[1.Local]: Of Baby Spice and free stuff from guys
Reader comments – ahh, yes, the juicy goodness following a meaty post. [1.Local] ducks past the swinging doors to see what readers have been chatting about in the back room over the past week.
Finally, we end this week's edition with a link from a reader. "Thought you might find this interesting," wrote old WI friend Badger on his tip: a neat little post on how to be a better commenter. (What more appropriate for [1.Local]?). Indeed, we do find it interesting, Badge ... Indeed we do.
Until next week!
(Baby) Spice, spice, baby Readers seem to have cooked up a satisfying solution to the problem of thoughtless creeps who park their mounts atop summoning stones, flight masters and other necessities, blocking them from use. "LOL, whenever I see a giant Tauren on his Humongous Impressive War Mammoth parked on the Dalaran flight master, it's Baby Spice to the rescue," giggles Euphronius. "Nothing more hilarious than seeing him reduced to the size of a Great Dane." Woof.
Over the moon So how many Elders have you visited so far this year? The Lunar Festival is one of those events that offers something for players of all stripes. Normyk certainly found his own niche: "I'm a very casual player (went to Northrend for a couple of skillups, and that's it so far) and I still find a lot for me in this one. The rep is a really nice thing, since one of the stupid things I want to do is get my Ambassador achievement (Exalted with darn and getting close on the others) and there is the added benefit of getting about to all corners of the world (that I can get to). It might even get me to set foot in a dungeon for a change. It's fun stuff and shouldn't be considered to be bad for casuals just because it isn't really possible for some of them to get all of the achievements involved. As it does with so many things, a lot of it comes down to play style and what a person likes to do." Join WoW Insider's "excrutiatingly casual" Horde guild, It Came from the Blog, on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 6 p.m. Eastern (3 p.m. Pacific, 4 p.m. server time) on Zangarmarsh server, for a Lunar Festival party including a group trip to Moonglade and a visit with a few Elders.

Got wood? A story about Simple Wood with 111 comments? Wait ... what? It seems that the good folks in [1.Local] just can't hide their love for the wood. "This could turn fires into a good way to mark positioning on bosses," muses Kuroyume. "For example, imagine marking the spots where you have to go when learning Heigan by putting a fire... It's a true raiding revolution! Now we're gonna have to run TO the fire instead of away from it!" We suppose anything's possible.

Lost in the crowd control Bringing back more crowd control in instances evoked strong feelings in readers this week. While many players appreciate quicker, cc-less instance runs, others miss the need for care and the risk of a bad pull. "In BC, I led a lot of five-man PuGs and enjoyed the challenge of marking up groups and successfully executing clean pulls," writes Willow. "I also enjoyed the chaos of a pull gone wrong that needed to be saved with timely CC. Shadow Labs in particular had some interesting pulls. "In Wrath, I don't ever lead. I pass leader to the tank, he marks one mob and I spam my AoE. While it is 'fast,' it isn't nearly skillful. Chaos almost never breaks out. Just doesn't really make you glad you rolled a particular class. While I appreciate the time savings, I do think something has been lost." Do you miss your lucky charms?

Is it true chicks get free stuff? Deep inside the comments of this post about speaking up (or not) in a group, we finally discovered a player who admits getting free stuff just for being a girl. "I am paid gold to talk on Vent," states LytLady. "That is right. I am paid gold. Unfortunately, it is not for my wisdom, nor for my game play. It is because of my voice. I have 'one of those voices.' "I play Horde, but our sister Alliance guild shares the same Vent. Recently, we have had a few more Alliance players concentrating on their Horde 'toons, and my abandoned Ally 'toon receiving gifts in her mail. I find it humorous. "I rarely speak anymore, especially during an instance or raid, just cause it causes trouble. Though I love listening in on raid/instance channels ( for info on the event), I rarely do it anymore unless it is ok with the rest of the group. I have been the cause of two recent wipes because the guys were too distracted, LOL. Thank goodness they were Alliance guild wipes. Both GMs find it quite hilarious, so I am safe for now." But are we safe from her?
Until next week!

After being in my guild over a year, they guys don't go so wild any more unless its someone new who hasn't heard me. Our guild has 7 or 8 women in the guild now and its amusing how quiet it can get at times if all of us are in vent having a converstation. We have the guys' complete attention.

The baby spice one is stupid.
During the lunar festival we were all standing at the quest giver after killing omen and some noob (I rarely use the word but he truley was one.) Kept telling the 30+ people to move (about 20 of which were probably alliance whilst we were horde) I explained all you needed to do was shift+v but he refused and eventually started throwing baby spice out much to the annoyance of several players...
tl;dr shift+v is all you need when a draenei is sitting his ellek on a quest giver or w/e (tauren are too nice to do that on purpose :))
jbodar Jan 30th 2009 8:42PM
You were too lazy to move, but you could type in chat, and you're pissed because he used Baby Spice on you? Oh you poor, oppressed Tauren. What happened to common courtesy?
Zarfay Jan 31st 2009 1:42AM
I agree, what happened to common courtesy; the guy was screaming abuse at us :-)
Balius Jan 31st 2009 3:27AM
The horror, you were shrunk for 30 seconds! Lynch that SOB!

"The horror, you were shrunk for 30 seconds! Lynch that SOB!"
I was not one of the people annoyed, I couldn't care less... I kinda wish it was a longer buff :P

Man, am I glad for the gender diversity in my guild

Man, am I glad for the gender diversity in my life.
Thaliana Jan 30th 2009 7:40PM
@Isrephael
I hope that's what most men were thinking.
Seriously.
jbodar Jan 30th 2009 8:44PM
Seriously. If the mere sound of a female voice causes your brain to overload, it's time to re-think your social life.
LytLady Jan 30th 2009 10:48PM
Of course you are safe! (but only if you want to be..lol)
While I admit getting free stuff, I did not admit to keeping it. The only things I do keep are the female stuff like flowers & pets. The gold & anything else, I send back. If I am sent a gem/ore to my Horde JC that I need to level, I always send back to the donor the item's gold worth based on WOWHead...
I probably could exploit those guys, as well as a few others, but why? That could only cause issues. I love being in both these guilds and am a very active member in the Horde guild (I manage the website, assit in leveling others, etc..). I would rather be able to exchange info and tips, be welcomed into instances/raids, etc... then to have a bank of goodies & gold and no one to play/quest/group/raid with. I have actually watch two other female players get banned from several guild because of this behavior. It is a shame for one because she is actually a pretty good player.. but who wants the drama.
I admit to having some fun being a female, but I would never do it to harm another or to the exploit ends you may think. I also am very aware of my audience and try to respect all sides. Most say I am too nice, but I am OK with that.
Hey! I don't strip my BE & dance on mailboxes!! Though I know a few male players have found this lucrative when using their female toons... lol.
LytLady Jan 30th 2009 10:48PM
@jbodar - You would think... Huh!!
This isn't the 1st nor 2nd guild I have been in... And it was a small issue in the others too... I am sure , as with the others, in a couple months they will get use to it & settle down, & I can talk regularly... but in the meantime I have to pick & choose carefully when I talk.
But also, this does not just happen in WOW. This is a factor in my rl. I have been in two different industries (not the ones your thinking) that my voice was noticed. So I don't know if it because that I am female or if it just my voice.
FYI - just for fun, I sent 10g to the toon who's male voice melted me on vent last night...it was worth it.. lol
Cadychan Jan 31st 2009 12:07AM
Well, as long as you're 'honorable' about it, which it sounds like...well, no harm in a bit of fun, eh? I sound like a dude when I use my headphones (wah..sniff), but no harm no foul. Keep up the good raid work. =)

I'm going to start billing for all my vent conversations

Baby spice does nothing if the dbag is sitting clicking off the 'debuff'. This is something that Blizzard needs to address -- as in, you know, actually do something about.
In a previous post here, I brought this up & called out the guild Failure on Whisper wind, since they seem to actively encourage dbag behavior. A member of Failure followed up on my comment, saying, essentially, that their anti-social activity served them well in gaining new recruits. I probably believe that -- and I also think that it's time for Blizz to put guilds on notice; if they actively encourage a-holeness, they should be mass perma-banned. Guilt by association? Hell yes. Why not? Isn't a guild a community of players wrapped around common goals? If that goal is to be the most annoying people on a server, then they should be gone. Any "innocents" that get caught up in that (admittedly draconian) dragnet, well, don't associate w/jerks.

Little boys with dirty little minds get distracted by a female voice. Just rolling a female toon you get tons of unwanted attention from these little perv's. I have had to tell a few of these perps to back off my toon is female I am not. I can't imagine what it is like for a female player to have to deal with all these little depraved ass-wipes.
Balius Jan 31st 2009 3:46AM
I've been lucky enough not to have run in with perverted people much. Vent and guild chat are usually pretty mature about genders, with some healthy joking on both sides.
I did have one level 10 orc ask me on my blood elf female if I wanted to date him, so I invited him to voice chat where he learned quickly that female character doesn't equal female player...
Ace Jan 31st 2009 10:13AM
Well, in order to not get hit on by every little boy out there, I simply rolled tauren. I had one tankadin ask me once why I chose tauren, and he just didn't understand why I wouldn't want to be a belf like he was so I could look good too. >.>
kalatash Jan 31st 2009 10:19PM
...baby, assuming your Tauren was female, I would hit on it all night long.
Ace Feb 1st 2009 10:38AM
Nice try, but she only likes trolls....oh, wait, I guess you do qualify...xD
