Totem Talk: Back to Enhancement

Before last week, I had assumed that folks were tired of hearing me talk about enhancement as a spec. I've been focusing more on elemental because in the past I've seen a lot of comments complaining that elemental was getting short shrift from me, and also because I found the way it had been released with Wrath to be worth discussing. Frankly, elemental now is a lot more fun and pushes more DPS than it had pre-3.0.8 and I was enjoying playing with the spec.
Well, in the comments to last weeks post you informed me that, in fact, I haven't been talking about enhancement enough. At this point I put my head down and I began silently to weep. Then great, wracking sobs, followed by a scream to the heavens. Enhancement, enhancement, why have you forsaken me!?
I didn't, dumbass, I'm still right over here, you even have all the gear in your bags, just respec and we can go stormstrike things to death.
So yeah, I've respecced enhancement on my draenei. Never fear, orc boosters, I've started leveling my orc again and I'm aiming him at resto/elemental when dual specs come out. Since that bloody fist weapon in CoT won't drop for me, I had my warrior make up a Titansteel Bonecrusher for the MH and we're off to the races. Well, okay, these particular races involve hitting things in the back and setting them on fire a lot.

First up, as is often the case, please go to the Enhancement Shaman postings on Elitist Jerks if you want a lot of detail and math on your DPS as an enhancement shaman. It's an incredibly valuable resource for you. Yes, it is also an enormously long resource so as always I'll take the time to summarize and explain as best I can what it says.
One of the things to keep in mind as an enhancement shaman in the new WoTLK order of things is this: you are the most hybrid spec of possibly the most hybrid class in the game. I've said it before and I will almost certainly say it again, you are a caster/melee DPS class now if you play enhancement. You want gear with int on it, especially once you start running heroics and moving into 10/25 man raid content, thanks to Maelstrom Weapon and the ability to throw an instant cast Lightning Bolt or Chain Lightning without clipping your melee swings. Maelstrom is also insanely sweet for leveling and questing... the ability to throw an instant cast Healing Wave on yourself when you're taking damage is not to be underestimated, but you won't be using it for that in a raid or instance. You'll be using it to push damage. With Maelstrom, you can throw an "Oshi.." heal on the group with Chain Heal, use Chain Lightning for limited AoE damage, or LB for single target DPS, it's an amazing ability that really adds power and flexibility to the class. I myself am not good enough to use a 4 stack MW to cast a quick spell without clipping my swings and lowering my DPS, but some shamans are capable of doing so, especially if they have two slow weapons. If you can do it, more power to you, but I recommend waiting until you have a full five stack on MW until you're really comfortable with how it works.
Feral Spirit's pretty hot when it's up. You should be using it every cooldown. I don't really know what else to say here, it clears roots and snares, it heals you while it's up, it does pretty solid damage while the invisible wolves are biting the things you don't like. It's a good talent. Yay for Feral Spirit. Seriously, what's not to like here? Get it, love it, use it. Excellent for soloing, good in a dungeon, I for one embrace our ghostly wolf underlings. I've solo'd group quests with the proper use of this talent.
In addition to Maelstrom making us much more castery than ever, we now have the new mechanics of Lava Lash to consider. I have Glyph of Lava Lash and am 5/5 Elemental Fury, which is the recommended way to go if you intend to use flametongue on your offhand (as I do, even though it's not a particularly fast offhand) - I use a slower offhand in part because slower weapons work better with Lava Lash and in part because it's the best weapon I'll have access to until I get lucky in Naxx or buy the badge fist offhand. Lava Lash does its damage as fire, so it ignores armor, and gets more damage from the FT/Glyph setup. You can still go WF/WF and do respectable damage, and I know some shamans actually don't take Lava Lash to simplify their rotations, but I'm a huge booster of the talent and can't imagine going without it.
We should also talk about Static Shock. At present, the groups and raids I've been on as a shaman haven't had enough mana return for me to forgo Water Shield, but as soon as we get a Spriest or properly specced hunter/paladin for the 10 mans, Static Shock will be a very hard DPS talent to ignore. EJ says that it's the best use of 3 talent points in the tree
One of the things I love about the 'new' enhancement tree is that it isn't just Stormstrike - Earth Shock - Stormstrike over and over again. Since Maelstrom Weapon is somewhat unpredictable (you know it will stack to five, but you don't know exactly when that will happen) you want that to be your first priority when it is at a full five stack, then Stormstrike, Earth Shock and Lava Lash in that order.
Some shamans swear by opening with a Flame Shock and then casting Lava Burst to ensure a spell crit to proc Elemental Devastation, but I've tested this out and the loss of time clipping your swings seems to hurt your DPS. If you're going to do this, do it once at the beginning of a boss fight, don't keep doint it. You're going to get enough spell crits from your normal rotation that you don't need to try and force them and the constant casting will really bone your DPS.
Talents for enhancement really benefit from synergy with elemental, especially now that we do so much more casting than before Wrath. My current build isn't entirely satisfying... I'd prefer more points in static shock but like I said I don't get to use it as much as I'd like and I might drop points in Unleashed Rage if anyone I knew had Abomination's Might. But I love having Elemental Devastation and Elemental Fury, and I've toyed with playing around with the spec to get 1 point in Elemental Focus since then I might be more able to go into full Static Shock. I haven't tested that yet, though, and it might not work. The spec I'm considering using now is this one, depending on if I can justify losing the bonus to my windfury totems (depends on raid makeup). If not, I can always drop the points in Reverberation and make it up there.
Next week we'll talk more about specific gearing for enhancement. And I promise, a big post about resto is coming, I just want to get more healing under my belt before I do it.

I love elemental so much I refuse to respec into enh.
So instead I'm leveling another shaman. I can't wait to get some sexy fists to bash things in the face with.
Matrim Jan 30th 2009 5:19PM
On another side note, I'm very happy that Blizz is giving love to the "Fist" class of weapons. Nothing says loving like some fisting

Could just wait for duel specs?

Sweet.

I too want that Bonecrusher! The mat costs are killing me, but soon... soooooooon.

The biggest problem I have with my enhancement shaman at the moment is the dependence on +hit on our gear, limiting us to 'downgrading' to Lvl 78 blues in order to even be an asset in an instance.
I'm sure once Naxx geared I will find itemization easier, but at the moment it is frustrating being the bottom of the DPS chart, watching the DK's in AH greens bringing in crazy numbers.

That's my spec at the moment (I run with a DK that has Imp. Icy Talons). A glyph and the 2 piece t7 bonus can remove the need for 3 points in imp shields. I've played around a lot with specs and this one seems to be solid for group buffs and my dps.
Water shield isn't necessary while raiding, though it was in 5 mans and 10 mans (depending on raid comp) until I got some better gear.
Works pretty well, and I just got http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40383 so I'm itching to see my windfury totals :-D

First off Thanks Matt for saying that you weren't giving Elementals much love.. I was definitely one to be VERY vocal on that fact.. its nice to have that tip of the hat when it seemed we were being snubbed and that you see us readers and how we comment.. makes me feel a lot better at least..
Second, great article! i really did love it and it was VERY informative.
third: when gearing up for raiding enhancement shaman i think will have maybe even more of an easy time of it then even resto shaman, elementals are still in the dust..
this is because A LOT of the gear that an enhancement shaman will be taking is also gear that a Hunter would be taking and I've been seeing (at least on my server) a sharp decrease in hunters lately.. this also means something very important.. HUNTER GEAR HAS HIT!!.. hit is super important for all of us and is nearly non-existent for elemental shaman on actual armor pieces pre-raid ans this is why i say elementals are left in the dust, itemization just isn't there for us pre-raid if you've never raided before.. which in all honesty is one of the more retarded things blizzard could have done seeing as to how they WANT new people to raid.. but i digress..
the only thing i cant comment on is expertise and gear.. hunters ranged damage wont be parried so i don't think there's a lot of it on mail gear.. this may mean you might need to grab some leather from the rogues/ferals out there.. their maybe cloaks and trinkets and such tho that will offset that, its one thing I'm just not sure of. but basically mostly any gear a hunter will take will have all the stats you'd need for being ok to raid with, of course, using your head to figure out what you want and need most..
would still LOVE to see that an gearing up for raiding post.. i still say elemental will be hell to write about in it unless you just throw up your hands and say "screw it I'll tell them to steal the boomkins gear".. which is always an option..
Matrim Jan 30th 2009 6:13PM
Speaking of gearing up for an elemental shaman... I spent alot of time working on pre-Naxx gear for mine. There is 1 or 2 drops in each the wide range of heroics that are actually useful. Rep gear and badge gear actually helps. However I'm still missing that ever so useful +hit that I haven't really needed in BC (they took our Resto +5% hit qq)
Its out there, but its alot harder to find than most other gear. But getting the "Hell yeah Elemental Oath and Totem of Wrath" when you go into a raid is worth it.
Marasham Jan 30th 2009 5:46PM
In the spec you're aiming for I really recommend not to take Call of Flame and Elemental Focus. Elemental Focus will simply not proc enough to make a difference in the mana pool which can not simply be fixed by popping Shamanistic Rage every CD available. Looking at the spec you're looking to try out I recommend makin it different into: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=hA0hVZhxxIoxdhIkufot
I'm just really hesistant about dropping Unleashed Rage, but if you have a DK in the group with Abominable Might that fixes the problem.

UR is trash now.
Someone has to say it.
Making a shaman pay 5 pts for what others get for much less is beyond stupid and NO shaman should spec it.
They aren't going to fix it unless the shaman all refuse to touch it.
Mental Quickness was trash originally. They boosted it up to be worth something only after noticing that no one touched it.
Assume you have a Hunter or a blood DK. If not, well, tell your guildies to complain about it in the forums. Those 5 pts are better spent even on EF.
Crit rating on gear makes EF actually useful. Even without agility you will see a good 16-20% crit chance on spells. If you assume 16%, then it means this has a 33% uptime for the spells as it takes 2 of the 6 spells between crits. That adds up fast.
And call of flame for enhancement is actually useful. No elemental shaman will be using totems for AoE damage, but the enhance shaman is already in their face, droppign magma is a no brainer. I used to firetotem twist along with WF/GoA twisting. Done right I was approaching Lock level damage on AoE packs thanks to my tabbing to different targets for flame shocks too. Nova, boom, magma, nove when cd up, boom...
Yep, your mana pool vanishes fast, but so do the bad guys.
Marasham Jan 31st 2009 4:33AM
I really like the build you've linked because I do recognise me dropping my aoe totems like you do (except for the switching, on trash, I just can't be arsed to cast Nova more than once.. go ahead, sue me :p). However, I would drop a point out of EF and two out of Imp. Ghost Wolf (I have it in my current build, but I don't use it except for pvp, and I hardly pvp anyway) if you want a pure pve build. Then put those points in Imp. Shields because if you go Static Shock, you got to max that out imho.
The build would become: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=hVhhVZhxxIoxdhIkufot
Dragon Jan 30th 2009 6:02PM
LL Glyph is really bad. Best 3 glyphs by far are Storm Strike, Windfury, and Lightning shield glyphs. Get static shock, you'll be glad you did. Most fights any boss AOE counts as damage from the boss and can trigger the shield so don't be surprised if actual "proc rate" appears to be higher than 6%
For max utility and max DPS use: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=hi0hqZhbxsoxdAIkufot
If you have somebody else in raid bringing all the good buffs and you have zero mana problems use: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=hVbAVZoxxIoxzhIkufot
The one in imp totems in the last one can be moved around a bit, or a few taken from Ancestral Knowledge and moved into imp totems if you still need that.
Lohrdook Jan 30th 2009 5:57PM
Matt,
I, like you, couldn't get the main-hand to drop so I went the same route for a crafted Main Hand (Good Choice!)...however...please dump that OH as soon as possible. It's worthless and weak, although it wasn't that expensive. It's fine in concept, but the Arpen itemization points for Enhancement is dreadful.
Run Heroic VH until The Key drops, or collect the badges required for Greed.
Anyone not using Lava Lash is an idiot. A illiterate idiot, so I'm not to worried about them reading/complaining about this. It's an INSTANT hit, which in the new world order of getting Maelstrom to 5 ticks, I'll take any instant hit you've got.
If a boss doesn't have an enrage timer, and isn't too busy shredding the DPS or tank, then throwing out a chain heal every 3rd or 4th Maelstrom proc can really help things out. Plus, melee DPS is a hazardous profession. Every now and then you will take some kind of damage, and rather than just heal yourself, why not throw some love to the tank and other DPS nearby.
From a PURE dps perspective, throw the lightning bolt. Otherwise be aware, that you can certainly help out the raid healers by using chain heal. (Or if you see them get CC'd or silenced)
COORDINATE YOUR TOTEMS: Nothing is more fail than two shamans in the same raid, dropping overlapping totems. Work out who is dropping what, AND DROP THEM!
On a related note, be mindful that Horn of Winter's buff is exactly equal to your Totem of Strength of Earth, so if you drop that totem Horn of Winter gets overwritten.
So you dropped the totem of a buff, in the raid that had that buff already? Don't BE THAT GUY! (Sole exception: mana/healing totems...they stack)
Drop your stoneskin totem instead. Or tremor if the situation calls for it.
Vanilla Wow crowded your toolbar with a certain totems that you never used, never needed to use, and unless you're gently reminded, you may have forgotten you can even do these.
However, you will get a LOT of mileage out of Fire Resist Totem, Frost Resist Totem, Disease Cleansing Totem, and the Poison Cleansing Totem.
Maximize usage of the Keg of Beer (KoB) of Talents...Bloodlust. Make sure any other Shaman in the group know who's popping first, second, etc. Also, pop BL when the wolves are out to improve their attack speed.
(The Keg of Beer refers to the fact that if you get invited to a party, and show up with a keg ofbBeer, then EVERYONE is really excited to see you.)
Go to Storm Peaks and get the Iron Flask...the one that turns you into a dwarf. It will proc nature damage to your opponent, and assuming you have your Improved Stormstrikes up, it's added DPS.
Best. Addon. Ever. ShockandAwe.
Finally, don't just use or consider Shamanistic Rage as mana regen. It's 30% less damage. Pop that, and the orc racial (or AP boosting trinket), and let the fireworks begin. Or to "tank", pop Shamanistic Rage, then the wolves, then the healing totem (herbalism talent works well too) and the HP regen should be enough to keep you going. When Maelstrom procs, use it to heal yourself. If you want to throw Bloodlust in there...some might say you're showing off...I wont, but that's what they will say...
Regardless, pop all of those you can actually temp-tank for 20-30 seconds; more if the healer shifts to you. It's an emergency procedure, for sure, but who hasn't lost a fight where all you needed was just a few more seconds...(This assumes your Earth Elemental is long dead!)
P.S. I can't wait for dual specs...Enhancement with a PvE focus and Enhancement with a PvP focus. Resto? Heck no.
Hidaya Jan 30th 2009 6:00PM
Great article, I just wanted to add that I used to use the lava lash glyph, but it seems a lot of people are saying flametounge would be slightly better, and if you do spec into static shock, glyph of lightning shield is much better than both of those. The new glyph of shocking (reduces gcd caused by shocks by 0.5sec) might be the best of all (of the choices for 3rd glyph - top 2 still seem to be SS and WF) but since not many people have tried it out yet it seems to still be in debate.
Pifoah Jan 30th 2009 6:24PM
Good article, just a few discrepancies though.
The EJ forums also points out that the lava lash glyph is not as strong as the Stormstrike glyph or the Windfury glyph. For a third glyph you could make the case for the lava lash glyph but even then I would choose the Flametongue or the Lightning Shield glyph (only if you have 3/3 Static Shock which you absolutely should have when raiding)
If you run recount and check your numbers lava lash (even with flametongue imbued) is doing less than 9% of your dps. That's why I'm not in love with the Lava Lash glyph and also there are times when running double windfury actually makes up more dps than windfury/flametongue. It's all up to your gear composition.
I always have 3/3 lightning shield up even in five mans with no replenishment buff at all. Part of that has to do with getting better gear with int on it, and the other part of that has to do with proper use of Shamanistic Rage. I've never had mana problems and I only have two points in convection. Also taking one point out of convection in your build into elemental focus will greatly help mana problems over that one point in convection.
I also take issue with not having three points in Enhancing totems. Sure, DK's provide that buff with horn of winter, but with 3/3 in enhancing totems, you get 23 additional str/agi over that buff which is a huge amount. Enhancing totems is as close to a "necessary" raiding talent as there is. No other class can provide that buff.
Dave Jan 30th 2009 6:47PM
Convection isn't really necessary in the elemental tree for two reasons, first, Shamanistic Rage is going to see to it that you really shouldn't be running out of mana in the first place and, second, you can probably get almost the same benefit out of one point in Clearcasting over the long haul. Now that your fire totems don't generate agro in anything other than the default: "Hey, look, a totem!" way for mobs, the more guaranteed uptime there means you're better off dropping those points into Call Of Flame to get into the 3rd tier and work some magma into your AoE DPS numbers.
Improved Ghost Wolf is one of those talents that really can be skipped as well unless you're really set on it for PVP. As an "Oh, SH..." feature for pulling too much in PVE, it's value is surpassed by Spirit Walk, Stoneclaw, Earthbind, or an elemental.
And, let's be honest for a sec, if you've pulled enough mobs in PVE that Feral Spirit, Flame Ele, and Heroism stacked can't save your skin, you're likely dead no matter what...
Angus Jan 30th 2009 7:17PM
IGW is useful no matter what and should be baseline.
You can use it on Sarth to move into a better position quickly, and for solo work (which most raiders do no matter what) it is a phenomenal skill. Yes, in some cases you can fight your way out. But in others you can leave before you ever have to fight, and knowing when to run is the mark of a great player.
SaintStryfe Jan 30th 2009 7:59PM
Agreed. I know I sac a little bit of DPS in raids for it, but in the end, I find it WAY to useful the 70% of the time I'm playing not in a raid or indoor dungeon.
Dave Jan 30th 2009 9:12PM
"IGW is useful no matter what and should be baseline."
No, it's useful in a specific set of situations (PVP, an outdoor instance, excess mobs somehow pulled to you in a manor you that can't stoneclaw/earth ele the agro off), that happen so infrequently in PVE that really only extensive involvement in the first is a truly valuable use of the two points.
Furthermore, in general world PVE you have Feral Spirit and it's Ghost Walk (AKA: Shammy Sprint), which, as long as you're not popping it on every cooldown for a single mob, makes instant ghost wolf redundant in the "gotta run!" category while simultaneously letting you keep dropping your stall totems without bouncing forms (also, lets not forget, healing you thus raising the possibility that you won't need to run at all...)
When you add in the relatively short cooldown, it becomes readilly apparent that IGW really shouldn't be your first choice as your general PVE "Oh Sh..!" button anymore, Feral Spirit is...
