Zarhym: Artists are "hacking away at" new dances
Okay, so we've been hearing this for a while now. The Dance Studio is coming at some point during Wrath, it's just been delayed. There's been no word about that beyond it though. We're not even sure if they have a rough target patch for it. It's just sort of out there, that unanswered question: Dude, where's my feature?
Zarhym spoke out on it again the other day, and while on one level it's more of the same "it's coming when it comes" type of talk we've heard before, he does say that the art team is "hacking away" at it when they aren't faced with more looming deadlines like Ulduar. This is probably the first time that I can recall that we have had someone from the Blizzard team saying that yes, it is being actively worked on.
Now admittedly, this still isn't a release date, and I'm still not expecting it until at least 3.3, but it's out there, which is the good thing. Here's looking forward to the day when I can have my Human Death Knight start dancing the Matt Dance.

I normally hate rattling on Blizzard for not getting around to this or that... but the lack of new dances irritates me highly, considering that it was one of the advertised features of the expansion. It's not like something they had to test extensively like DK balance. It's an isolated feature they have obviously been planning for months now, made by a specific team. If they'd at least give a note why the eff they are relaying it that much. Copyright problems? 3D Software updates? Motion Capturing Actors broke a leg?

So they're already finished with the new druid skins?

I've already accepted the fact that we're never getting new druid skins.

They half assed the barbershops by adding one or two new hairstyles a race and just stealing the rest from other races, so I don't see why anyone's excited about these dances at all. Customization seems to be the last thing on Blizzard's mind in this game. If they had their way everyone will be stomping around in tier 7, or whatever they're all on now, I really couldn't care less, looking exactly the same.
What's sad about that is that they've been pumping out great visuals on many things: the Vry'khul models and other mobs, the occasional decent looking armor set (which is good, because you'll be seeing that same set visually twelve times in Northrend), hell, even the Mechano-hog, my hatred of the stupid thing not withstanding, is designed with the same level of care and attention to details as the Flying Machine. But they forget one thing: armor can't be relied on for visual appeal: players snatch gear with even a trivial statistical boost over their current piece of gear without factoring in appearance. I loved my Icier Barbed Spear on my troll hunter, but replaced it with a butt ugly rune blade that looked like the fourth reject to Cloud Strife's Buster Sword because it had better stats for me. By that token, the one thing we'll always be looking at on our characters: the models themselves, have had so little love these past four or five years their age shows more and more with the increase with visual quality of everything else around them. Customization has habitually been Blizzard's weakest area, and Wrath of the Lich King hasn't given me any indications that this is going to change any time soon.

You know, I remeber when they first announced LK the thing people most cheered about was that you could do your own dances and haircuts - yet it seems this promised feature wont see the light of day until a year after the expansions release, most probably. That's pretty slack.

Actually after further review, the haruhi dance or the lucky star opening dance.
Yes, they may be anime, but god I hate the macarena.
SBKT Feb 1st 2009 10:29AM
That would require synchronized dancing somehow to do THOSE successfully. Haruhi? Five people. I'd opt to be Kyon. They're all dancing with eachother for the big finisher anyways. Maybe if they put some timer on how long a /dance emote ran too, it might be doable.

WTB Caramelldansen dance.

I still laugh my ass off though at them using a motion capture from chris farley no less for the ogres. Too bad the only way you can watch it is if you fight your way into dire maul ogre sector but still seeing a drunken ogre dance is worth a good laugh and a few kills.

Boomkins do the Chris Farley dance as well. It wasn't until I saw the video above the other day that the Boomkin/Ogre dance was based on that.

I nearly cried when that video was used. I remember finding it when I first started playing. Oh man.
