Breakfast Topic: What's your weapon of choice?
One of the nice things about WoW is that it allows you a variety of choices for your character. You really aren't pigeon holed into one thing or another. There are some cases in the upper echelons of the game and theory crafting where one weapon or armor choice becomes superior – but that's only if you want to take the game to such a level.
And even then, min-maxing to that extent isn't really necessary to be successful in raiding anymore.
I've come across this in my play recently. My weapon of choice (and hence the forever awesome Christopher Walken music video attached to this article).
As a Shaman I have a choice of various slow 1H weapons, giving a variety of different stats that I'd like to have. When entering the starting zones of Wrath I can pretty much find any combination that I want to fit my needs. As a protection Warrior I've found the same thing, even at times finding it more advantageous to use a DPS based weapon over a Def based weapon.
For the Shaman (which I need to point out is just my favorite alt at the moment) my weapon of choice has shifted away from slow maces to whatever sexy fist weapon I can pick up. The DPS output is roughly the same, if not better in some cases, and I just like the way it looks.
Yes, I said it. And I'll take the beating that's about to begin.
Everything else being equal, I based my alt's weapon decision on looks.
Now looks aren't the only thing – my weapons have to perform. They do. Wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am. A 2.60 speed fist weapon goes down to about a 1.50 speed when all my haste buffs are up. Nothing crits a face off like that.
So I ask myself, what's the fun in swinging around maces to do the job when I can annihilate everything with old fashioned fisticuffs?
The choice is clear, a green fist weapon is my weapon of choice.
An alternative title to this article was going to be "Do you base your alt's gear off looks?" But then I wouldn't be able to use the awesome video shown above. Wait, is that the second time I've mentioned it's awesome? Because it totally is.

To add to my previous reply, if a toiletbrush were to become available as weapon in WOW, thàt would be the thing I'd use in battlegrounds ... preferably dripping in some blue-ish or brown-ish dripping enchant :-)

Staves on casters="BOINK" and usually has more stats than mh+oh.
On melee I tend to go with axe when I can. Sure, I play orc so its bit min-max but.. I HATE how sword sounds. That "skree" sound when you hit something is so annoying to ears. I tend to like more "slice" sound of axe. So basically its just part of sounds in that.. and well, axes look more brutal. I dont know how I feel about maces. It really feels "pummeling" due sounds. And they usually dont look that good unless its paladin (imo). But then comes the one that I like most.. fist weapons. They look so freaking sweet (unless its those lowlevel ones). Outland badge fist? Sweet. Greed and pride? Sweet. Northend quest blues? Sweet

It's sad. I think the last time used one hand swords/axes on my hunter was around level 30... after that Polearms just seem to be the better choice for him, stat wise. I'd love to switch to two one hand weapons again some day.

I haven't worn a staff on my mage since pre T4. Sword or dagger + OH is dominant right now, and has been for quite a while for caster DPS.
Right now I'm wearing Life and Death or Haunting Call (For extra hit) with Ward of The Violet Citadel. There is not a Staff currently in game can come close to that combination. The Turning Tide from KT has 59 more spellpower than any staff currently in the game.
In a nutshell, staves are crap right now.

The problem is a staff has the same spellpower as a mainhand weapon of the same item level. Though the stam/int/etc. of a staff vs a one-hander+offhand is about the same, you end up with 50+ more spellpower from having an offhand equipped, especially with one of the best offhands in the game available for a measly 25 heroic badges.
Blizz really needs to buff staves with this in mind. I really like the look of staves more, but their stats are awful.

I've been playing my druid alt a ton lately, so it doesn't matter what gear or weapons I have on, I still have to look at the same cat's backside I was looking at 50-odd levels ago.

I have always wondered why they don't make armor models for druid forms. I know it's some extra work but druids deserve to look cool too.
SunwellVialist Jan 30th 2009 9:54AM
Preach it.
I wish I could have a nicer look for my druid too...
That said, unless I am raiding at the time, I try very hard to choose weapons/armor with the best looks. There are several places which let you see what drops may be useful for you and with some they are on the same level, but vary greatly in look, so I just choose that which looks the nicest... at least for the time I am out of tree form... :/

Yeah, I hear that. Cat butt with big horns. And WAY too much hair. lol.
Best weapon I ever picked up? A fish. A catfish or something. I actually gave it to some lowbie rogue because everything I use is two-handed. I still wanted it though.
And, uh, as for the question? Staves. Although I love mixing it up with a sexy two-handed mace every now and then. They look so good on tauren. =D

Of course! Especially all other things being equal. Keeping my meta gem active helps me stay in my S2 shoulders as a warlock- it's just more fun leveling when there are impaled skulls next to my character's head!
That said, I will sacrifice looks for performance- even a relatively small one, but if I really like the look, I'll keep the old gear until I have a sufficiently awesome replacement, and wear it when I don't need to perform well to avoid embarrassment. :D
elstor Jan 30th 2009 8:25AM
I use what fits the bill.... currently that's two very sexy swords with all the hit I could want.
mulvita Jan 30th 2009 10:44AM
For both my casters, I'm a MH/OH kind of guy. I love one handed swords on my gnome mage (battle mage!) and on my shammy I dont feel right w/out a shield on him at least and i've gotten used to one handed maces. I dont mind staves, but I defintely prefer the MH/OH combo unless something is better out there

I've the sneaky suspicion this topic only exists purely to see Christopher Walken dancing at his best.
Even if this does turn out to be the case, the article still gets 5* from me!
Walken '08!

Took WAY too many comments before someone said it.
Walken is the man.
