Blood Pact: Raiding as Affliction

Let's for a moment forget that Survival Hunters are in the equation. We do this for our sanity. For now, let's focus on getting our own performance up to par. The spec I use for raids is a 53/ 0/ 18 as opposed to the more popular 56/ 0/ 15, but I've found it gives tremendous returns with just a few talent points allocated in some talents. It's been difficult, but it's slowly becoming rewarding. I say slowly because it must be noted that some classes scale better and faster with gear and the raid. Let's take a quick look at the build right after the jump.
Everything about this build is pretty standard, although a few things might stand out as being peculiar. The first notable thing is that we invest only one point in Eradication. This is because two more points for a mere percentage increase (you get the same amount of haste when it procs) devalues the talent points, so they give more bang for the buck elsewhere. In this case, one point in Molten Core, using the same principle. Even at 5%, the buff will almost always be up considering the number of DoTs we'll have on a target. Other than that, it's a couple of points thrown into Cataclysm to help push Immolate's hit up to par with other Affliction spells, which benefit from Suppression.
The rotation
This is the one thing that has made a lot of Warlocks shy away from Affliction as the cycle for 0/ 41/ 30 has fewer spells to cast and doesn't require as much maintenance. That build also gives good returns as it's not as gear-dependent. In Affliction, the only important sequence is the initial volley of spells, and should be on a priority basis thereafter. It should be Shadow Bolt followed by Haunt to apply two stacks of Shadow Embrace, followed by Unstable Affliction and Immolate. Both spells have a 15 second duration, so should always be cast in tandem to help ease the rotation a little bit.
The rest are the instant cast spells, Corruption, Curse of Agony, and Siphon Life. Alternately, you can cast Curse of the Elements as you have Malediction, and should ease your rotation considerably. After this initial cast, it's a matter of DoT uptime which can be... hellish. Shadow Bolts are there for when everything else is on cooldown.
The pet
Sadly, no demon will give significant DPS returns on this fight except for the newly improved Doomguard and, if you can time it right, an Infernal. Felhunters, despite their Shadow Bite ability which is supposed to scale with DoTs, barely does more damage than a run-of-the-mill, untalented Imp. In many cases, having an Imp out is even better because it stays at long range and can have Phase Shift toggled for survivability. Even with the newly buffed demon health, Felhunters tend to die a lot. At any rate, these pets will deal anywhere from 150-200 DPS on average, perhaps more if they scaled better with the raid (which they don't).
On special fights, pure DPS races, such as Patchwerk, use a Doomguard. The new situational demons have been greatly improved and it seriously makes me wish I could keep the big guy around indefinitely. Doomguards deal significantly higher DPS than any pet available to Affliction and should be used whenever you can manage it. The only caveat is that, obviously, it is impossible to do this through Curse of Doom as no trash mob lasts for a minute and even then you'll need to land the killing blow. Good luck with that in a raid. Your only real choice is to use the Ritual of Doom, which sadly has a 1-hour cooldown and will set you back 1 Gold for a Demonic Figurine.
DoT uptime
Keeping all DoTs up is simply the most difficult part of playing an Affliction Warlock and is arguably the hardest playstyle in the game. Harder even than the flavor-of-the-month Trap Dance of Survival Hunters. The difficulty isn't just in keeping DoTs up, it's in not clipping them. It's easy enough to keep mashing the buttons so all DoTs are always on the target, but this will often result in clipping, or overwriting the DoT. Whatever happens, do not ever, ever clip your DoT. While it might not seem like much, this is actually a significant drop in DPS.
The best way is to start casting spells when the DoT is about to expire so that it lands exactly as the previous spell has expired. Naturally, this isn't easy at all. You can watch your timers manually using the default UI, although I prefer to use Ashelya's DoTimer with some OmniCC thrown in for good measure because I'm just not that hardcore. It's important to note that Haunt is not a DoT which means you can reapply it even though the Haunt debuff still has some time on the target. This means you should cast Haunt every time it's up, taking priority over other debuffs, even if they expire at the same time. Haunt also has a slow travel time, so this should factor into your calculations when refreshing Corruption.
Other notes
Ironically, the best glyph for Affliction is for a Destruction spell, the Glyph of Immolate, followed by Glyph of Siphon Life. The last glyph slot is up for debate, although it's notable that the Glyph of Curse of Agony helps simplify our rotations. It's not a straight up DPS increase, so I actually prefer Glyph of Corruption, which stacks with Nightfall.
Gear will factor highly into our DPS, mostly because our abilities can only scale so much on their own. This makes the set bonuses of Tier 7/7.5 important, even if sometimes an individual piece gives better statistics than a set piece. I like the spirit bonus because it balances out Life Tap, which is often a dip in our DPS. In fact, the bonus rewards mobility fights which is when we can Life Tap with little penalty.
Procs from items such as Dying Curse (Heroic Naxxramas) and Illustration of the Dragon Soul (Heroic Obsidian Sanctum) are tremendous boosts to DPS, which make them highly desirable items sometimes even over Tier 7. The point is that it's not going to be a cakewalk. It takes tremendous attention to detail as well as a serious commitment to gear upgrades in order to deliver. It can be frustrating, certainly, but once you reach a certain gear threshold and get those rotations down pat, you'll find that your raid DPS will boost up considerably. Maybe even catch up to that new Survival Hunter with a blue gun.

well turns out it can be good or bad depending on your gear...
taken from elitest jerks
"4pT7 procs Spirit of the Damned after each Life Tap (not stacking, of course). According to the dps model, 300 Spirit increase your dps by 130. The more difficult question is how much uptime the buff will have. There are, of course, fights where you don't Life Tap, where you Life Tap only in non-dps situations and so on - but ignoring these, in our model you use 5.7 Life Taps per minute to restore your mana. If you place the Life Taps ideally distributed, that means the buff is up 57 out of 60 seconds, which is basically all the time. Thus, the damage increase would be ~120 dps.
With high end T7 equip, you would only need about 4 Life Taps per minute, meaning the buff is up for about 2/3 of the time, equaling roughly 100 dps.
This amount is reduced by anything that improves your mana-regeneration, for example Replenishing buffs from Shadow Priests.
So when it comes to equip comparison, keep in mind that Tier7-pieces have a built-in 20-30 dps each if you use your Life Taps correctly. But also keep in mind that better equip means fewer Life Taps, meaning the value of 4pT7 is high when you start in naxx, but will be significantly lower when you leave naxx."

Aff Lock Here: 5800 WWS DPS on PW 2 days ago.
The problem with AFF is that a large chunk of your DPS happens during execute phase and if you don't nail that last 25%, your DPS takes a huge hit.
15% of my "overall" damage to PW was done via Drain Soul in last 25%. Or, 60% of my damage during the execute phase was due to Drain Soul.
The trick is to be able DS for 1 tick exactly, just like it was a shadow bolt filler. You will generally get 2 or 3 ticks before having to re-apply dots.
Anyways, the DS mechanic is really lame imo. If anything is going on negatively during that last 25% we take a HUGE penalty.

Why not just leave out immolate from the rotation? The talents in the affliction tree improve specific shadow-based DoTs, as well as improving general shadow damage done. There isn't a talent that improves general DoT damage done or fire damage.
I'd just cast a shadowbolt instead of casting immolation, with a rotation of:
Shadow bolt > Haunt > Unstable Affliction > Siphon Life > Curse of Agony > Corruption
Vaeevictiss Jan 30th 2009 12:20PM
Because immolate has a higher DPCT than shadow bolt now. You would actually yeild more damage by casting the immolate than you would a Shadowbolt.
But, under 25% you should drop Immolate when DS becomes your filler.
Vaeevictiss Jan 30th 2009 12:23PM
ps: the Immo glyph increases the DoT portion of Immolate, and there actually is a talent that improves the dot damage of immolate...Haunt ;)
Many people forget that just because Immo is in the Destro tree and has a direct damage portion, that the rest is still considered a DoT and is effected by anything that increases DoT damage, all the way down to the 1% from your spellstone weapon buff.

I would suggest the addon TimerButtons for locks. It shows the icon w/o a bar counting down even if the spell isn't up, letting you know that the spell is down.
That's the one thing I don't like about the other addons... the dots disappear when they're expired and you have to figure out which one's missing. TimerButtons makes this easier, although it's not very customizable.

Good article Zach! I don't raid much..actually I've been to Naxx only once since I just do BGs and arena when I have a partner that wants a lock.../sigh...but it's definitely a nice article since I eventually HAVE TO raid to get better weapons and some cool trinkets I can use for pvp as well..I was always confused regarding afflic rotation,,,awesome..thx

I find that Immolate and SL tend to drop my dps. With my 56/0/15 spec about35% of my total dps comes from SBs. Right now my rotation is SB->Haunt->Corr->UA->C0A. I only put up a SL if the fight is a little healing intensive. Right now I'm in a mix of Naxx and blues and I can push 2200 dps easy before buffs. If we don't have a Balance druid in the raid I'll put up CoElements. Right now I'm out dpsing other affliction locks in our raids that are trying to keep everything up at once, and by a long shot to. IMO it's just far more efficient to get a 5k SB of instead of 2 dots that tick for around 800.

The following Public Service Announcement brought to you by the Foundation for the Prevention of Warlock Suckage.
Up-and-coming affliction locks: please DISREGARD any posts here by any lock suggesting you drop immolate and/or siphon life from your rotation (the only time you drop immolate is below 35%). If your DPS drops because you have added them, then you need practice, because some pretty skilled warlocks have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt (see elitistjerks.com) that keeping all your dots up is superior to dropping any of them.
Practice your "rotation" until you can keep them up along with all your other dots, and you will see a substantial DPS increase. If you can't handle juggle all the dots available to you, 0/41/30 is ----->that way.
Damorons Jan 30th 2009 2:17PM
Funny Elitist Jerks is where I got my rotation.
FenSat Jan 30th 2009 2:28PM
elitistjerks.com/f80/t37900-dots_you_affliction_warlock_thread/
Pretty clear on keeping all dots up, with plenty of mind-numbing math to back it up.
And, having not read that thread in a while, I found myself falling prey to misinformation. Keep immolate up below 35% as well. Basically, don't drop dots.
Billhelm Jan 30th 2009 2:49PM
aff locks have to always remember that affliction is more about maximizing damage per cast time (DPCT) and your DPCT is going to be higher than any of your dots than a shadowbolt.
Dropping any of them is going to lead to subpar DPS.
If you don't like the complexity go to some hybrid spec that is 3 dots and incinerate spam. I did it for a while, but that becomes a snoozer after a bit.
The funny thing is, Affliction is essentially managing three groups of events - haunt uptime, casting UA/Immo and casting SL/CoA. Corruption always stays up if Haunt is managed properly.
After a bit of practice, I don't find it to be terribly difficult.

This column makes me want to go and level my 40 lock. Excellent writing, really makes a warlock come alive. At 40 my lock feels broken since 3.0, no more stam buffs in Demonology means why even choose the tree. Affliction doesn't seem like a great levelling spec, but it could work. Thanks for the great column. keep up the good work.
U can rite gild applekashn fur me?

Gimick fights are gimick. They don't make warlocks tanks, any more than gruul is evidence that mages are a tank class. When warlocks can do all (or almost all) of content as the tank role, displacing a prot paladin, feral druid, tank specced dk, or prot warrior, than maybe. Until then, using gimick fights as supposed evidence is a little silly.

Curse of Elements dead? huh?
it gives you a 10% increased spell damage...that means you do 10% MORE damage....period.
how is that weak in any way?
I almost never used agony (im demon/destro mind you), and always apply CoE on bosses....never on trash, i just apply a quick instant corruption, then AoE them down with molten core proc'ing, which in 25 mans, nets me 5000-5500k (sometimes even 6k) AoE crits...that's just plain 'ol nice.

I'm rolling an affliction lock and am consistently raiding 25 man Nax and have racked up quite a good amount of gear including Fearlina's Madness, the Haunting Call, and Illistration of the Dragon Soul are just a few of the pieces I have. My Spell Damage is 1741 without Fel Armor and over 2000 with it. With full raid buffs and trinkets i have over 3000 spell damage. However, I consistently have problems maintaining DPS. Usually over the course of the run my DPS is only about 1900-2000, 2400 on a VERY GOOD night. My rotation is Haunt, Unstable Affliction, Siphon Life, Cusre of Agony, Corruption, Immolate and then Shadow Bolt. Can anyone offer me any ideas as to how to improve my DPS so that I can become more competative in raids?
jyl Mar 31st 2009 6:03AM
My main is a warlock: I have play affliction, DEMO and Hybrid Destro.
For me, the Hybrid destro is the one that provide the highest DPS, by a wide marging actually ( 3.1 K DPS on patchwerk in Hybrid Destro against 2.2 K DPS in Affliction). Same gear.
My gear are 4 x T7.5 + Turning Tide + others, mostly 25 Man raid epic -- all fully enchanted. (2300 Spell Power With felArmor, without talent (go higher in Hybrid Destro)).
Now, I don't have proof of that, but I believe that Warlock DPS these days scale more with the "Internet Latency" then the gear itself. Let me explain what I think, but could be wrong: When I play at home, my average Latency is about 270 ms.
I think that this 270 ms is basically added to my GCD -- so, when it come time to refresh my DoT, I seems to be loosing a lot of time to that latency. In the old days of SB spamming, everything was queue and the latency was not so much of a factor. In Hybrid Destro, we spam more "incinerate" that are queue and my DPS seems to be more consistent -- but again, never reach the one of others similarly equipt warlock.
So, at this time, I believe that affliction Warlock work only well with very low internet latency. Obviously, I can be 100% wrong but, I hope there is an answer there for some of us to explain our Low DPS average.
Other note: I play also a DK Frost tank and, for heroic instance, I often recruit dps (but not the healer) by using the General Channel or the trade channel (Like LF3M DPS H xx). I will get in party with anyone that "whisper me to get an invite", usually in the order I receive the whisper-- No gear check, no special request for minimum DPS, no sorting by spec. So, the DPS capability of the party might vary quite a bit : You have the new lvl 80 dress in Green/blue that will receive his achievement for "Heroic: Hall of Stone" to someone else that is fully dress in raid 25 epic with the title "Twillight Vanquisher".
I have seens 10s of Warlock and their contribution in "damage done" for a particular instance is generally low... From about 1/2 of my DK tank to somewhat higher then the DK... But on 2 occasions, I have seens warlock that has oustanding DPS... like doing 45% of the damage by themself, over 3K DPS average for a full instance and over 3.5K DPS on bosses... I was surprise that their gear was mostly from NAXX 10 and very little from NAXX 25. So far, even checking there repective talent tree (Affliction), I did not find anything that explain the discrepency. Why is it that those few ppl can play consistently with higher DPS then most others... even high end raider.
I dunno... But I don't believe that the rotation they use is the only answer...
