

Close of the heels of this past week's Keristrasza's clawing of Cyanigosa, we offer up fresh meat to the denizens of WoW Insider: King Ymiron of Utgarde Pinnacle versus Drakkari Colossus from Gundrak.
Last season, we instructed readers to ignore the adds that come along with each fight. Here, we're going to allow Drakkari Colossus his elemental, so consider both Drakkari Colossus' golem form and the elemental form. Beyond that, assume that the bosses are of approximately the same level and health and that they're fighting in neutral territory. It's fighting abilities and scale that we're debating here, so don't get caught up in actual game mechanics. Consider the flavor each villainous gladiator brings to bear, and cast your vote for who you think would come out on top.
Load up your longboats with mojo and let's see where this goes!
Week Two: King Ymiron (Utgarde Pinnacle) vs. Drakkari Colossus (Gundrak)
King Ymiron, Utgarde PinnacleKing Ymiron is the slumbering king of Northrend's Vrykul, the leader of the Dragonflayer clan who lies sleeping within Gjalerbron. Fanatically adored by his people, the now undead king has proven his worth to the Lich King.
Like the kingly Vrykul he is, King Ymiron hits like Thor's hammer. Normal hits are hard, and his Dark Slash cuts down 50 percent of the target's health. The king protects himself with Bane and complicates matters with the random cast of Fetid Rot.
Periodically during battle, King Ymiron's Screams of the Dead paralyze opponents for 8 seconds. During this time, he runs to one of the four longboats in the room to channel a spell from a Vrykul ancestor there. He will use that ability until the longboat burns shortly thereafter.
Longboat abilities include:
- Spirit Burst
- Summons an orb that causes AoE shadow damage and moves around the room.
- Spirit Strike
- Summons minions
Drakkari Colossus, GundrakDrakkari Colossus is a mechanical golem boss, surrounded by small Living Mojos.
Living Mojo
Drakkari Colossus begins battle by merging with the Living Mojos encircling him. Periodically, he becomes immune from damage, summoning a large Living Mojo. The Living Mojo wreaks havoc with Mojo Puddle and Mojo Wave, until merging with the golem form again to repeat the melee phase of the battle. These stages alternate for the length of the fight.
Read more about Drakkari Colossus' tactics.
The smackdown
Hold on! Before you vote, remember: this isn't a theorycrafting spreadsheet from Elitist Jerks. Two Bosses is more like the endless debates found on the EJ forums following a good mathematical smack-down, as posters shake down how things actually play out. Set aside differences in our opponents' health pools, level and damage output, and consider instead the spirit of each villain's abilities (including heroic abilities) and fighting style.

| ZOMG, longboats vs. mojo ... It's a draw. |
We'll be back next Thursday morning as One Boss Leaves ... And again later that afternoon, as a fresh Two Bosses Enter.

Dark Slash decides this one for me.

I just don't think a construct has that many fallback plans. King Ymiron has so many helpers to call upon. If anyone ever builds up an immunity to Purple Mojo... Colossus is DOOMED!
Zeplar Jan 30th 2009 2:28AM
Lisa, really, you have got to tell us whether these bosses are smart or AI :\
So many fights in Wrath hinge around proper movement. Is the boss infallible? Does he stand still? Or is he an average player, doing the moves but messing up once in a while?
cause otherwise Heigan is gonna be the final winner...
I also don't like abilities that deal a % of health as damage, particularly a high percent (say, above 10%). I've always felt that for the purpose of Two Bosses Enter, those abilities should be converted into a base number, say 20,000 damage for a 50%-attack (around what it would be on a well geared tank).

The king just because he's a single target for the mojo splashes, those things get really fuzzy with 5 people, i imagine having more places to move around as just 1 would make the power moot

(This fight;s terrain shall be Gun'drak)
King Ymiron. He would dps collusus into water elemental, and the poisons would stack, but once he hit 25%, the stun would take effect and Ymiron would move away from it, beginning in a new position. The new found abilities in the longboats would totally destroy collusus, even if it did have the intelligence to walk away. Don't get me wrong, it'd be close. Ymiron might have to fly back a few times because of elemental. The poisons would be a problem only until he activated the boats.
Ymiron wins.

Nicely wrote and i agree, Ymiron would win.

If this fight is in neutral territory like the post said, the king cannot call on the spirits from the longboats. Remember, those are actual graves of the ancestors, and in neutral territory he would not have access to them.
That means all the king has is dark slash and bane.
Ziilyn Jan 29th 2009 11:47PM
King Ymiron has it hands down.
Nimangma Jan 29th 2009 7:15PM
The KING vs. a statue? C'mon not even close.
Firestride Jan 29th 2009 7:37PM
Yeah, no kidding. Is the next one going to be Kel vs. the Gatekeeper from Azjol-Nerub?
Gilgamesh Jan 29th 2009 7:18PM
Assuming Yimiron stands still during the Mojo Phase, Drakkari Colossus wins
Resonant Jan 29th 2009 7:28PM
Duh, the elemental would put poison at each of the boats, pwned King Ymiron
VSUReaper Jan 29th 2009 7:28PM
I can see it now.... Yimiron vs Keristraza
komamura Jan 29th 2009 10:12PM
at least try to make them kinda even =(
oscurotoro Jan 29th 2009 7:30PM
That's a stupid match up. You can't pit a boss with no healing abilities against a boss with a move that automatically takes half of the targets health. Ymirron will destroy.
Maralach Jan 29th 2009 7:31PM
Actually, I think the colossus will win. One the one side we have a powerful Vrykul king who can deal devastating blows to about any humanoid, on the other side we have a living piece of rock. Drak slash will cut a humanoids hp in half, but will probably just scratch of the rockskin. Ymiron will summon aid of up to four ancestors? The colossus just summons an element consisting of the mojo of a thousand. No, the colossus will be the winner
Meira Jan 29th 2009 7:40PM
"Dark slash will cut a humanoids hp in half, but will probably just scratch of the rockskin."
Read the tooltip again. Ymiron doesn't scrach with his weapon nor his nails, is with darkness! Darkness, being a magical element, ignores the thickness of the victim and messes up the Colussus' mojo!
"Ymiron will summon aid of up to four ancestors? The colossus just summons an element consisting of the mojo of a thousand."
Never heard "a few but good"? Four excellent ancestors can beat the refinement of thousands of lousy soul sacrifices.
As long Ymiron uses Screams of the Dead at the right time, he can easily avoid the enormous damage of the poison pools.
elstor Jan 29th 2009 7:37PM
Bane might get a crushing blow on Colossus, but ultimately Ymiron would wipe on Mojo Puddle and Mojo Wave. Ymiron just doesn't have the DPS to handle the Drakkari Colossus. Plus, Colossus spits out the elemental, which would confuse Ymiron's guild on vent and cause a wipe.
elstor Jan 29th 2009 7:39PM
sigh.... clearly don't put the guild name in brackets, but it was supposed to read "which would confuse Ymiron's guild, ZOMG Vrykul, on vent and cause a wipe."
The Chilli God Jan 29th 2009 7:42PM
Short term, Ymiron wins because of Dark Slash and his moving out of the mojo puddles to call his longboats.
However, Ymiron would come out of that fight really smelly and drenched in mojo, forcing him to have a bath. Since vrykul having baths is epic fail, The Colossus ends up with the last laugh.
Both of them lose in the long term, so I say it's a draw.
